DAY OF PENTECOST

Today, Pentecost Sunday, we generally say

we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit.

However, what we do not openly recog-

nize is that the Holy Spirit has always

existed. When we read in John 15: 26,

‘When the Advocate comes, whom I will

send to you from the Father, the Spirit of

truth who comes from the Father, he will

testify on my behalf,’ we are basically re-

ferred back to John 1:1 ‘In the beginning

was the Word’ – This says that the Lord

Jesus has always been and refers to the

eternal self-existence of Jesus before He

became flesh as noted in John 1:14. It is

equally true that the Holy Spirit has al-

ways existed and been active in the affairs

of the world along with God the Father,

and God the Son. These events all oc-

curred before the manifestation of the

Holy Spirit at Pentecost. That is what we

celebrate on the day of Pentecost – the

manifestation or revealing of the Holy

Spirit to the Apostles.

Gradual Hymn:

O thou who camest from above

The pure celestial fire to impart,

Kindle a flame of sacred love

On the mean altar of my heart.

There let it for your glory burn

With inextinguishable blaze,

And trembling to its source return,

In humble prayer and fervent praise.

Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire

To work, and speak, and think for thee;

Still let me guard the holy fire,

And still stir up your gift in me,

Ready for all your perfect will,

My acts of faith and love repeat,

Till death your endless mercies seal,

And make the sacrifice complete.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns May 15th 2016

Offertory Hymn

Come down, O Love divine,

Seek now this soul of mine,

And visit it with your own ardour glowing;

O Comforter, draw near,

Within my heart appear

And kindle it, your holy flame bestowing.

There let it freely burn,

Till earthly passions turn

To dust and ashes, in its heat consuming;

And let your glorious light

Shine ever on my sight

And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

Let holy charity

My outer garment be,

And lowliness become my inner clothing:

True lowliness of heart,

Which takes the humbler part

And for its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong

With which the soul will long

Shall far outpass the power of human telling;

For none can guess its grace

Till we become the place

In which the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

Final Hymn

Holy Spirit, come confirm us

In the truth that Christ makes known;

We have faith and understanding

Through your helping gifts alone.

Holy Spirit, come console us,

Come as advocate to plead,

Loving Spirit from the Father,

Grant in Christ the help we need.

Holy Spirit, come renew us,

Come yourself to make us live:

Holy, through your loving presence,

Holy, through the gifts you give.

Holy Spirit, come possess us,

You the love of Three in One,

Holy Spirit of the Father,

Holy Spirit of the Son.

26. Lord, how various | are your | works :

in wisdom you have made them all,

and the | earth is | full of . your | creatures. 27. There is the wide, im- | measura- . ble | sea : there move living things without | number, | great and | small; 28. There go the ships, | to and | fro : and there is that Leviathan

whom you | formed to | sport . in the | deep. 29. These all | look to | you : to give them their | food in | due | season. REFRAIN 30. When you give it to | them, they | gather it : when you open your hand they are | satisfied . with | good | things. 31. When you hide your face, | they are | troubled : when you take away their breath,

they | die and . re- | turn to . their | dust. 32. When you send forth your spirit they | are cre- | ated :

and you re- | new the | face . of the | earth.

33. May the glory of the Lord en- | dure for | ever :

may the | Lord re- | joice . in his | works. REFRAIN

34. If he look upon the earth, | it shall | tremble :

if he but touch the | mountains, | they shall | smoke.

35. I will sing to the Lord as | long as . I | live :

I will praise my | God while . I | have . any | being.

†36. May my meditation be | pleasing | to him :

for my | joy shall . be | in the | Lord. REFRAIN

Our Cathedral ministry to those in need in our Community Our shelves are very healthy at the moment and we thank all who assist with food. Winter is approaching and that will bring an increase in assistance required so please continue

this very worthwhile ministry. Tins of soups (all varieties), meals (packets or tins), pasta and pasta sauces, breakfast cereals, perhaps porridge for winter might add variety.
