Parish Staff

My dear sisters and brothers Christ,

Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate the Cathedral’s reopening. I wanted to reiterate the following in case you missed it:

1. Capacity restrictions are lifted. However, social distancing guidelines remain in effect. Please sit six feet apart from unrelated worshipers. We will refrain from offering the Sign of Peace and the Holy Water fonts will be empty.

2. All persons 10 years and older must wear masks

3. Bishop Burbidge has extended the dispensation from Mass and Holy Days of Obligation. Those over 65, and those with underlying health conditions are encouraged to stay home. As always, if you do not yet feel comfortable joining us in person, please know you are not committing a sin. I do ask that you keep Sunday holy in some way and watch our live stream Mass at 9:30am and or 12:45pm.

4.Our Mass schedule remains the same: Daily Mass at 7:00am & 12:05pm; Saturday at 9:00am. Sunday Vigil at 5:30pm, 7:00am (Quiet Mass) 9:30am, 12:45pm (Spanish) This allows us proper time in between Masses for a thorough cleaning of the Cathedral.

I am truly grateful for all the kind words, thoughtful letters and financial sacrifices you have made for our parish, and our sisters and brothers throughout our community. You have lifted my spirits, and that of my brother priests; you have reached out to those in isolation and in need. You have walked humbly with our God; you are truly His servants. God bless. Father Posey

FROM OUR DEACON:

After months of “stay at home” orders, travel restrictions, and limits placed on our freedoms, if you’re like me, you have felt very constrained! We have lost (temporarily) the freedoms we have become accustomed to associate with a “normal life.” We have not been able to travel on vacations, to have large weddings or funerals, or even been able to leave our house! This is disheartening and understandably. Saint Terese of Lisieux, though, is a good guide to help find our interior freedom even as many of our exterior freedoms have been taken away.

Once, St. Terese went on a marvelous pilgrimage from France to Rome before entering a convent to dedicate her whole life to prayer.

“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.” (Ma hew 13:22)

Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life? Are you so caught up in earthly ac vi es that you have no me for God? Gra tude and generosity are virtues that we should strive to do on a daily basis. Every decision we make either takes us one step closer to God or one step further away. What we receive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with others all the other days of the week as well.

Deacon Fioramon Con nued from Page 2

She would go from seeing the Swiss Alps’ “towering Moun-tains, whose snow-capped peaks were lost in the clouds” to never leaving the physically restric ve walls of the convent again (sound a bit like our recent quaran ne?). In her journal, “Story of a Soul,” Terese contrasts the freedom of nature’s beauty and the confines of the convent she had willingly ac-cepted. She says: “I thought of my life as it really is, with its restric ons and its li le hidden sacrifices every day, and I saw how easily one might become so taken up with oneself, that one might forget the glorious purpose of one’s calling.” She then turns to God in prayer and says, “the thought of God’s majesty and greatness will put my own small troubles [and restric ons] in their place, I will love Him and not make myself unhappy.”

Our restric ons do not need to make us unhappy! In our second reading this Sunday, St. Paul speaks of “the glorious freedom of the children of God.” This freedom is not so much about our ability to do many things, as it is about our ability to be “Children of God.” Saint Terese is a model for us of this true interior freedom. I would call it St. Terese’s “Convent-ual freedom.” (a bad pun I know!) But If our own lack of freedom during this pandemic disheartens us, we need only remind ourselves of that last, true freedom which no one can take away: the freedom of being Children of God. Saint Terese of the Child Jesus, Pray for us!
