CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

It is with some excitement that I welcome you to "The Complete Works ofWilliam Shakespeare (abridged)". This very, very funny play marks a welcome return to comedy at The Playhouse and really exposes the rich talents of director, castand crew "employed" on this production. Having listened in at one of the very earlyrehearsals, I was splitting my sides with laughter. Penny and Co. - you have alldone a mqrvellous job.

You will have noticed the fence which has been erected on the east side ofthe theatre, and I am afraid that parking is going to be a problem in the near future.Peter Phillips, our Theatre Management Committee Chairman, has been busy in negotiations with our landlord, the Cayman Islands Government and, although a solution may be worked out, there will be some inconvenience over the next year to ourpatrons. We will keep you informed.

It has been a very busy season here and, instead of going into hibernation thissummer, we will be presenting a "Fun and Food" offering in August, with JohnChapman's hilarious comedy "Key for Two". Wait for more details. At the time ofwriting this message, there is a small female part still not cast and, if you want toprevent the director doing another appearance in drag, do give him a call (it's me).September, it's the Kiwanis with Paul de Freitas' two local plays, and then intoauditions for "The Wizard ofOz" playing in January 2000. Already we have two orthree plays being slotted in for the Millennium. Theatre is very much alive here.And don't forget the Haunted House (National Trust) in OctoberlNovember, and ourown Christmas Winter Wonderland.

We had a really fun Club Night with some of our members showing off theirtalent (with one member showing off more than that!!!) and a delightful quiz. Welldone to Linda and her gang. What a pity more of you didn't show - and it wasFREE!

I had better stop now or Penny will be giving me a bad time. AGAIN!! Sitback, laugh and applaud loud. Try and wake the Bard out of his sleep.

Now that the play is over, how about relaxing in a friendly,

comfortable lounge at.mosphere with a late night menu'?

A Word (or Two) from the Director

In 1996, prior to making a summer trip to England, I decided to check on the internet to see whatplays were going to be on in London whilst I was there. One play in particular caught my eye, as I had recently seen an article about it in an English newspaper - The Complete Works of William Shakespeare(abridged). I duly contacted the theatre booking office and obtained tickets for the first night of my holiday inthe U.K.

Well, it is probably obvious - by the fact that you are here to see the show - that I was hooked rightfrom the start. Three lunatic Americans (or so they appeared) tearing down the revered Bard into slapstickcomedy might not appeal to the purists among us, but they certainly hit my funny-bone. Still gasping forbreath and crying with laughter, I left the theatre that night not quite sure what had hit me. In my ten day stayin London, I managed to see the show five times. Not only that, but in 1998 I managed to make a sixth trip tothe Criterion to see it again, this time in the company of Peter, my long-suffering husband. The way I lookedat it was, if I was ever going to put this play on in Grand Cayman, I would need a stage manager who alsoknew the play. As you can see, it worked!

For several months I searched high and low to find out if it was available for amateur performance. Assoon as I found that Warner/Chappell Plays Ltd. could issue a licence, I wasted no more time. Auditions wereheld at the end of March, and my wonderful actors - Malcobn, Chris and Dan - started the daunting task ofrehearsals. We have worked up to four nights a week (after hectic days in our real jobs) to bring you our version of this hilariously funny work; and we certainly couldn't have done it without our Producer/Assistant Director, Sue Howe. She has been an absolute brick - taking rehearsals for me when I had other commitments,running around selling advertisements in the programme, and generally helping to keep me sane.

Directing this play hasn't been as easy as I had at first thought. What use is a director who is continually doubled up with laughter? But the natural comedic timing of our three stars left me with very little to do.They understood right from the word go just what was required of them, and I have had more fun putting thisplay together than any other I have ever done.

I would like to say some very special "thank you's":

• to my stage manager and better half for all his help, ideas and suggestions, and for putting up with mewhen things weren't going quite as well as I would have liked;

• to Sue for all the time and effort she has put into this production, even when her mother was visiting andshe had to leave both mother and baby whilst attending rehearsals;

• to Fay Anne de Freitas for not even turning a hair when I threw a pile of patterns and fabric at her;• to all my "props persons" who have, during the past three weeks, attended almost as many rehearsals as

the actors;• to Chris, Dan and Malcolm for their hard work and cheerful natures, both of which have made my life so

much easier;• to all those who have helped and who I have probably forgotten to thank, and who will never speak to me

agam;• and last, but certainly not least, to you - our audience - for your support.

Enjoy the show!Penny Phillips

MALCOLM ELLIS

Malcolm moved to Cayman from Canada on a governmenttax evasion grant. His bizarre behaviour blended well withthe local eccentrics in the Cayman Drama Society and thushe has avoided prosecution. He hopes to pursue his goals asan amateur homswoggler. His hobbies are stamp-licking,Marmite sandwiches and light bondage.

CHRIS MANNHaving made such an early critical impact with his debutat the Old Vic Theatre playing opposite Sir Larry as apiece of lichen, Chris turned his back on fame and fortuneand spent the next nine years touring the Far East in an attempt to find his "muse", whilst playing such diverseroles as Othello's codpiece and the figurehead in HMSPinafore. He has now been lurking in the mangroves inCayman for the past several years, where KennethBranagh said he was impressed by the breadth of hisHamlet.

DAN MORISSEAU

Born in the far west of Canada, some time ago: Dan wasraised by a group of mountain goats. He is no stranger tothrill, excitement and danger. Previous to his career as aShakespearian actor, Dan was a karaoke slut. Feeling heneeds a change, Dan has decided to go back to writing.Look for him in the Compass as "Name Withheld by Re..quest".

About the REAL Reduced Shakespeare Company...

&rhe Reduced Shakespeare Company came into existence in San Francisco in 1981 whenthe collective brain of its founding members short-circuited and began spewing out BugsBunny cartoons in iambic pentameter. In those early days, the three-man company livedon handouts from confused members of the public who were accosted by them in the

streets, alleys and swampland of Northern California. The boys decided to go to Britain in 1987because "we heard there was really good surfing." The surfing rumours turned out to be a lie andthe company has been trying to raise the money to return to the United States ever since.

For the n~xt nine years, the R.S.C. wandered aimlessly around the globe, from country tocountry, venue to venue. There have been rumoured sightings at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Lincoln Center in New York, and Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival. Reportshave also come in from such far-flung and exotic locales as Singapore, Canada, Japan, HongKong, Hawaii, and Milton Keynes. Finally, in March of 1996, the company began performing atthe Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus, London. The police were called to the scene but wereunable to remove the boys from the premises.

These three cultural guerrillas (described by one critic as "whoopee cushions with legs~)

are now in their fourth year at the Criterion Theatre in London's West End. The Complete Worksof William Shakespeare (abridged) was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 1997.The script of the show was written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, with additional material by Reed Martin, and is published by Applause Books of New York.
