Words of Wisdom from Pope Francis Let us pray together today for vocations, asking the
Lord for the gift of good workers for His Kingdom, whose hearts and hands are open to His love.
Let us pray together for the many pastors who give their lives for the faithful. I think often of priests, as well as other pastors who care for the good of the people: doctors. May the example of these shepherds, priests and doctors help us care for the holy, faithful people of God.
A crisis is the moment to make a choice. This pandemic is a time of social crisis. How should we react? With perseverance, silence, and fidelity to God and decisions made earlier. A moment of crisis is like passing through fire to become stronger.
Let us pray together for government leaders who are responsible for taking care of their people. May the Lord grant them strength and teach them that they need to show great unity in moments of crisis for the good of the people, because unity is superior to conflict.

My dear parishioners,
To mask or not to mask . . . to isolate or not to isolate . . . to distance or not to distance. Intended for health safety, today's policies have become sources of controversy. Reminds me of William Shakespeare's play and the soliloquy spoken by Hamlet:
A question that arose out of his contemplation of life or death.
In the context of the coronavirus, we are asked to be responsible (not to be irresponsible) . . . to be mindful of others well-being (not to be concerned only about ourselves) . . . to be careful about physical gatherings (not to be careless or reckless) . . . to be attentive to the proofs of science and medicine (not to be disregarding what is for our good).
As people of faith, and like Hamlet, we contemplate life and death. While this present life calls us to be in a loving relationship with God, it also provides ample opportunity to be aware that death will one day call us to be with God in glory.
The how and the when of our death is unknown to us. What is known is the now. It is the present for which we are responsible. To be women and men of faith. To be women and men of hope. To be women and men of love. That is who we are called to be.
My brothers and sisters, in the context of who we are called to be as followers of Jesus Christ, I urge you to be patient . . . to be kind . . . to be generous . . . to be compassionate . . . to be understanding . . . to be a believer in the power of life over death.

Lighting Vigil Candles: If you would like to have a vigil candle(s) lit in one of the churches of our parish grouping, you may mail that request to the parish office. Please include your name, the intention, the name of the church in which you want the
candle lit, and the $3.00 donation for each candle. The candles will be lit in the church of your choosing: Saint Francis of Assisi in Harmar, Saint Edward in Blawnox, Saint Scholastica in Aspinwall, Madonna of Jerusalem in Sharpsburg, Saint Mary in Sharpsburg, or Saint Joseph in O'Hara.
Daily Mass Intentions: During these days of church closures the three priests of the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes continue to offer Mass each day in the churches where they live. Father Dale DeNinno in Saint

On this Mother's Day, I hope that all mothers will receive the honor and thanks that is due them. They are the heroes among us. With tireless energy they show constancy of love for their children, both young and those grown to adulthood. May the Lord bless them and may Mary, our Blessed Mother, pray for them.
A Message from Mrs. Delia Barr: This week we would be having our last classes for the year. Like you I never thought I would be quarantined and off work this long. But, here we are and I pray we are all making the best of this time we have at home. You are truly in my prayers. My faith
life like yours has dramatically changed. I used to have the blessing of attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist daily. I have had to find new ways to stay close to the Lord. I have found I can attend daily Mass by watching on TV or online. On my walks I often listen to the rosary. Now that we are entering the Month of May I plan to make that a daily ritual. I think I have here at home one of the rosaries we made in October at our family program. I encourage you to find those rosaries and pray the rosary during May. I close with the Sub Tuum Praesidium, the oldest known hymn to Our Lady, so fitting for our day:
Beneath your compassion,
We take refuge, O Theotokos [God-bearer]:
do not despise our petitions in time of trouble:
but rescue us from dangers,
only pure, only blessed one.

Some thoughts from Father Michael on Step 4.
Step 4 – “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves”
During this time of solitude, when we are forced to be alone with ourselves, we will probably need to confront some of our regrets, resentments, guilt and even shame. As these emotions surface, we can find ourselves feeling very isolated as we confront those things about ourselves that we keep locked up deep inside our heart. As we confront these difficult and at times painful realities about ourselves, it is important that we seek the grace to embrace ourselves as we are, with all our blessings, brokenness, gifts and challenges. It is important that we invite and welcome God into our personal mystery.
In really seeing ourselves as we are and taking responsibility for who we are, we really are doing a fourth step. We are indeed making a searching and fearless moral inventory. Perhaps not deliberately, but nonetheless doing it, and this can be one of the graces we experience in the midst of this pandemic.
I would offer a suggestion as we confront our own reality and that is do a journal. To write down your thoughts, fears, hopes, experiences, regrets and resentments. It has been my experience as I write them down, they become less ambiguous and more tangible and manageable. We can look and accept our own life as it is, seeing God’s abiding and loving presence in each and every moment and experience and struggle in life.
I believe that this is prayer; being brutally honest, accepting our truth, and embracing the invitation and challenge to growth and change.
A moral inventory is not a self-flagellation, but rather an opportunity to see God’s presence, loving us in our very brokenness, inviting us to grow always more authentic and honest as we journey on the path to growth and change.

In order to adapt to the social restrictions warranted by the Covid-19 virus, we will be instituting a weekly reflection given by Father Michael Decewicz on the 12 Steps, 12 Traditions and 12 Promises every Monday at 10:00 a.m. starting on Monday, May 18. We will also be initiating monthly video mini-leads, grief reflections and guest speakers. All of these will be available for viewing on our website, which is addictionrecoveryministrypittsburgh.org.
A Facebook live video will also be shared on each Monday on our Facebook page, Addiction Recovery Ministry Pittsburgh. In addition, there is a phone line for those who need to speak to someone: 412-218-5410.

for Peace of Mind and Heart
Eternal, Holy God,
I come to you burdened
with worries, fears, doubts and troubles.

In Time of Pandemic
O Mary, you always brighten our path
as a sign of salvation and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you,
health of the sick,
who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus' pain
while remaining steadfast in faith.
loving Mother, you know what we need,
and we are confident you will provide for us
as at Cana in Galilee.
Intercede for us with your Son Jesus,
the Divine Physician,
for those who have fallen ill,
for those who are vulnerable,
and for those who have died.
Intercede also for those charged with
protecting the health and safety of others
and for those who are tending to the sick
and seeking a cure.
Help us, O Mother of Divine Love,
to conform to the will of the Father
and to do as we are told by Jesus,
who took upon himself our
sufferings and carried our sorrows,
so as to lead us, through the Cross,

Heavenly Father,

for their intuition and encouragement,

Keep, strengthen, and refresh them
in your loving care.
May they be blessed by our open-hearted
love and gratitude.

Blessing of Mothers
During the season of Easter, what a great time to remember our mothers and ask for God's blessing on them. It is God who ultimately gave us life. It is through God's unselfish love--mirrored in our mothers' willingness to associate their love with God's and take the risk to love us into life--that we have the opportunity for life. We remember our mothers this Mother's Day with much love. Let us pray for each of them:
God our heavenly Father,
you give to each the ability
to share your generative love.
Bless those women in our lives
who mirror your love
and bring forth life through their willingness
to risk bringing new life into this world.
Help us to show them our gratitude
for the gift of life
and the gift of a mother's love.
May our life-giving God continue to bless them
and show them his unfailing love.
We ask this through Jesus,
God's Son and our brother.
