“The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” - Mark 1:15

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 2 Sm 5:1-7, 10; Mk 3:22-30, or any readings from the Mass “For Peace and Justice,” nos. 887-891 Tuesday: 2 Sm 6:12b-15, 17-19; Mk 3:31-35 Wednesday: Acts 22:3-16 or Acts 9:1-22; Mk 16:15-18 Thursday: 2 Tm 1:1-8 or Ti 1:1-5; Mk 4:21-25 Friday: 2 Sm 11:1-4a, 5-10a, 13-17; Mk 4:26-34 Saturday: 2 Sm 12:1-7a, 10-17; Mk 4:35-41 Sunday: Dt 18:15-20; Ps 95; 1 Cor 7:32-35

A NEW DAY DAWNS

Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the citizens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing “by their actions” how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns. Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their everyday activities, he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live “as though” they aren’t doing the things they are doing. A new day has dawned. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their nets—and even their father—and follow him. A new day had dawned. Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the Ninevites, the Corinthians, the apostles, even Jesus! Didn’t a new day dawn today for us as well?

MEN’S WEEKEND RETREAT HOLY NAME RETREAT CENTER

“Tired of counting sheep? Come talk to the Good Shepherd! Come

and join some of your parish men and make a retreat at Holy Name Retreat Center! Come and share in a retreat on the weekend of January 28-30, 2012. Come and rest to be renewed in God’s Spirit. Call John Gajewski at 713-432-1258 for more information or call the Retreat Center at 713-464-0211.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Ordinary” is not always a desirable adjective. Who would not be insulted to receive a thank-you note for your “ordinary birthday gift,” or “the ordinary hospitality at the dinner party”? No restaurant advertises its ordinariness,” no car dealer seats a customer at the steering wheel and whispers, “Look how ordinary it is!” Yet here we are in “Ordinary Time.” The word carries a different mean-ing here: it does not mean these days are dull, boring, pedestrian, uninteresting. It means “ordinal,” or “numbered” Sundays, a sea-son of the year when we follow the story of Jesus’ life and ministry in an ordered way, with each Sunday assigned an ordinal num-ber. You can amaze your friends with this example of Catholic arithmetic: the “Ordinary Sundays” begin with the last Sunday of Christmas, the Baptism of the Lord, continue until the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, and resume after a cluster of feasts following Pentecost Sunday. The numbers are calculated by counting backwards from the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Thirty-fourth Sun-day in Ordinary Time. Now you know there is nothing “ordinary” about “Ordinary Time!”

WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE

The 16th World Day for Conse-crated Life will be observed in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston on Sunday, February 5, 2012. As you may know, our archdiocese is blessed with the ministry of approxi-mately 450 women and 220 men in

religious life. On Sunday, February 5, those in consecrated life are invited to our Diocesan celebration at the Co-Cathedral of Sacred Heart at the 11 am Mass.

GIFT What I am is God’s gift to me. What I become is my gift back to God. - Anonymous

STATION OF THE CROSS The active praying of the Stations of the Cross has been very important for the Catholic Christian community for centuries. Here at Holy Ghost, we would like to offer the praying of the Stations every Friday during Lent at 6:00pm for the English speaking. We want to invite you to join us for this time of prayer. It helps us to stay focused on the meaning of Lent lead-ing up to Holy Week and the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. We hope to see you there. Fr. Steve.

“El Reino de Dios ya está cerca. Arrepiéntanse y crean en el Evan-gelio”. - Marcos 1:15
