Hillary Clinton is leading the

This year's Cougar Palooza was on Tuesday, February 16th! It was a great evening that included the senior’s last home game and an awesome opportunity for our parents to meet and greet their student's teachers for next year. After meeting teachers, everyone headed toward the scrumptious-smelling food in Bishops Hall. There, we had the option of eating burgers or hot dogs with chips and a drink. Before the game began, we heard from our board president, Adrian Barfield, about Mr. Doerge’s retirement. Then we heard from our new Head of School, Mrs. Alison Beazley. By Alison G. 5th

This spring, I started playing a team

sport – basketball – for the first

time. My coach and one of my role

models, Monica Gardner, played at

SMU. I hope to play basketball in

college as well, at the University of

Connecticut, where my grandfather

went to college, and whose

women’s team is ranked #1, and is

aiming for their 4th consecutive

national championship.

I learned that my chance of playing

college basketball, as well as

athletics, accounting for just 7

percent of all varsity athletes. And

there were virtually no college

scholarships for female athletes.

The famous Civil Rights Act of 1964

helped end discrimination in various

fields based on religion, race, color,

or national origin. But, the Act did

not include any prohibition of

gender discrimination in public

education and federally assisted

programs.

As a result of Title IX, over 2.8

million girls now compete in high

school varsity sports, and women

now make up over 43 per cent of all

college athletes. Not only that,

women have competed in

traditionally male sports such as

wrestling, weightlifting, rugby, and

boxing. Playing sports has also

helped lower obesity rates in

women.

P A G E 2

Coach Gardner’s and thousands of

other girls’ would not have been

possible without an important law

that became effective on June 23,

1972. It is called Title IX (title nine).

In 2002 it was renamed the Patsy

Mink Equal Opportunity in

Education Act, in honor of the U.S.

Representative who co-authored

the bill. It states in part that,

“No person in the United States

shall, on the basis of sex, be

excluded from participation in, be

denied the benefits of, or be

subjected to discrimination under

any education program or activity

receiving federal financial

assistance.”

Before Title IX things were very

different. As late as 1971, the

primary physical activities for girls

were cheerleading and square-

dancing. Fewer than 295,000 girls

participated in high school varsity

Zika... a sickness spread by mosquitoes that

is similar to the infamous West Nile. Patients

with Zika may experience headache, fever,

red eyes, joint pain, maculopapular rash (an

extremely bad rash), and worst of all extreme

birth defects. The sickness broke out in

November and has only gotten worse. As

you can probably surmise, this isn't

something you'd want to spread at a huge

event like the Olympics. There's a small

possibility that because of the spread of this

dangerous virus, this year's Olympics could

be postponed or even canceled. Athletes

participating in this year's Olympics are

reluctant to admit that this may interfere

with their once in a lifetime experience.

Until this summer, we can only hope for the

best and pray this virus will not spread and

become an epidemic that could affect many

young dreams.

As you may

or may not

know, this

year's

Olympics will be held this summer in

Rio and is expected to be one of the

greatest events to date. However, there

seems to be something in the way.

Terror in India

What a terrifying time

People were terrorized,

but not like the terror we

On February 10th a wild

Indian town of Siliguri. The large

elephant came from the Baikunthapur

forest and thundered through a

neighborhood. It knocked down walls

that were part of small shacks and

crushed vehicles as it walked down the

streets. Many people crowded together

According

to online reviews, “EA Tiburon has

created the most visually arresting

football video game to date that goes

across nearly the entire visual spectrum,

from the play animations to the uniform

detail. The studio also managed to narrow

the animation gap between the smooth on

field action and the less fluid scenes on

the sidelines after the whistle. The

perfected game play and an abundance of

addicting modes make NBA 2K16 a

heavyweight contender for the greatest

sports game ever made.”

Technology: Anything That Makes

Life Easier

by Jordan L. 5th

In the world today,

people invent

things that are

simple, but

innovative. For

instance, one

woman took it

upon herself to make her baby stroller

more fun to use. There's a platform on

the back with handles, so it can

become a scooter! It's all safe, don't

worry! If you're an artist, there's a pen

with a sensor at the top, so you can

scan any item and then draw in that

color! Some people like the kitchen

gadgets. There is a toaster with clear

sides, so you'll never burn your toast

again!

APP HAPPY

By Karlly S. 6th

In a world that

is so busy, we no

longer have time to learn something

new. Thanks to new technology, we can

save time and money by learning new

things from our phone. By entering just

two words, "how to", on you smart

phone app store, you can find dozens of

apps to expand your knowledge. For

example, want to learn origami? Try the

"How to Make Origami" app. Or maybe

you haven't learned how to play an

instrument because of the cost involved,

then try the" How to Play the Grand

Piano" app, or maybe the "Guitar Skills"

app. Let's say you're not the best singer

and are too shy to even sing in front of a

teacher, try out the "Sing Sharp" app.

Guys can learn how to tie a tie and girls

can perfect putting on their makeup all

through an app. Or just avoid traffic and

enjoy the comfort of your own home

while learning how to meditate with the

"Headspace: Meditation Techniques" app.

Now there is no excuse not to at least try

to improve yourself. Get "app happy"!

Don’t forget the Boo-Boo Box!

Write any errors or typos that

you find and your name/grade

and put it in the box.

90’s Trend

Revisited

By Kourtney C. 6th

Belt bags are back! The 90’s belt bag trend is coming back and fast! Just recently, they were seen at the Alexander Wang Pre-Fall 2016 and Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2016 runways. For Chanel, these thin-strapped bags are strapped around your waist, kind of like the cooler version of a fanny-pack. But for Alexander Wang, these same bags are made to be hung around your shoulder or across your body. For me, I choose the Alexander Wang, but the question is- what will you choose?
