Semester-end Report – fall 2012
Executive Summary
The Career Center, located in Schneider Hall, home to Haworth College of Business, is part of the WMU Career Network.
The Career Center is dedicated to the career development of business students and engages them in experiences that
help them launch satisfying careers.
Highlights of fall 2012:
The Business Career Day drew 134 employers (13% increase from fall 2011); 806 employers visited the Career Center
and 740 interviews were scheduled. Since fall 2011, there was a 57% increase in the number of business internships
posted on Broncojobs and 35% of the students who used 1:1 advising were pre-business students. The average starting
salary for 2011-12 BBA graduates was $43,384. For MBA/MSA graduates, it was $48,833 for MSA and $61,735 for MBA
graduates.
The Career Center staff is pleased to offer an overview of the fall 2012 accomplishments and assessment data which will
be used to continuously improve the career development and employment services that are offered to Haworth College
of Business students.

Career Education and Advising
Career Advising Career advising is offered to students and recent alumni until they launch their first professional role. During fall 2012, 418 students were seen during 604 drop-in hour and pre-scheduled appointments.

Academic and Institutional Research. The value above each bar represents the total number of student appointments seen within
each major over the total number of business students enrolled in each academic program. Students may have had more than one
appointment. Major codes used in this data are used by the WMU Registrar’s Office. Forty-three (43) students pursuing non-
business majors were also seen in The Career Center.

Career Programs: Events and Instruction
During the fall 2012 semester, 2447 students took part in events and presentations coordinated and delivered by The
Career Center.
UNIV 1030: Career Development, 2 credits
Designed for pre-business students, students enhance their
understanding of self, including interests, personality and values that
influence choosing an academic major and career pathway. Students
also developed job search, networking, and interview skills in
preparation for the internship search.
Students met with a career advisor once during the semester,
conducted informational interviews with alumni mentors, and
networked with employer representatives during resume critique and
practice interview class period.
Two sections of U1030 were offered in fall 2012.

BUS 1750: Introduction to Business Enterprise, 20 sections, approx. 677 students
“Orientation to The Career Center, BroncoJOBS, and Career Planning Using Focus”
The students learned to:

*Assess their career-related interests and correlate them to academic majors and career pathways
Events
Career Center Open Houses
*Sept. 12 and 27: The Career Center opened its doors to students, staff, and faculty in order to showcase the services
and programs available to business students. One-hundred and forty (140) students visited The Career Center.
Business Bash with Student Leadership Advisory Board
*Sept. 20: Business Bash drew student organizations, The Career Center and Haenicke Institute for Global Education
(Study Abroad) office. The Career Center was able to visit with students and discuss services and programs that would
be beneficial to business students. Career Development Guides and other resources were available for students.
Resume Critique Night
*Oct 4: Thirty-one (31) students visited The Career Center to polish their resumes before attending the Business Career
Day. Students met and received suggestions from Business Communication faculty, and employer representatives from
Charter Communications, Educational Community Credit Union, Enterprise Rent-A-Card, and Edward Jones.
Practice Interview Day with SBMA
*Oct 5: Thirteen (31) employers conducted ninety (90) practice interviews with students. The Sales and Business
Marketing Association greeted employers and student participants and
assisted in staffing the event. Students (97%) said the program was relevant
to their learning needs and 99% said the experience met the objective of
providing them interview practice and feedback.
Get Prepared for Business Career Day
*Oct. 16: Kelly Duggan (Kelly Duggan Image Consulting), Mike Turko (The Wall
Street Journal), and Jim Eckert (Sales and Business Marketing professor) spoke
with fifty-two (52) students about how to prepare for and be successful at a
career fair.
ISM Career Night with APICS
*Oct 17: ISM Career Night drew 28 employers, with 12 giving presentations
followed by networking with 140 students. Student members of APICS hosted
the event.

Food Marketing Career Night with FMA
*Oct. 17: Food Marketing Career Night was successful with 15 employers and over 85 students attending. The Food
Marketing Association students attended employer presentations followed by
networking.
Business Career Day
*Oct. 18: With a 13% increase over last year, 134 employers attended
the annual Business Career Day. With assistance from the Sales and
Business Marketing Association members, just over 900 students
attended.

*Oct. 19: Thirty-one (31) employers conducted interviews following the
Business Career Day.

A total of 1615 business-related full time jobs and internships were posted on BroncoJOBS.

On-Campus Interviewing Program
The Career Center houses eight interview rooms that are used by employers to conduct interviews on campus.
Employers request on-line interview schedules using BroncoJOBS or they self-schedule interviews following a job posting
or attendance at a career fair, event, or networking program.
