the tWo Wolvesdear potential donor,

I encourage you to embrace the message of hope in these pages.  Since 2010, I have witnessed over 190 young volunteers give their energy and work to impoverished communities around the world, whether for two weeks or for a year.  All proceeds of the proposed restaurant and bar described in these pages will further support the efforts of The Cardoner Project volunteers in the Jesuit Network of Southeastern Asia, as well as provide an opportunity to care for the excluded right here in Sydney.  If you have any questions about the project, feel free to contact me at any time.

The Cardoner Project is a not-for-profit, student-focused hub for volunteering, founded in 2010 by Jesuit priest, Father David Braithwaite SJ. It arose from the desires of Jesuit-educated young men to engage in further service work beyond school. A central tenet of  The Cardoner Project is ‘immersion’ opportunities for volunteering overseas in socially and economically excluded communities. Immersions provide a transformative experience that meets our young peoples’ desire to serve others and deepen their own sense of themselves in the process.

Since its inception in 2010, The Cardoner Project has grown rapidly. Initially, two young men worked for one year as volunteers in Central Vietnam. Since then some 45 volunteers have followed them in Vietnam, Thailand and Micronesia for six to twelve month placements. The Cardoner Project has also placed around 190 short-term volunteers on immersions to our partner communities around the world.

The Cardoner Project also participates in local initiatives where our university students volunteer their time to support disadvantaged, excluded communities at initiatives around Sydney, supporting other organisations to meet their goals for those in need.

In 2014, The Cardoner Project acquired its own headquarters, Jesuit House in Broadway. This exciting development has allowed the Project to grow as an organisation able to assist young people to deepen their commitment to the ongoing mission of the Church in Australia. The Cardoner Project has crucially begun to include other young people who did not experience a Jesuit education.

A further step in our story of growth will be the establishment of a social enterprise bar and restaurant, The Two Wolves, at Jesuit House. It will be a social hub for young people to meet and creatively engage in building a more just society and deepening their own spirituality.

“We are creating australia’s next generation of leaders as compassionate and proactive members of society through providing transformative experiences of service.” fr.david braithWaite, sj

The name of the new enterprise is inspired by a story of St Ignatius (saint, mystic, and founder of the Jesuits), whose experience of God and teachings orient The Cardoner Project.

the story of

The coat of arms of his family, which is carved into the lintel of the family home in Loyola, Spain includes two wolves eating from a cauldron. The imagery refers to the exceptional generosity of the Loyola family who, after feeding their family, servants and soldiers, ensured there was also enough to feed the animals as well.  Inspired by this story, The Two Wolves bar and restaurant will seek to emulate this spirit of generosity so as to strengthen ties with the local community.

As a not-for-profit social enterprise restaurant, The Two Wolves will send all profits to our partners and volunteers working on the ground with disadvantaged communities:

“i asK you, instead, to be revolutionaries, to sWim against the tide; yes, i am asKing you to rebel against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes that you are incapable of responsibility, that you are incapable of true love.”pope francis WorlD youth Day, 2014

haey tong, northern thailand

Since 2012 The Cardoner Project has placed young Australian volunteers in primary schools in the Mae Win mountainous district towards the border with Myanmar. Each year several short-term immersion groups travel there to work on building and education projects. Currently there are nine volunteers working in seven schools as English teachers. They are an important part of the Arrupe Education Project, run by Fr. Vinai Boonlue SJ and the Chiang Mai Jesuits, which aims to improve the educational outcomes of the tribal Karen and Hmong children in the mountains. By partnering with lieratu.com to and World Numeracy, we are trialling the use of software and tablets to improve the children’s access to quality education.

It takes several days of arduous trekking to reach this small village in the Himalayas where the Jesuits have an under-resourced parish. Fr. Braithwaite recently led a trek of 14 university students there to identify ways of building solidarity and offering support for them. The Cardoner Project will actively support an early childhood intervention programme that seeks to improve the nutrition and education of pre-school children relieving their mothers of the need to care for them while they work in the fields. It is also our goal to improve the educational outcomes of the children in the village school by using technology as being trialled in Thailand.

Since 2010 The Cardoner Project has supported the Sisters and the children in this very special and loving place. Over the years the Sisters have invested in a chicken farm and a water filtration and bottling business to improve the lives of the 80 children for whom they care. We have provided them with seed funding to help establish and grow these businesses. Each year immersion groups visit the orphanage to work and learn.

and its WorKersthe restaurant

Once The Two Wolves is launched and established, we will move to the next phase (late 2015) of our plan to train long-term unemployed young people on-site. We will seek to place them in employment in other venues if they desire. Jesuit Social Services (www.jss.org.au), led by Pauline Mueller in NSW, is advising us on the training element of the venture from their experience operating four similar cafés in Melbourne.

Our plan is to replicate the Sydney restaurant in Melbourne, and in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and eventually in other centres where we have partners within The Jesuit Network.

+ the space is provided to the bar and restaurant rent free, maximising cash-flow;

+ a leading team of established advisors;

+ wages are dramatically reduced through the use of volunteer supporters;

+ a vibrant, young team of 60+ volunteers who will attract their peers;

+ availability of government support to conduct training courses;

+ the appeal of a social enterprise intent that differentiates it from competitors;

+ unique performance and exhibition space;

+ high pedestrian traffic, and a strong university market from four neighbouring institutions;

+ dynamic and holistic stakeholder expertise.

Located on the ground floor of Jesuit House in the university precinct, The Two Wolves will rely on strong leadership from the young people who will run the venue for their peers. The young people will be mentored by the industry-leading management team, and will deliver a service marked by youthful energy, warmth and generosity.

Sixteen young volunteers have been selected through a rigorous application process to join a leadership-formation experience through the Bellarmine House Residency Programme, which includes a commitment to this project. The volunteers will continue to live above the area where the restaurant will be housed.  The young people are used to being the engine-room of peer-to-peer engagement for The Cardoner Project; they have now been challenged to recruit their friends to The Two Wolves, both as customers and volunteer staff.

These young people, and their friends, will be the working face and lifeblood of the restaurant.

The Cardoner Project has conducted extensive research and analysis related to launching The Two Wolves, including youth market and location demographics and trends, and an organisation environmental scan to inform our planning and the development of the business plan (available on request).

The ambiance of the bar and restaurant will be created by our young people who will run it, and as such it will encourage patronage that will build The Two Wolves brand and culture. We plan to invite local bands to perform, up-and-coming artists and photographers to exhibit, encourage emerging filmmakers to screen their work, and promote spoken word performances.

The Two Wolves will be marketed through a strategic mix of social media, content marketing across YouTube and Tumblr, digital outreach campaigns, brand outreach initiatives, university experiential promotion, the leverage of word-of-mouth from young Old Boys’ peer groups, and access to extensive Jesuit databases.

Our young people have begun filming a video to be used for crowd funding purposes. Development of The Two Wolves branding and website has also commenced and social media channels are active.

There will be a strong public relations campaign to coincide with the launch of The Two Wolves that leverages the high profile of investors and sponsors and connects with media from the angle of social activism and positive youth culture. Media exposure will be targeted at local and statewide publications, and strong media interest has already been indicated.

The Two Wolves will be supported by a strong marketing structure that ensures the bar and restaurant will remain relevant to its target group. The flexibility of the space to host large-scale parties and private functions, particularly 21st Birthday parties, contributes to the adaptable use of the venue.

The high pedestrian traffic of the university precinct will be used to advantage for guerilla marketing campaigns at Jesuit House at key times to encourage public attention, creative signage of the venue, and ultimately the vibe and atmosphere of a student-run, safe, social hang out.

The Two Wolves will also feature a menu themed to the countries supported by The Cardoner Project. This will strengthen the market’s awareness and understanding of the overseas works to which they are contributing. at Jesuit House at key times to encourage public attention, creative signage of the venue, and ultimately the vibe and atmosphere of a student-run, safe, social hang out.

corporate

Our goal is to launch this state-of-the-art bar and restaurant, and provide high-quality volunteer training programmes, by March 2015. To realise this aspiration, we require $1 million in capital sponsorships.

All surplus fundraising will be reinvested into initiatives addressing social and economic exclusion and projects for communities in need.

We are interested in leveraging this resource to create meaningful relationships between our sponsors and our networks.  This has already commenced with a number of brands interacting with us across digital and social mediums. Recent collaborations have included placing sponsor posters and collateral in our venue during functions, and creating content with our team that is published across our digital networks.

Although cash funding is of the highest need for refurbishments and resources, we would be happy to accept potential donations of technologies, furniture and other donations-in-kind.

The Cardoner Project welcomes discussions with our sponsors about how we can create value for them in mutual alignment with our ethos.
