Roof & Lighting Fund Monthly Update We are grateful for your generous donations to our roof and LED lighting fund which were made in the second collection on April 1, to-taling $15,382. Contributions in our blue en-velopes are specifically designated for a new church roof and improvements to our church lighting. Funds received in the blue envelopes this fiscal year total $47,172 toward a goal of $400,000.

The next blue envelope collection will be May 5-6. We will have a second collection on the first weekend of each month until we have reached our goal. The first phase of the lighting project, replacing 49 existing fixtures with LED lighting and add-ing 48 new LED fixtures to the worship space, has already been fully funded with private donations. In order to complete the remaining lighting phases and replace our church roof, we are asking you to bring your blue envelopes and place them in the basket at the second collection. Blue envelopes will also be available at the church entrances. Electronic donations can be made through Give Cen-tral at: https://www.givecentral.org/location/181/event/6239.

Thank you for generously donating to the maintenance of our church

Happy Easter! Lent is over; Christ has conquered sin and death. Now

we are celebrating the 50 days of the Easter season, from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, when we rejoice in the Risen Christ who came for our benefit to give us the hope of new life, the hope of eternal life.

It is with deep gratitude and a spirit of rejoicing that I want to thank the many people who assist in the planning and execution of our prayerful liturgical celebrations. With-out the dedicated volunteers and staff we could not do what we do! So allow me to try to thank them.

First, I would like to thank our Liturgy Planning Team consisting of Kris Partain, Anne DeFranco, Dennis Valenti-ni, Eugene O’Brien, Dan Harris, Jennifer Kolber, Jim Lobus, Judy Dioszegi, Jasmine Sosa, John Scanlan, Jane Bornhoeft, Susan Speth and Ron Vanasdlen. It is their wisdom and guidance that makes all of this possible.

I want to thank our proclaimers for the many hours of preparation so they proclaim God’s Word in a manner in which His Word should be, with love and conviction. Their proclamation of the Word is the best!

Altar Servers, both children and adults, are thanked for their many hours of practice and study of the liturgy plans to ensure they know what they need to do. They do it well!

Thank you to our Music Ministry led by Ron Vanasdlen: the choirs, cantors, and musicians who by using their talents invite us into a more prayerful experience of worshiping God.

Our thanks to the Keepers of the Feast Team led by Judy Dioszegi. This team includes Kris Partain, Carol Suvanich, Pat Smuck, Diane Vasquez, Eileen Szuba, and Marcia Juracan. They spend countless hours working on our seasonal themes and church environment.

Thanks to Carol Suvanich and the women who volun-teer with our floral arrangements. They do a magnificent job making our sanctuary a beautiful place for all of us to worship God. The Easter display is just beautiful. They are artists! Thank you to our many liturgical ministers, Sacristans, Liturgy Coordinators, Eucharistic Ministers for their dedi-cation and focus on our Lord’s work. It is second to none. And to our greeters and ushers, who greet all of us and our visitors with big warm smiles. Thank you to our bulletin edi-tor Marie Tuohy, who spends countless hours working on our bulletins and, most especially, our worship aids for Holy Week and Easter. Gratitude to the maintenance team led by Dan Harris, and their constant care of setting up, taking down and the continuous cleaning of our church that makes it a welcom-ing place for us, but most importantly our visitors. Lastly, I would like to thank all of our clergy: our Pastor Fr. Trout for his confidence in us, and to Fr. Joe, Fr. Martin, and Fr. John Hennessey, and to Deacons Dave, Dennis, and Mike for their support in all we do. Most parishioners do not see or experience what goes on behind the scenes to make sure we are ready—the count-less hours spent going over the detail of each week’s liturgies, meetings to ensure we cover all of the details, many prac-tices for Holy Week, and the getting all items ready for our parish community. It is a privilege to serve the people of St. Joseph Catholic Church and it is with profound gratitude that I thank all of you for making my ministry here so meaningful!

Rejoicing in the Risen Christ, Deacon George Kashmar, Pastoral Director of Ministries

World Day of Prayer will be observed on Sunday, April 22Also known as “Good Shepherd Sunday,” the purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill the Lord’s instruction to “Pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord’s call to married life, the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or however Christ is calling them to follow him as his disciples.Prayer for Vocations: Almighty Father, we beg You for an increase in religious vocations and holy marriages in our parish. Help us to be generous in our response to Your call. Choose from our homes those who are needed for Your work and strengthen us with the courage to say “yes” and to follow You. Help us as a parish and as fami-lies to recognize and foster vocations to the priesthood, religious life, lay ministry or whatever path You are call-ing us to follow. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen. The Vocations Ministry offers prayers for vocations with exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every

Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in St. Joseph Church. Please join us in praying that all people throughout the world will discern and accept the mission that God has planned for them.

Mass for All Who Grieve the Loss of a ChildJoin our faith community as we celebrate this special Mass on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of this Mass is two-fold: first to remember the children we have lost due to accident, illness, miscarriage or abortion. We may have lost them recently or long ago. Their age doesn’t matter; they are always our chil-dren. The second is to offer comfort and support to the parents, other family members and friends as we join together in prayer

and ask for God’s healing grace. This Mass includes participation in a beautiful floral tribute and a special prayer of healing. Refreshments will be served after Mass. Sponsored by the St. Joseph Bereavement Ministry

Shout Praises to the Lord!Enroll in the Ministry of Praise! The Ministry of Praise is a call to those in nursing homes, retirement homes, the home-bound and all seniors. What will Ministers be asked to do? Simply pray. Each month you will receive a let-ter from a staff member or parishioner asking you to pray for intentions. It is a call to join in a chorus of prayer. There are no dues or meetings. If you are in-terested or know someone who may be interested, please contact Debbie Costa at 847-347-3601 or email Debbie at [email protected].

Ministry of Care Home VisitsIf you or your loved one are ill or elderly and unable to attend Mass on the weekend, we would like to hear from you. Our trained Ministers of Care are available to visit your home to bring Holy Communion. Please contact the

Parish Office (847-362-2073), or Arlyss Lasecki (847-778-8023) or Judy Salzman (847-393-7689) to arrange for a Home Visit with Communion.

Are You in Need of Receiving a Gluten-Free Host?If you, or someone you know, is in need of receiving a gluten-free Host, we have a new way of accommodating you. Beginning in April, we will be consecrating a number of gluten-free Hosts that will be kept in a special ciboria in the Taber-nacle. This ciboria will be available at the serving station of the presider for each Mass. If you need a gluten-free Host, please come to Communion at the presider’s station and indicate that you receive a gluten-free Host. The presider will then serve you from the bowl holding the gluten-free Hosts. We welcome all those needing to receive gluten-free.

Kairos Men’s Prison Retreat #23 at Stateville Correctional Center April 28-May 1:We Need Your Help Outside the Walls

An important part of this Prison Retreat is the prayer of many individuals outside the walls asking God to work in the hearts of these incarcerated men attending the retreat Saturday through Tuesday. The Kairos Prayer Vigil is a resource by which friends of Kairos pray for the residents and the Kairos team by signing up for a one-half hour (or more) time slot, during which you raise all in your personal prayer for that time frame. We offer those who wish to pray for us the opportunity to formally sign up for a time on the vigil which will ultimately be conveyed materially to the residents on a 50 foot-long prayer scroll so that the residents see someone either has been or will be pray-ing for them at all times of the Kairos Retreat #23 at Stateville. If you are interested please use the following website http://www.3dayol.org. Once on the site, click on “Prayer Vigil Listings” and scroll down to Stateville Correctional Center. Then click on the actual weekend date which allows you to select a preferred day and time to pray. Thank you for joining in this Ministry to bring the light of Christ into the darkness of prison.

Employment Ministry to Meet on Wednesday, April 18 At our next meeting, we will build on Dan Barber’s April 4 presentation on how to create a compelling resume. Bring in your resume for a free One-on-one Resume Re-view and critique by HR professionals to help you fine-tune your resume, and present yourself most compellingly to prospective employers. We will meet from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on April 18 at the Formation Center (112 N. Milwaukee, Lib-ertyville 60048), Room C. Please enter from the rear of the building. Please join us—we look forward to seeing you there! The St. Joseph Employment Ministry assists the unem-

ployed and under-employed in the pursuit of personally and professionally fulfilling work. All are welcome. Anyone with a job to fill or an interest in assisting job-seekers is also invited to attend. Meetings are

normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month and usually feature topical presentations followed by group networking. If you have questions, please contact John Jennings at [email protected]. Employers are invited to post open positions with us by sending an email to: [email protected].

—————————Social Justice & Service

This past Monday, we celebrated the Annun-ciation, when Mary learned she would conceive a child. God would become incarnate in Jesus Christ—the divine would take on human flesh and blood—to reveal God’s love for us. Mary was struck by the awesome responsibility. Yet God would be with her. Joy filled her heart. The con-ception of every child reveals God’s love. It brings responsibility for new life AND joy anticipating the flowering of that life. The Annunciation’s proximity to Holy Week this year brought the reminder, though, that Mary’s joy was turned into mourning on Good Friday. She stood at the foot of the cross and watched her son die. It is one of the worst things that can happen to any parent. Yet, Mary’s Good Fri-day mourning turned into a sacred peace with her child’s glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday. We can find life’s joy turned into mourning with the

The Annunciation and the Sacred Life of Every Child death of any friend or family member but particularly

when it is the death of one of our children. Whether the child is unborn, newly-born, toddler, teen or fifty years old, parents are meant to outlive their children, to watch each flower into the fullness of life. We grieve

even as we know every life flowers in eternity. This Tuesday, April 17, at 7:00 pm, we will celebrate a Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church that honors life

from conception to death in a very special way. We will remember and honor all our parish’s children who have passed into eternal life. We will stand in

faith with the parents who have suffered that loss, acknowl-edge the Lord’s merciful presence and share our commu-nity’s love and comfort. Come and pray with us! We know the Lord is with every child and every parent from conception to heaven’s gate. Let us pray that the world will cherish every person in every station of life and at every stage of development.

St. Joseph Catholic Church Welcoming Ministry

Each year, well over 100 new families join St. Joseph Catholic Church. We invite you to share your love for our parish by becoming an “ambassador” to one of these new faces. We invite you to

undertake a simple act on behalf of the parish. It is not labor-intensive and certainly not time-consuming. We are asking you to extend a welcome to a new family. You won’t have to figure out how to do this by your-self. We’ll give you some tools (a gift basket, some parish resource information, a “how to” guide) to make the pro-cess simple and best of all, welcoming. Remember when someone took you aside to be your friend, showed you the ropes or just helped you feel like you belonged? If you are interested in sharing your pas-sion a few times each year with a new family, please call Tom Zimmer at 847-322-6013 and we’ll show you how you can help.

Thoughts on Giving“Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ But they were startled and frightened…” (Luke 24:36-37) Throughout the day we have many opportunities to “see the face of Jesus” in others and to “be the face of Jesus” to others. Do we take that opportunity to provide “peace” to those we encounter or are we afraid of what others will think of us and do nothing? Pray for the strength to live a “God-centered” life and not a “self-centered” life.

Breaking Open the Word

A Journey to Discipleship—Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture1. Proclaim God’s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence.2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way.3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be.

Next Sunday’s Gospel — John 10:11-18Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Response: Glory to You, O Lord

Reflection

Continuing our journey through the Easter season, we explore the great gift that our beloved Father has provided for us. He sent Jesus to show His abundant and sustaining love and to teach us how to live in that love. Next Sunday’s gospel presents us with the model of the Good Shepherd. A shepherd is one who is responsible for leading the flock to the sheepfold, a place where they can be safely nourished. Clearly, Jesus is our Good Shepherd for He laid down His life for us, His flock, so that we might have life in abundance. However, it might not be as obvious that Jesus has left us with the gift of His Church which serves as our temporal Good Shepherd. In today’s world, the Catholic faith and those who serve to preserve it are seen as restrictive of our freedom, keeping us from enjoying life. Next Sunday’s gospel encourages us to think otherwise. Our faith and the Church is a sheepfold, a place of safety where we can live in the abundance God desires for us. Scripture and the teachings of the Church help us to know the boundaries God in His infinite wisdom has provided for us. The evil one is constantly trying to tempt us to leave this safe place and indulge in the many vices and pleasures of the world, which can only lead us away from the love of the Lord. On the other hand, our Good Shepherd Church reminds us, through its teaching and the Sacraments, of the sustaining and soul-satisfying grace that is abundantly available to us through our Baptism. Christ poignantly reminds us that while there is only one true shepherd there is only supposed to be one flock as well. Over the centuries many have found a myriad of reasons to separate themselves from the One Shepherd. Reconciliation and unity elude us often. How can we expect to enjoy the joy and peace that Christ has promised us if we live with division in our day to day lives? As you enter the Church next Sunday, you are invited to enter a place of safety and abundance. Prepare your heart to be nourished by the Word of God and to be strengthened by His Body and Blood. As you leave Church, do so with the confidence that you have chosen a life of safety and abundance in the sheepfold which is your Catholic faith. Do so with the resolve to bring more unity into your world.

For further reflection on the sheepfold as an image of the Church, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 754, 874 and 2686.

Reflection Questions 1. What can I do to draw closer to God? Does contemplating the gift of the Catholic faith help me feel nourished and protected? How does thinking about God as the ‘perfect shepherd’ impact my relationship with Him?2. What can I do to better know the safe boundaries of the sheepfold of my faith? What specifically can I do to identify and resist the worldly temptations to be divisive or stray from the flock? 3. What can I do to encourage those I encounter in my daily life to share in the safety and abundance of living a life with our Good Shepherd, Jesus? What can I do to bring greater unity into my home? The Church? My community?

Readings for the Week

have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.”The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shep-herd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I
