Public Square Rosary Rally
At Fatima, Portugal, October 1917, Our Lady instructed that the Rosary is the solution to our earthly problems. This Octo-ber, let us again pray that America remains one nation under God. BDCCW
The ladies of Holy Spirit Church of Carterville will be hosting the fall South Vicariate gathering on Saturday, September 26, beginning at noon. All ladies of our South Vicariate parishes are invited to attend. We will be abiding by social distancing and masks protocol. The afternoon will include Catholic Trivia fun, meeting our Belleville Diocese Council of Catholic Women (BDCCW) president-elect Gina Einig, an update on our Oct. 14 virtual convention and our BDCCW Box of Joy initiative. The cost for a box lunch is 10 dollars.
Attendees are also encouraged to bring small school items, socks, hats, toiletries, or a toy to include in a Box of Joy for an overseas child. Make reservations by texting or phoning Betty Schnake at 201-2086 or Sister Phyllis Schenk at 925-5099.
National Day of Prayer and Fasting
On behalf of the Committee for Evangelization and Cateche-sis, I write call your attention to an important initiative spear-headed by Fr. John Riccardo and the ACTS XXIX apostolate in the Archdiocese of Detroit.
Inspired by the need for societal healing and personal conver-
sion of hearts, the ACTS XXIX team is calling for a National
Day of Prayer and Fasting on Thursday, September 24, 2020. This idea springs in part from the fact that President Lincoln on three occasions called the entire nation to fast and pray for God’s mercy on our land. It seems to be a propitious opportunity to call all people of good will to “ask God for what only God can do.”

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Imagine there are four houses on your street. Yours is valued at $400,000 The house next to you is valued at $300,000. The third at $200,000 and the last at $100,000. One day a buyer offers you $500,000 in cash for your house. You are delighted and you sell it. The next day you learn that the other three owners were given the same price by the same buyer. You’re dismayed. You feel a bit cheated. After all, your house is the most valuable on the block. So you call the buyer and tell him off. He responds, “Weren’t you delighted with the sale? Why are you angry now? Did I cheat you?”
That, in a nutshell, is today’s Gospel. We’re missing the point if we think this is a parable about justice and fairness. It simply is not. It’s a story about God’s generosity and how lavish he is with it.
The folks in the parable who work all day and get a good and fair wage represent the folks who are faithful to God all their lives and inherit the Kingdom when they die. The folks who work just a couple of hours and get a full day’s wage represent the folks who later in life turned away from sinful habits and patterns and reorient their lives towards God. They too, get the same reward, the Kingdom, at the end of their lives.
So we may think, “Oh, so if that’s how the game is played, I’ll do what I want until the very end and turn towards God and away from sin on my deathbed.” Again, we’re missing the point of the parable and what Jesus is trying to say to us. Jesus was trying to get across to his listeners that God is so madly in love with us, so passionate about us, that he generously tosses around forgiveness to us and to anyone who needs it. But, and this is a big but, we have to be sin-cere in our hearts and really turn away from old sinful habits and practices. God knows our heart better than anybody else, even ourselves, I dare say. We can’t fool God. It all starts from our hearts. Until we make peace with who you are, you’ll never be content with what you have and what you want out of life. I learned that the hard way. Make peace with yourself. Accept God’s generous offer of healing, forgiveness and peace. Dream new dreams. Become even bet-ter than you ever imagined. As St. Augustine said, “You have made us for yourself O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time How Things Work in the Kingdom of Heaven. This parable about kingdom living may rile us up. God is as generous to the late-comers to kingdom work as to those who labored longer and, perhaps, harder. Really? It is true. God is so generous, so loving, so good – with ways above our ways and thoughts above our thoughts (reread Isaiah).
What work will I do to help bring on the Kingdom of Heaven? How will I pour myself into Christian living without grumbling? How can I be generous to a fault like God this week?

GOSPEL MEDITATION
September 20, 2020
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
If I work for five hours, I expect to get paid for five hours. If I work for two, I expect to get paid for two. What if we worked for a company that paid everyone the same amount regardless of how long they worked? How would we feel going home with the same pay for working eight hours as my co-worker did for working only two hours? Secular wisdom would have a huge problem with this and a visit to the Labor Board would quickly pursue. But this is God’s wisdom and God’s ways.
We sometimes think that if we pray more, better, or more fervently and go over and above with the practice of our faith, God will somehow reward us and present us with some kind of merit badge. We are so wrong. Spiritual practices have only one true purpose: to deepen our love for God. In deepening our love for God, we also increase our ability to see God’s presence around us, living life more purposefully and contemplatively. What if God chooses to treat someone who has come on the scene of faith later in life the same as someone who has devoted their whole lives to it? Does it really matter? If we have the merit badge notion of faith, we can find ourselves feeling a little arrogant and even jealous of folks who have not followed the same path that we have. We can even see ourselves as the privileged few who have a corner on the faith and fully possess it.
That thinking doesn’t square with God. God is all about mercy in abundance and is ready to take anyone to himself regardless of when they come. He is only happy that they have come home and delights in their return. After all, if you really and truly love someone, does it matter what they will give you in return or what you receive as a benefit? If relationships were assessed based upon productivity, they would lack authentic love. We invest too much self interest in our prayer and neglect to see it as an op-portunity to pursue our Lover and deepen the intimate bond we have with God.
When we breathe our last, all that is of consequence is union with God. If my love for God is real, I am going to want to live the Gospel, abide by the commandments, practice my faith, forgive and love my neighbor, and care for the environment, regardless of how much time it takes or benefits me. We want God to think and behave as we do, and in doing so, we set ourselves up for disappointment. God has a totally different agenda and that’s okay. ©LPi
