Celebrant and Preacher: The Dean

The Ministry of the Word

Sentence of the Day: They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat upon them, for the One who loves them will lead them and guide them beside the springs of water. Isaiah 49:10

Collect for the Day: God of Light and Love, you come into the world not to condemn but to redeem; enter our lives, again, with your love, bringing new life, eternal and abundant, so we, your servants, may show light and love to others. Through Jesus Christ Our Redeemer, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Season of Lent Almighty and merciful God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent; create in us new and contrite hearts, so that when we turn to you and confess our sins we may receive your full and perfect forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. The First Reading: Numbers 21: 4-9

St Paul’s Cathedral

Welcome to St Paul’s Cathedral.

The Cathedral Church of St Paul the Apostle

4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. 5The people spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.’ 6Then the Lord sent poisonousserpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. 7The people came to Moses and said, ‘We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people. 8And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.’ 9So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. The Second Reading:

Ephesians 2:1-10

You were dead through the trespasses and sins 2in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. 3All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. 4But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— 9not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. The Gospel Reading:

John 3: 14-21

We stand to face the Word of God in Christ.

14And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. 20For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. 21But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.’

Ten Mozart Masterpieces

Two of New Zealand's highly respected classical musicians, Sydney Manowitz (violin) and Donald Cullington (piano) look forward to appearing again at this year's Fringe Festival in Dunedin. Having given three concerts of all Beethoven’s ten violin-and-piano sonatas in 2016, they performed all the eight by JS Bach in two very well received recitals at the 2017 Fringe Festival. This year they will focus on Mozart, offering two concerts of Ten Mozart Masterpieces: Music for Violin and Keyboard at 3.00 pm, Sunday 18th March in Knox Church, Dunedin, noted for its fine acoustics. Some of these works of genius stem from Mozart's maturity, but the players will also enjoy presenting two remarkable sonatas by the boy Wolfgang – aged 8!!! Admission is free and all are welcome. Koha would be much appreciated.

Cathedral Flower Arrangements

Desperately needed: a kind person to oversee the Cathedral's flower arrangements. Either: by being responsible for organising, on occasions, commercial outsourcing for the arrangement, checking for water levels, removing dead flowers and replacing the arrangement with an artificial one when indicated. Or: doing the arrangements and being responsible for them. Please contact The Cathedral Office (4772336) or Libby Cutfield (4776677)

Serving at the Altar

With the return of Phillip Lewis, it is wonderful to have him available again to train and encourage all who may be willing to learn how to share in worship through service at the altar. Phillip can be

contacted at 03 454 4404 or at [email protected]. Do consider this exciting opportunity to serve God in the sanctuary.

Health and Safety Volunteers

Diocesan compliance with Health and Safety requirements obliges us to have volunteers who are either medically trained or prepared to attend a St John’s First Aid course, who are willing to provide first aid

support if needed in the Cathedral during our services. If you are willing to help, please talk to Dean Trevor or the Wardens.

A Prayer for Refugees

God of compassion and mercy, your children cry out in their distress. We pray for your guidance in bestowing wisdom upon our leaders. May their hearts be attuned to your will. May they respond with open arms to welcome those who flee terror and war. We ask your protection on all those without homes, and we who have shelter give us a hunger for justice. May the power of Your Holy Spirit inspire us to speak out for those without voice. In the name of Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour we pray, Amen.

A Prayer for the Middle East and Ukraine Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: so mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
