In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples: “Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all.” When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you give hope to your

neighbors who have nothing. If you or someone you know is having a hard time financially and could use some help, we might be able to assist you/them. Please call us at 312-608-6517.

Upcoming Feast Days

On Monday October18th, the Church celebrates the feast day of St. Luke, Evangelist. His Gospel message of the good news talks about God’s kingdom that is based on love. Everyone is invited into it, especially the marginalized, poor and forgotten. The Gospel according to St. Luke demonstrates beautifully that each one of us, despite our social status, is very important in the eyes of our Heavenly Father. St. Luke was a Syrian physician from Antioch and his education and experience certainly has an influence on his Gospel. He is a patron

saint of the medical profession, painters, artists, sculptors and butchers. St. Luke is the author of the Acts of the Apostles that talks about the beginning of the Church. If you never read that part of the Bible, I strongly recommend doing it. You will be amazed by how the first Christians acted with love and charity. We should all get back to the roots of the Christianity and make the law of love a priority of our lives.

On Friday, October 22nd, we will celebrate the memorial of St. John Paul II. This

contemporary saint is close to our hearts. You can learn about this holy man from different publications on the Internet. I would like to include here the Collect prayer made for the feast day of St. John Paul II:

O God, rich in mercy,

who willed that Pope Saint John Paul the Second should preside over your universal church,

grant, we pray, that instructed by his teaching, we may confidently open our hearts to the saving grace of Christ,

the sole Redeemer of the human race. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Saint Luke and Saint John Paul II – pray for us!

THE CALL TO PRAYER Let us pause to take time out for a few minutes of prayer. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to: Mark James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” He replied, “What do you wish me to do for you?” They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But, it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Reflection Question: Jesus tells the disciples, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” Who is a model of Christian servanthood in your life? Group Discussion or Meditation: Say the Our Father Concluding Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, grant that we may always conform our will to yours and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

We are beginning to work on our annual Giving Tree. This year we will continue to use SignUpGenius, which is an online site on which you can select a family, see their needs, and make their holidays happier by giving them a Christmas gift. This site will be open on 10/31.

As in the past, monetary donations can be made either at the rectory or in the weekly collection basket (in an envelope marked GIVING TREE) and the shopping will be done by one of our volunteers. For those who would like to donate online, you will be able to contribute using Give Central starting 10/31. More information can be found in future bulletins. Questions at this time, please contact Mary Mondt at 773-576-8445. Thank you for your support!

POWER OF PRAYER Another example of the power of prayer

Three years ago my niece Rachel Dusek was diagnosed with Leukemia. She was only 22 years old at the time. I placed her name in our pray for the sick. She has had so many chemo treatments, epidural steroid injections, bone marrow tests and several medications. She has been so strong and courageous in handling her situation. I am so proud of her. She just had her last bone marrow test and her doctor called with the results that she is cancer free!! A huge thank you to all those who have prayed for Rachel these last three years. Prayers do work miracles Alice Dusek

Next weekend, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis tells us, “Once we experience the power of God’s love, and recognize his presence in our personal and community life, we cannot help but proclaim and share what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20) World Mission Sunday is one way to proclaim and share the Good News with our most vulnerable brothers and sisters around the world. Please be generous in the collection to support over 1,000 mission dioceses. Remember to pray for our family of faith especially during this global pandemic. Place your donation in the collection basket or you can make a donation online at WeAreMissionary.org/wms.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY “We cannot help but speak about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20) On October 24, we join with the Universal Church to celebrate World Mission Sunday. As the global pandemic continues to cause suffering and loss both at home and around the world, we as sisters and brothers in faith pause to pray and be in solidarity with our neighbors a world away. Through this celebration we actively participate in the mission of Jesus Christ to “go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15) The annual World Mission Sunday collection provides critical financial support to missionaries and communities of faith in the most economically disadvantaged regions of the globe. Working with limited means, these local churches bear witness to the Gospel amid scarcity, conflict and instability. The Church’s missionaries address all forms of material and spiritual needs to build up the church, affirm human dignity, alleviate poverty, encourage dialogue and inspire hope. The World Mission Sunday collection provides: • Approximately 75 percent to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which helps sustain over 1,000 mission dioceses in Africa, Asia and remote areas of Latin America and the Pacific Islands. • About 9 percent for the Catholic Near East Welfare Association to alleviate poverty, foster Christian unity and promote interreligious dialogue in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe. • About 15 percent to the basic operations of the Global Mission Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago, which facilitates,

resources, and supports efforts to reach out in love and solidarity globally. In his message for World Mission Sunday Pope Francis says, “As Christians, we cannot keep the Lord to ourselves: the Church’s evangelizing mission finds outward fulfilment in the transformation of our world and in the care of creation.” Let our celebration reinvigorate us to continue to walk with one another in this ongoing pandemic and transform our world with Christ’s compassion. If you are able, place a donation to support mission dioceses it in the collection basket, or you can make a donation online at WeAreMissionary.org/wms.

November 14 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the death of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. The Archdiocese of Chicago is sponsoring two events to commemorate this beloved and esteemed archbishop. On November 1, 2021 at 7 p.m. at Holy Name Cathedral, there will be a commemoration of Cardinal Bernardin’s contribution to the Church and our civic life. The evening is entitled “Now More Than Ever: The Enduring Prophetic Voice and Legacy of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Twenty-five Years after His Death.” Five speakers will briefly address aspects of his legacy and its continuing relevance in today’s world. On November 2, 2021, the annual Mass remembering deceased bishops and priests of the Archdiocese will be celebrated at Holy Name Cathedral at 12 p.m.. A special remembrance of Cardinal Bernardin will be included in that Mass.

Attention all women of the parish! The Women’s Club will hold it’s October meeting with a Halloween theme on Wednesday, October 20th in Brennan Hall. The doors open at 6:30 PM Refreshments will be served.

Covid as well as other diseases have taken countless lives. The road is narrow to get into heaven. You might have to stop in Purgatory. One of The Blessed Mother promises is she will deliver you from Purgatory when you pray the Rosary. It gets multiplied in a group. Oct is devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary. Please join us before Sunday Mass (30mins before). You don't need Rosary beads just follow the prayers being said. Pray for your family, friends, priests, and yourself etc. Excerpt from my book are available at Amazon or contact Gus Vertiz, 773-742-7700 or [email protected].

Modlitwa Jana Pawła II za Ojczyznę. Zawierzam macierzyńskiej opie-ce Pani Jasnogórskiej siebie samego, Kościół, wszystkich moich roda-ków, nie wyłączając nikogo. Zawie-rzam Jej każde polskie serce, każ-dy dom i każdą rodzinę. Wszyscy jesteśmy Jej dziećmi. Niech Maryja będzie przykładem i przewodniczką w naszej codzien-nej i szarej pracy. Niech wszystkim pomaga wzrastać w miłości Boga i miłości ludzi, budować wspólne dobro Ojczyzny, wprowadzać i umacniać sprawie-dliwy pokój w naszych sercach i środowiskach. Proszę Cię, Pani Jasnogórska, Matko i Królowo Polski, abyś cały mój naród ogarnęła Twoim macierzyńskim sercem. Dodawaj mu odwagi i siły ducha, aby mógł sprostać wielkiej odpowiedzialności, jaka przed nim stoi. Niech z wiarą, nadzieją i miłością kroczy w trzecim tysiącleciu chrześcijaństwa i jeszcze mocniej przylgnie do Twojego Syna Jezusa Chrystusa i do Jego Kościoła zbudowanego na fundamencie apostołów.

go. 1 września 1939 r. hitlerowskie Niemcy zaatakowały Polskę. Ogłosił błogo-sławionymi 1267 osób, a ponad 450 kanonizował.

W dniu 27 kwietnia 2014, Ojciec Św. Franciszek włączył Bł. Jana Pawła II w poczet świętych.
