Leadership Summit May 30-31 Family Church, Servant Church, Deep Church

In many of Paul’s letters, he has to rebuke, argue, and teach. But in his letter to the Philippians, he simply gives thanks: "I thank my God every time I remember you." This congregation is beginning to experience some pressure, and he writes to encourage and assure them. He wants to tell them that their work is not finished, that "he who be-

gan a good work in you will carry it forward to completion." As he goes through the letter, Paul describes what that good work looks like that God has been doing in the congregation at Philippi.

It's a good habit to identify why we do church: what was the good work that was started, and what does it look like for that work to be carried to completion?

That question takes us back to the mission statement of The United Methodist Church: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. In some churches you'll hear it put a little differently, but at its heart it's the same thing. We exist to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

What does this mean? When we say "making disciples," we don't just mean converting people. Conversion is only one step on a very long road of discipleship. Imagine a picture, and at the center is God. And we are the little dots all around God. Some dots are close, others are further away, but each person God created has a place somewhere in this picture. Here's what discipleship is about: all of these dots are moving. Some are moving in, some are moving out, some are just orbiting. Discipleship is the path we take when we intentionally decide to start moving toward God.

Now, we have to remember a couple of things. The first is that along that path, we will pass several important road markers. One is when we give our hearts to Jesus for the first time, one is when we join a community of faith and accept the responsibility that comes with church membership, one is when we find our ministry and plug into the job God has given us. But "making disciples" cannot be reduced to any one of those moments. Making disciples refers to helping people move along the path toward God, wher-ever they may have started from.

The second thing we have to remember is that the very nature of discipleship is such that the closer you get to God, the more you become like God. If our church is making disciples, then the people who are a part of our church should look more like God this year than they did last year. If our church is making disciples, then the people of our church should be more generous, kinder, more courageous, more prudent, and wiser than we were last year. It also means that if there are people who have been in church fifty years and still have a problem with gossip, prejudice, arrogance, or greed, the church has failed in its mission. If there are peo-ple who can come to church for forty years and still not look any more like Jesus than they did when they started, that's a failure of the church. The entire reason we exist is to help people look like Jesus by moving further along in their path of discipleship, making disciples of Jesus Christ.

The statement finishes with the phrase, "for the transformation of the world." That simply means we're Methodist. Our Method-ist identity is the marriage of personal holiness and social holiness. Personal holiness is that we care what goes on inside our souls, and whether or not we are looking more like Jesus. Social holiness means we care what goes on in our world, and whether it looks like the kingdom of God. Making disciples is not just so we can feel better about ourselves; it is so we can be agents of trans-formation in the world. It is so that we can be useful to God in helping his kingdom come and his will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

That's why we're here. The second question is this: how do we do that? If our goal is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, how are we going about that?

We do that by creating three primary emphases: Family Church, Servant Church, and Deep Church. These are not simply catchy words. They are actually drawn from ancient Christian theology about church. (Continued on Page 2)

This is a very exciting and crucial time in the life of Cave Spring United Methodist Church!

As your Lay Leader, I see a decline in attendance on Sundays. And I worry that this could lead to a decline in the missions of our church. I know we are all pulled in many different directions these days. I also know that if we choose to do other things and not support our church, we could all lose. We all need to focus on worship and service to our God, because without that there is a void in our lives.

Our Church Council has the task of setting the course this church is to take over the next several years in programs and initiatives. We do good, even great work here al-ready! We need to now define where we are headed and what our purpose as a church is going to be in the years ahead. Remember, “I am the church -- we are the church -- TOGETHER.”

I ask YOU to take on the task of praying for your church in a very specific manner. I want us to all take time to pray, reflect, and vision for our future together. It is the task of each member to help the Council decide.

I am praying that you will invest a half hour of your time for the future of your church, and the future of your family by participat-ing; it will impact your life and the life of your church.

Family Church are ministries that invite the families of Cave Spring into the family of God. It is any ministry organized for the purpose of bringing people together, eating together, laughing together, being together.

Servant Church are ministries that reach out of our doors to the community. It is our effort to move off and away from this hill into the places, spaces, and lives of people around us. Servant Church is important because it keeps us honest, and useful. It keeps us from being closed in on ourselves, from being absorbed with our own problems, and from be-coming irrelevant. And it keeps us from becoming spiritually useless.

At Cave Spring United Methodist, Deep Church is where we proclaim the word in song, study, worship, and Communion. This is where we learn with our heads and our hearts what the Gospel actually is. This is where we study what it looks like to be a follower of Christ, where we pray about what it means for us to be a follower of Christ, and where we sit in the grace of God and let that still, small voice whisper to us. Deep Church happens in worship, Bible Study, Sunday school, choir, and a thousand other varied and different ways.

It’s time to be clear about our purpose.

On May 30 & 31 your church leaders will gather for a retreat called a Leadership Summit. It’s our beginning moment, for the process to help us live OUR church mission statement. I ask that you pray for those who agree to be a part of this Summit process that will carry us into the remainder of the year. Its decisions will be with us into the future.

My prayer is that by this time next year, OUR church would take its mission to make disciples so seriously that the change would be tangible. My prayer is that by this time next year, WE will all be able to look at that imagined picture and say, "By the grace of God, I have moved one step closer to God this year." And I know my prayer is not in vain. Because the God who began a good work in you will not leave you abandoned, but will bring you to the day of completion.

Where you normally worship- will be jumping, singing, yelling children. Where you normally have a fellowship meal or perhaps your Sunday School class- will be experimenting, snacking, running children. In hallways, where you normally chat with friends in passing- will be loosely formed “lines” of children walking like elephants or ducks or secret agents as they move from station to station. Where we just took family pictures in front of the Resurrection Cross- will be children SLIMEING their pastors after raising money for Stop Hunger Now.

Vacation Bible School is coming and there will be nothing NORMAL about it!!!

This year’s VBS theme is “Weird Animals: Where Jesus’ Love is One of a Kind!!” As always- it will have amazing music, bright and fun Bible Buddies, lively Bible stories, and life changing experiences for the kids of our church and our com-munity. But, this event depends on ALL OF YOU!! We need so much help to make this COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENT be successful!!!

CSUMC Weekday School News

Our preschool friends have been very busy practic-ing for their Spring Program. Please join us in the sanctuary on Wednesday May 14 at 10:30 AM to hear them sing!

Camperships Needed for Community Outreach Program (COP)

Donations are being collected through May 25 to help the inner-city children of the Community Outreach Program held at Trinity UMC attend a session of summer camp at Alta Mons. The cost to send a child to camp is $145.00/week. Use an envelope from the tent in our Wel-come Center for your donation; please make checks paya-ble to CSUMC, marked “Camp Scholarship.” Items needed for camp kits include: bath size towels, small tooth pastes and brushes, small bars of soap, teen size sleeping bags, flash lights, Bibles.
