Like some of you, I sit down every four
years to watch the Winter Olympics. The bobsled
and luge events are two of my favorites to
watch. I also enjoy watching the pairs figure
skating or ice dancing. I typically don’t watch
figure skating outside of the Olympics, but for
some reason I get caught up in the event every
four years; maybe it’s the hype.
These skaters often spend years together
perfecting their routines. It is interesting to
watch the best pairs in the world as they move
together, how in-sync they must be with one
another, and the trust they have in each other
to perform some of their moves. To be at their
very best takes a lot of hard work, and to receive
a medal in their event the two individuals must
become one on the ice.
The first reading from Genesis indicates
that God wants to find a suitable partner for the
man. Despite his best efforts, God was initially
unable to find a companion for the man. Finally,
when the man is in a deep sleep, God takes a
rib from him and creates a woman, someone
similar in likeness. Man was not created to be
alone but to have a special relationship with a
woman. And as the reading concludes, we are
told that a man and a woman, though two separate
people will become one.
In Mark’s gospel, Jesus is again challenged
by the Pharisees, this time about the lawfulness
of divorce. Jesus reminds them of the scripture
and instructs them on the creation of man and
woman. He places a special emphasis on the
importance of man and woman, the two becoming
one. Jesus informs them that what God joins
together, humanity must not separate.
So why the reference of the skaters with
today’s readings. I think that a lot of good
marriages are like a good skating tandem. The
two must become one to have success! Just as
a strong skating tandem must take a lot of time
to practice, a married couple must put in much
time together working on their marriage. A
strong trust must be developed to achieve
success for both couples. The couples must
get their timing down to be in concert with each
other. Both the skating couples and married
couples must know each other’s strengths and
areas for improvement to be able to have success.
That success often comes from feeding off of
each other’s strengths. There will be times
when one or both members of the couples will
fall down. When that happens, one or both
individuals must step up and pick up the other
person. And, after years of being together, a
married couple must be like the skating tandem
to be able to make changes to their routine to
keep improving at what they do.
So, whether a marriage is a year old, ten
years old or more than forty years old, that
oneness (unity) is so important. If that unity
and love for each other is achieved, there is no
need for separation. And that gold medal for a
successful marriage can be worn proudly
around your neck! Blessings to all married
couples for a long and fruitful married life!
Readings for the Week
Monday Gal 1:6-12/Lk 10:25-37
Tuesday Gal 1:13-24/Lk 10:38-42
Wednesday Gal 2:1-2, 7-14/Lk 11:1-4
Thursday Gal 3:1-5/Lk 11:5-13
Friday Gal 3:7-14/Lk 11:15-26
Saturday Gal 3:22-29/Lk 11:27-28
Sunday Wis 7:7-11/Heb 4:12-13/Mk 10:17-30
Join us next week as our readings’ focus is: “God offers us the perspective of eternity.” In a secular world, so many people today have a limited perspective, valuing and pursuing what they see before their eyes and what benefits them in this current life. God calls us, as followers of Jesus, to take the longer view – to pursue eternal values, trusting that God will also give us what we need here and now.

DIVINE SAVIOR SCHOOL NEWS
Divine Savior School is currently conducting its Annual Giving Appeal. The operation of the school depends upon parish subsidy, parent tuition, and fundraising. Apple Pie Sales, the Spring Auction, the Basketball Tournament, and the Annual Giving Appeal comprise our major third-source funding efforts. The school community is very grateful for your support of all our efforts. A contribution to our Annual Giving would assist us in paying for several major costs we incurred this summer: window treatments, flooring, and technology upgrades. The server crashed and had to be re-placed along with the recovery of all data. Additional chrome books needed to be purchased as well.
Please consider supporting your parish school with a financial donation along with your prayers. To support Catholic education for only 10 cents per day would be a contribution of $36.50. A reply form is included in the mailing that you may have received this past week or will be receiving next week.
FORMED.ORG
Education is lifelong task. To continue educating both yourself and your family in faith, we invite you to find out about FORMED.
Because our parishes participate in FORMED, enter our “parish code” J246GV on the website (FORMED.org) after you set up your own account with a username and password.
You can begin accessing great catechetical, devotional and formational resources that include videos, audio talks, and e-books. There is even an APP for your mobile device!
Hold in Prayer
Please keep Peter Kraus and Allison Thompson in prayer as they prepare to be married this coming Saturday, October 13. May their lives be lived in love on their wedding day and beyond.
Holy Hour
SS. Peter & Paul will hold Holy Hour on Thursday, October 11at 10 am. Please join us in the chapel for prayer, scripture, silence and song.
Annual Parish Meeting
Ss. Peter & Paul’s Annual Parish Meeting will take place in Voland Hall on Sunday, October 21, immediately following Mass (approximately 10:45 am). All are invited and welcome.
For Such A Time As This
Our Church is going through a difficult time - wounding but purifying. I invite any woman who wishes to join me in the SS Peter & Paul Parish Center at 8AM on the first Sunday morning of each month for prayer, scripture study, and community. Let's fall more deeply in love with Jesus and allow Him to accompany us in our joys and sorrows! If children prevent you from attending, let me know and we can recruit some teens to babysit. Our first gathering will be Sunday, October 7 at 8 AM. RSVP not required, but it would be helpful:
[email protected]. Hope to see you on the 7th! It's all a blessing, sisters!!
Ministry Schedules
The new ministry schedules are done and if you provided the parish office with an email address one has been sent to you via email. Other schedules can be picked up in the back of church. If you’d like to receive them via email, or if you did not receive one, please contact the office.
Memorial Scroll
In the month of November, we remember our parish-ioners and loved ones who have passed away this past year. As is customary at SSPP, we will have their names on the scroll and it will be in church during the month of November. Please contact the parish office no later than October 29th, so the scroll can be created.
Cemetery Clean Up
Fall cleanup of the cemetery began October 1. All spring and summer artificial arrangements and items in disre-pair will be disposed of. Thank you.
Pantry Collection
The pantry collection items for the month of September are dish soap & toilet paper. Collection boxes are found at each entrance.
Shopping for your family? Why not pick up an extra one for the pantry? Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Scrip Thanks to your commitment to using Scrip for purchasing groceries, gas, household items, and dining out, this past year recorded the highest year of sales we’ve ever had! Thank You! If you haven’t tried it yet, please join us! Check out this comparison information: the local Piggly Wiggly stores provide rebates for receipts handed in that did not use Scrip as a form of payment (before tax, not including alcohol or stamp sales). Those receipts were recently totaled, and we are getting $24.20 in re-bates. If those same receipts had used Scrip to pay for those groceries, the parish would have earned $145-that’s over $120 more in earnings by using Scrip! Piggly Wiggly Scrip can be used at any Piggly Wiggly store. We do appreciate the receipts we receive and the rebates offered by our local stores!
Rosary The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. Join us Sundays in October at 7:15 am to pray the Rosary before celebrating Mass.
Polka Mass Report Income: $3,729.00 Expenses: $1,564.66 Profit: $2,164.34 The full report for the August 4 Dinner is posted on the bulletin board in back of church.
St. Ann Cares St. Ann Cares accepts $50 Scrip for Piggly Wiggly and Kwik Trip to offer to individuals or families in need. Recently, donations from St. Ann Cares were given to a well-respected community member who has fallen on some very difficult times. They are very grateful for this gift.
