The Cell Theory

The cell theory has 3 major tenets:

1. All living things are composed of one or more

cells.

2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in

living things.

3. New cells are produced from existing cells.

The ability of cells to divide to form new cells is the basis

for all reproduction (both sexual and asexual) and for the

growth and repair of all multicellular organisms.

Unicellular vs. Multicellular

It is the LOWEST LEVEL of structure capable of life.

Don’t forget: Unicellular organisms are made up of one cell only

Multicellular organisms are made up of many cell, like us!

2 Main Types of Cells

Both main types of cells contain cell membrane, DNA,

cytoplasm, and ribosomes.

1. Prokaryotic Cells

Do not have a true nucleus

So, the cell’s DNA is not completely separated from

the rest of the cell by a nuclear membrane (envelope)

DNA is circular, floats within cell.

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a chemical compound

that stores and transmits genetic information

2. Eukaryotic Cells

Have a nucleus

DNA is arranged in strands called chromosomes

DNA is housed in the nucleus and separated from the

rest of the cell by a cell membrane

A Little More about Prokaryotic Cells…

Prokaryotic cells:

lack most organelles

Organelles = tiny “organ-like” structures

in the cell

do not contain mitochondria but

obtain energy from either sunlight

or from chemicals in their

environment.

contain ribosomes which create

proteins

Most prokaryotes are unicellular

organisms, such as bacteria.

Much smaller than eukaryotic

cells

2 Types of Eukaryotic Cells

Eukaryotic cells are much more complex and larger than

their simple cousins the prokaryotic cell.

They contain membrane-bound organelles (including

mitochondria and chloroplasts)

Most are Multicellular, few unicellular

We will talk more about the inner workings of the

eukaryotic cell tomorrow, but for now we are going to

learn the basics of the 2 types of eukaryotic cells:

Plant Cells:

Have a cell wall, which helps with

cell support

Have a central vacuole, which

acts as a water storage center for

the plant cell

Contain chloroplast, where

photosynthesis takes place

Photosynthesis = process

through which plants get their

energy by converting sunlight

and energy into glucose

Plant vs. Animal Cells

Animal Cells:

Do not have a cell wall

Do not have a central vacuole,

but may have a few tiny

vacuoles/vesicles

Do not contain chloroplasts
