FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…..

From the Desk of the Pastor

Dear Parish Families, Both of our parishes have excelled from the joyful and holy work of countless men, women, boys and girls who donate their stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure. Today, I want to send out a plug for a ministry which is available to be adopted: The “Don’t Eat Alone” Dinner. St. Mark Parish has offered this ministry dinner for those who normally eat alone. (I am one of those people.) This monthly (or bi-monthly) dinner is offered to any person who has to eat alone many days of the month: people who are single, widowed, divorced, separated, or (like me) in vows. Most of our meal patrons are senior citizens who really appreciate this opportunity to eat a home-cooked meal with others. But there are also others who are not retired yet who appreciate such a kindness for companionship at dinner time. The dinner begins about 5pm on an appointed day and is usually no longer than an hour. People can even “eat and run” if necessary. For years, several women of the parish have acted as hostesses and cooks. And what a great job they have done! What love they poured into their ministry! But now the time has come to pass the baton to a new generation who will add their own twist to this ministry. As the pastor, I am taking this opportunity to personally seek out a group of four faithful parishioners (ideally two from each parish) to work as a leadership team. I will be happy to provide guidance and vision. They in turn develop a schedule of dates, menu, and design a cooking/set-up clean up team of other helpers. This would be an EXCELLENT opportunity for junior and senior high parishioners to earn meaningful service hours as they serve in a fun and creative way. I would like this dinner to serve singles from BOTH St. Mark and Mt. Calvary Parishes. This ministry can be very, very satisfying. I envision leaders serving for a few years, then passing it on – this way nobody becomes burdened. It becomes a work of the worshiping community. Please note that I am not looking for volunteers! I am looking for DISCPLES of Jesus Christ who happily will make this happen for patrons. The meals may be simple, as the best par t of this meal is the love with which it is prepared and enjoyed. If you are from EITHER PARISH and are willing to work together under the guidance of your pastor, please call or email me at [email protected]. Let’s get together and continue this fine ministry of love and service. Nothing says “love” like a wonderful meal and good people gathered in friendship. Have a wonderful week. Let me hear from you!

AROUND THE PARISH

AND OUR DIOCESE

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Today Jesus is saying to us: “Why are you idle? Go into my vineyard.” Our family is the vineyard entrusted to us found in today’s gospel. Successful families are constructed by “laborers,” who work hard on family relationships, and not by spectators who only watch from a distance. MARRIAGE MOMENTS What is fair? In marriage sometimes one partner gives more than the other (makes more money, does more chores - especially the unwanted ones, etc.) Recently I broke my arm and my husband became St. Jim to me. When has your beloved carried the bigger part of life's burdens for you? RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REQUEST Religious Education has already begun, and we are still in need of a 1st Grade Catechist and helpers for 3rd & 5th grades. Classes are on Wednesdays from 3:45 –5:00. If you can help, please call Geri.

NEW OPPORTUNITY Second Harvest Food Bank of Nw. Pa. is opening a community food pantry at Edison School and will begin food distribution on October 26, 2017. Mt. Calvary and St. Mark churches are being called upon to supply volunteers to staff this rewarding project. 15 volunteers will be needed for various tasks especially before the grand opening of the pantry.

The pantry will be located behind Edison School and will distribute food one day each month from 3:30pm until 5:30pm. Volunteers will work on pantry day to staff the pantry and assist patrons with collecting food. Also, a few days before pantry day volunteers will be needed to deliver food to the pantry and stock shelves in preparation. We are especially in need of 2+ volunteers who have pick-up trucks or use of similar vehicles needed to transport the groceries from the second harvest warehouse to the pantry. Please contact Tom Chandley at 814-455-9871 or [email protected] for full details or to sign up for this project. The first volunteers will be needed by October 12, 2018. This will be an ongoing joint project for both churches and a valuable mission for our parishes to serve our neighbors and community.

In honor of RESPECT LIFE month, St. Mark’s Religious Education Program is sponsoring

the Catholic Charities “Diaper Drive” at St. Mark and Mount Calvary Parishes

Every Sunday in October we will be collecting the following items:

diapers blankets wipes formula new bottles and pacifiers baby lotion shampoo infant clothing other baby accessories gently used maternity clothes

Collection boxes are located at the entrances of both churches

Thank you for your support! One of the many programs Catholic Charities Counseling and Adoption Services offer is free counseling and material assistance to pregnant women, or parents of very young children. Because of their continued commitment to help these families in need, their agency is holding a “Diaper Drive” to collect much needed baby supplies. The need to replenish these supplies is great because of the ongoing demand for these items.
