THE CASE FOR POLICE USE OF DRONES
➢ Drones remove a major workplace hazard for law enforcement personnel-that
of traffic related injuries which account for more than any other workplace
hazard, including gunfire.
➢ Drones provide law enforcement personnel a tool to assess situations before
approaching or getting out of a vehicle, placing themselves and others at risk.
➢ Drones provide a greater degree of video and audio capture currently
unavailable in traditional mounted police dash cams.
➢ Drones can be easily modified to include LCD screens, audio capture and
relay devices to sensory mechanisms (i.e Breathalyzer, drug analysis etc..)
➢ Drones provide constitutional compliance when compared to red-light
cameras since its operation requires human involvement.
➢ Drone use renders nonverbal and verbal communication which can result in
lethal outcomes non-existent, placing emphasis on action based reaction.
➢ Drones can be modified to include facial recognition to alert law enforcement
personnel about a person's background, providing valuable time to formulate
an appropriate response to each individual.
➢ Drones amplify police presence in high crime areas which can over time
result in crime reduction.
➢ Drone use is malleable and can, if needed, be utilized to provide other
services not only by police but also in the private sector (i.e Drone based
security for homes and businesses, neighborhood patrol drones etc…)
➢ Drone use can be expanded beyond traffic related incidents to usage in
responding to domestic calls, hostage situations etc…➢ Limited and strictly controlled usage of drones by law enforcement in job
functions ( i.e not for surveillance purposes) is socially acceptable since it
results in a safer workplace for police officers and better services for the
general public.
