We will be running a Eucharistic Minister training session/refresher course in the near future for both

experienced and new volunteers. Anyone interested can leave their name

at the parish office 9949 4455.

The lesson from this week’s Gospel is this: We have to break some habits, even though that can hurt, because they keep us from the life God promised us. Our lives

can be wasted if we aren’t willing to make tough choices and let go of some things we think we need that conflict with the Gospel. Where do you start? Look at how you live daily. How do you party, date, study, treat family and friends, spend money? When you take a hard look, do you see any habits that conflict with the Gospel? If you’re not sure, ask a friend, parent, teacher, pastor, or someone who will be honest with you. If you find a sinful habit, then ask for God’s strength to “cut it off.” It will be hard at first. But you’ll be thankful in the long run.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, September 27th 2015

to mark Social Justice Sunday 2015, the Australian Bishop’s call to each of us is that ‘Justice for Refugees and Asylum Seekers’ should become a priority in our country. It is a stark document that describes the global movement of peoples in terms of the hardship endured and the huge number involved as over 60 million individuals are displaced because of persecution, conflict, famine or civil war.

“Australia’s response to asylum seekers and refugees has been marked by vitriolic political debate at every federal election campaign since 2001. As ever tougher deterrence measures have been introduced, our nation has retreated from its obligation to protect the fundamental right of those in fear of their lives to seek asylum. Australia is forgetting its proud tradition of welcoming the stranger. As a nation we are at risk of becoming indifferent”. [p.15]

The Bishop’s statement is available in the foyer of both our churches and more can be provided by contacting the Office during working hours. It inspires admiration at the efforts of so many who attempt to make a start in a new country in the face of such insurmountable odds. Their courage and dignity in demanding that they be recognised as equal to all the rest of the human race who walk this earth provides a real challenge to our comfortable suburban existence.

“People who come to Australia claiming protection are not aliens, but our brothers and sisters. If they cannot find protection in their own countries, they are entitled to claim it from other nations, including ours”. [p.7]

The document offers some practical steps that can be taken by individuals (and our parish community at large) in response to this crisis. Our diocese and the Vatican itself have opened its doors to welcome families into properties that are generously being made available. While this may not be possible at North Harbour – though perhaps you might convince me otherwise? – we can make sure that we educate ourselves on the issues as we take seriously our shared responsibilities.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

‘Anyone who is an obstacle to those who have faith….’ Mark 9:42

At school: Do I encourage my friends to be kind to others or do I bully too? At work or study: The temptation to laugh at Christians or people who do good is…? In my family life: Do we allow time to build each other’s faith or do we rubbish it?

Prayer this week? God, why would we want to deny you and make

it difficult for others to hope in you. Are we really that shallow or can we love like

you? Increase our faith, God of joy. Amen‘

From St. Augustine Be a protecting God for me. I will not be saved unless it is in You. Unless You were my rest, my

sickness would not be healed. Commentary on Psalm 70(1), 5
