Test beds of innovative projects
The Canary Islands Energy (and Water) Framework
- 2.1 mill. Inhabitants; 16 mill. tourists/year - Isolated (insular) electrical systems - Lack of water resources - Insular dimension: strategic need to - reduce external dependence on fossil fuels and diversify the energy mix - maximise the use of endogenous renewable energy resources - Importance of the water-energy nexus (desalination)

- 400 MW (mainly wind and solar; in some islands already 13% RES penetration) - Records of almost 40% instantaneous RES penetration
Renewable Energies: goals - 660 MW by 31/12/2018 (20% electricity demand) - 45% by 2025 (Regional Energy Strategy)

OR ENERGY NETWORK
JOINT STRATEGIC ACTION FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION:
European OutermostRegions (ORs):
LEADERSHIP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE ENERGY MODELS
OR ENERGY NETWORK General Objectives of the Inititative
- To promote the accelerated development of RENEWABLE ENERGIES in the
OMRs by means of the active coordination among competent Public
Administration Bodies, Technology Centers and Universities of the
different Regions - Benefits for the OMRs:
- Activation of the Economy, directly in the energy sector (vulnerability reduction, costs savings,
etc.), as well as indirectly (favouring other sectors, e.g. tourism)
- Jobs creation (particularly young and qualified employment)
- Reinforcement of the technological capabilities of these regions
- To deploy the potential of ORs as natural laboratories of innovative (and
sustainable) energy technologies that can serve as models for the whole
world (impact and replicability) - Benefits for EUROPE:
- Consolidation of the world leadership of EUROPE in the Renewable Energies sector, with the
subsequent benefits at different levels (reduction of energy dependence and environmental
improvements, reinforcement of the industry and its export capability (technology transfer to other
countries, especially transboundary less developed ones), etc.)
- Contribution to the implementation of recommendations expressed in EU Protocols referring to
the vision of OMRs as natural laboratories and, in particular: COM (2008) 642 final (October 17th
2008), COM(2012) final (june 26th 2012) and Study About The Situation of OMRs In The Single
Market (P. Solbes, Oct. 2011)
