This past year’s Catholic Appeal in Maine raised an extraordinary amount: $2.6 million. This Report highlights how those funds – your gifts – were used.

The stories of Fr. Paul Marquis, Kim Wick, Theresa Therrault and Mike Smith convey just some of the ways your gift is put to work. Consider the lives touched directly and indirectly by these four dedicated people as they live out their faith. Moreover, the people these four people touch go on, in turn, to help many others, creat-ing a ripple effect. Your gift, then, generates substantial returns in every corner of Maine while spreading the message of the Gospel.

Many more stories could be told; many more examples could be cited; many more programs could be highlighted.

So it is with deep appreciation and sincere humility that we provide a highlight accounting of the 2011-12 Catholic Appeal.

Thank you and God bless you.

Fr. Paul Marquis helps an elderly cancer patient at the Maine Medi-cal Center better connect with his family during what may be the last days of his life.

At the other end of life’s spectrum, Kim Wick discusses creative ways for Sunday School teachers in Cluster Seven (Pittsfield, Dexter, Dover-Foxcroft, Milo) to introduce children to the message of the Gospel and the meaning of faith.

Theresa Therrault makes plans for fellow University of Maine students to attend a Faith Retreat, where they will discuss central issues, such as the need to put God first.

Mike Smith meets with lay leaders at a Portland parish to discuss ways to make a difference in the lives of the needy, given the inevitable budget and time constraints.

The annual Catholic Appeal supports such connections every day, around the state, throughout the year.

Fr. Paul Marquis, Catholic Chaplain at the Maine Medical Center, considers it a sacred honor to be at the bedside of people who are undergoing serious illness or, in some cases, facing death. “I feel like I’m standing on holy ground when I’m with people who are coming face-to-face with the hard truths in their lives. They’re becoming real in their encounters with God, learning to appreciate every moment.”

Sometimes Fr. Paul talks with patients; at other times, he just sits quietly by the bedside, a prayerful presence. At all times, he feels re-energized by what he terms “Advent moments,” the spiritual opportunities that arrive through suffering.

The Portland Diocese maintains a presence at Maine Medical Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Fr. Paul is assisted by Sister Margaret Ann Coyne, Fr. Greg Dube and Fr. Norm Richard as well as devoted “Sunday teams” of parishioners who come to be with patients.

Fr. Paul notes that, “It’s extremely important that we maintain a Catholic presence at the Medical Center.” Indeed the Catholic Appeal makes it possible to provide hospital chaplains at Maine Medical in Portland, Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston; and Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor.

Kim Wick moved back to Maine with her family in 2003. Two years later, she was asked to assume leadership of the Lifelong Faith Forma-tion program at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield. “I said I wasn’t qualified, and they said ‘We’ll teach you what you need to know.’”

Kim completed the Catechetical Certificate program at the Diocese, and today she oversees the Lifelong Faith Formation programs for St. Agnes Parish in Pittsfield and Our Lady of the Snows Parish which includes St. Anne in Dexter, St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dover-Foxcroft, St. Francis Xavier and St. Paul the Apostle Churches in Milo. The programs range from pizza parties in which older teens discuss the meaning of life to middle school retreats to a Catholicism series for adults, featuring videos, scripture readings and workbooks.

The annual Women’s Conference, sponsored by the Diocese, strength-ened Kim’s own spiritual growth. “I went in dragging on the ground and came out flying. I discovered that God is with you no matter how bad things get.”

In her not-so-spare time, Kim has written and performed Christian mu-sic and published two children’s books. The Certificate program shined a light on her and she, in turn, has shined a lot on many others through her strong faith and good work.

“Campus Ministry has opened so many doors to me!”

When Theresa Therrault first came to the University of Maine, she did not intend to get involved in the Catholic Student Association (CSA). “I didn’t think I needed it,” she says, looking back. Then she took a work-study job at the Newman Center, the headquarters for Catholic Campus Ministry. “Something drew me here, and I liked it right away.”

Theresa was so well nourished by the CSA programs, that she ran for president of the Catholic Student Association in the spring of her first year – and won.

In addition to working 15-20 hours a week at the Newman Center for her work-study job, Theresa works closely with the Campus Ministry Team (Father Bill Labbe, Kris Moody and Joann Hall) to plan and lead the many programs which run throughout the academic year: e.g. Sunday Night Student Mass, Wednesday Night Suppers, Friday Night Adoration and Reconciliation, Bible Studies & Faith Sharing Groups, Retreats, and so on.

“My faith has been a constant in my life,” says Theresa, “and this place fosters a culture of faith. There’s no place I’d rather be.”

After graduation, this Parks, Recreation and Tourism major, plans to spend some time in mission work and eventually enter the Peace Corps or pursue a graduate degree.

“We help parishes figure out how to serve people in need.”

Mike Smith graduated from Williams College with a philosophy major and a determination “to live out my faith in the service of God and His people.” Today he’s doing just that as the Parish Outreach Coordinator for Catholic Charities.

Before working directly with parishes, Mike’s main responsibility involved taking calls from people in need from around the state as part of Project Relief and Hope, a Catholic Charities Parish Social Ministry program.

The Matthew 25 program was launched in 2011 as collaboration between Catholic Charities and parishes so that the charity can be fo-cused on the local level. As Annette Rioux, Program Director for Parish Social Ministry, explains, “The Matthew 25 Project is about forming collaborative relationships with the parishes around fulfilling our baptismal call to serve people in need. If we can work at this together, we’re going to be helping more people in need.”

Mike trains volunteers and staff from around the state, helping them discover and use resources to assist people at the local level. “We help people in the parishes figure out what to do and how to do it,” says Mike, emphasizing that the Matthew 25 program is designed to empower, not to take over.

2012 CATHOLIC APPEAL OUR CHURCH AT WORK IN MAINE

July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013PARISH PERFORMANCE

Each year, priest and parishioners work diligently to raise the funds that support the ministries and programs of the Catholic Appeal. The following page lists each parish and the results of those efforts for the 2012 Catholic Appeal. The parishes are ordered according to how much over their goal they were able to raise.

Our goal for the 2012 Catholic Appeal was $2.8 million. We raised just over $2,630,000.

Many thanks to all who gave generously. Thanks especially to those pastors who faithfully support the Appeal with extraordinary dedication, reaching their goals - and even exceeding them!
