Brothers and Sisters:

The question that Jesus asked his disciples last week, who do you say I am? Who are you for me, what difference do you, Jesus Christ, make in my life? These are some of the fundamental questions of life, and at some point we need to give an answer to them. Perhaps today we are not sure how we can answer that question sincerely, concretely, and if we cannot, do not be afraid. God is coming to help us this week with the announcement of the Good News of salvation! In our parish a catechesis, a mission, a series of meetings will begin on Monday, September 24th at 8 PM in the auditorium.

This announcement of Good News helps to cultivate adult faith in those seeking to answer this question from last week or other difficult questions in life. It is addressing those in the parish who might be “looking for more.” These talks are brought to the parish by a team of catechists of the Neocatechumenal Way from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Ridgewood, NJ. These catechists: three couples and two college students had their lives change when they heard this catechesis many years ago and they feel moved to bring it to us. They do this despite the personal sacrifice to them and their families, and at no cost to the parish. Imagine that in today’s world. Blessed Pope John Paul II called this experience in the Church “an itinerary of Catholic formation valid for our society and our times.” The Lord is telling us this week that we need to be childlike, simple and open, not always working to be number One, like the apostles were doing. The Lord calls us to be the last one and the servant of all. He puts a child in our midst to remind us of what it means to have an adult faith, a strong faith that answers the difficult questions of our time. Brothers and sisters, I trust that you see the need for this adult faith in our parish and that you will respond to God’s invitation. We hope all of you will also join us for the 140th Anniversary picnic and the carnival, of course. Please pray to St. Claire for good weather and offer her a prayer and a small sacrifice; she will not let us down!!

PARISH OUTDOOR MASS-PICNIC September 30, 2012 CARNIVAL September 28-29-30, 2012 Our parish outdoor mass, picnic and carnival is fast approaching at the end of September. Please take a moment to fill in the RSVP slips that are left in the pews to let us know if you are planning on attending the outdoor mass and picnic on September 30 and how many people you anticipate bringing. These slips will be in the pews for the last weekend. You can drop them in the collection basket or at the gift card table. We are looking for volunteers to staff the game booths and help with set-up and clean-up. If you are interested, there are forms in the pews to sign up as well as a master sign-up list at the back of the church. This is a great opportunity for the students to also get their service hours completed. Your donation of time to this event will ensure its success. Thanks in advance for all your help!!

140th Anniversary Outdoor Picnic Some parishioners have asked about making a donation to cover some of the expenses of the picnic; of course, this would be most welcome. Picnic expenses are: food costs, entertainment, desserts, etc. A small or large donation would help us a lot!

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The wicked say: With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test (Wisdom 2:12, 17-20). Psalm — The Lord upholds my life (Psalm 54). Second Reading — The wisdom from above is full of mercy and good fruits (James 3:16 — 4:3). Gospel — Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me (Mark 9:30-37).

St. VINCENT DE PAUL Saint of the Week

The deathbed confession of a dying servant opened Vincent's eyes to the crying spiritual needs of the peasantry of France. This seems to have been a crucial moment in the life of the man from a small farm in Gascony, France, who had become a priest with little more ambition than to have a comfortable life. It was the Countess de Gondi (whose servant he had helped) who persuaded her husband to endow and support a group of able and zealous missionaries who would work among poor tenant farmers and country people in general. Vincent was too humble to accept leadership at first, but after working for some time in Paris among imprisoned galley-slaves, he returned to be the leader of what is now known as the Congregation of the Mission, or the Vincentians. Later, Vincent established confraternities of charity for the spiritual and physical relief of the poor and sick of each parish. From these, with the help of St. Louise de Marillac, came the Daughters of Charity, "whose convent is the sickroom, whose chapel is the parish church, whose cloister is the streets of the city." He organized the rich women of Paris to collect funds for his missionary projects, founded several hospitals, collected relief funds for the victims of war and ransomed over 1,200 galley slaves from North Africa. Pope Leo XIII made him the patron of all charitable societies. Outstanding among these, of course, is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, founded in 1833 by his admirer Blessed Frédéric Ozanam (September 7).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

On the Byzantine calendar, September 23 is the feast of the Conception of John the Baptist. The Roman and Byzantine calendars have in common the other equinox- or solstice-derived dates of solemnities: December 25, March 25, and June 24. Scholars see strong evidence in the writings of the early Church Fathers for the fixing of these dates from the imagined “anniversary” of Gabriel’s appearance to Zechariah at Yom Kippur, which was thought to have coincided with the equinox as a day of “at-one-ment” between light and darkness. The spiritual writer Origen held to this date. The annunciation to Zechariah then set the date six months later for Mary’s conception of Jesus (March 25), and then, of course, for the dates of the births of John (June 24) and Jesus (December 25). Is this “liturgical trivia?” Perhaps. But it’s also the best explanation we have for the dating of some of the most important festivals on our calendar. So even though the Roman Church doesn’t observe the Conception of John the Baptist, yesterday’s equinox can remind us of how our salvation history is closely attuned to God’s creation.

NEWLY RENOVATED LAMPS The hanging lamps in the church have all been

rewired and repainted and new glass has replaced the old, yellow ones. In addition new energy

efficient lights are being used and our electric bill in May was $306; in the fall it was usually around

$900. The work was done by two men who charged us very little for their labor. If a company had done this work it would have been $2,000 per

light, at least. Two larger lamps have been sponsored by a generous parishioner for $500 each. We are very grateful to him. The smaller

lamps can be sponsored for $150 each. Thank you for your generosity!

40 DAYS OF LIFE From September 26th through November 4th, you are invited to join other Christians for 40 days of life– 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You are also invited to actively participate by peacefully praying during a 40 day vigil outside the Women’s Choice Abortion Clinic, 10 Zabriskie Street, Hackensack. We pray for babies, their moms as well as God’s protection of all human life. If you’d like more information or would like to volunteer, please contact Margaret at 201-805-0937 or Linda at 551-265-8121

THE MEANING OF DISCIPLESHIP The geography of today’s Gospel is significant. Jesus is completing his ministry in Galilee and beginning his journey to Jerusalem, where he will meet both death and resurrection. The prediction of his death placed here is the second of three in Mark’s Gospel, and as usual it is the occasion for an important teaching on the part of Jesus. Today that lesson is tied to the need for his disciples to embrace a ministry of service. A play on words in Aramaic would have linked the words “child” and “servant,” thus turning Jesus’ gesture of placing a child in their midst into an illustration of his understanding of himself as the Servant of the Lord. It is that same awareness of the meaning of their ministry that Jesus (and Mark) wishes to instill in the disciples. Theirs must be a ministry of service if they are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. And that service might even require of them that they be “handed over” to death. What would have been—in the culture of Jesus’ day—an ordinary discussion of social status (“who is the greatest”) becomes in Mark’s context a key insight into the meaning of discipleship for the disciples and for us.

NEW KEYS COMING The school and church had new keys made last week. Those who have one can turn the old one in and request a new one. There will be a short list of new keys distributed so we can more easily control access to the buildings.
