Recently, children at the Jamboree Heights C&K Kindergarten hosted some very special guests at their annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic, and enjoyed activities including making

teddy bear ears, painting and making their special friends some jewellery. Judging by the smiles on the day, a great time was had by all.

Hello ReadersAs I listened to our College Captain, Lachlan address our Year 12 students on the first morning of the Queensland Core Skills Test I reflected on the privilege it is to have the opportunity to shape the values and attitudes of young people in their formative years so that they may be people of influence in the communities in which they will live and work.

Lachlan’s message to his peers was about teamwork, support for one another, expecting the best of oneself and one another and being confident in your abilities. It was certainly inspirational and aligned with what we have come to expect of our College leaders and graduates. The St John’s community thanks Captains, Lachlan and Hannah, for their inspirational leadership and commitment as the 2014 College Captains.

Preparation for life and work at St John’s begins at Little Saints’ Kindergarten and from 2015 St John’s will be moving to introduce the International Baccalaureate as the teaching framework from Kindy to Year 8. In this way the College will meet the Australian Curriculum requirements while adding value to St John’s students learning through the IB.

A recent research report conducted by Deakin University in schools using the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) in Melbourne and Singapore, found that parents are very positive about their children’s education in the PYP and that students are significantly more likely to have high levels of “learning skills’ and self awareness in regard to their learning and personal development. IB Learners focus on the development of lifelong learning skills as students move through their years of schooling in order to be people of influence in our global community.

Worldwide, IB programs have gained a reputation not only for academic rigour but also for developing internationally minded people who are good thinkers and communicators, caring and reflective with an inquiring mind. Currently, more than one million IB students attend nearly 3,700 schools in 146 countries.

One of my favourite quotes at the moment is by Seth Godin - You don’t need more time; you just need to decide.

Most of us have a reasonable understanding that our time is precious, yet more than ever, we live in an age filled to the brim with ‘time-wasters’.

I’ve been challenged recently to think more about how I spend this precious commodity of time, and Seth Godin’s quote keeps reminding me that, outside of major life crisis, how I spend my time is my decision.

I’ve started to view everything I do through the lens of ‘Is this activity in keeping with my values?’. And that’s not as strict and rigid as it sounds.

If I value relationships, then any activity or contact with people is significant and in keeping with my values. This means that a day spent with my daughter shopping and having cups of tea is not wasted even though I don’t much value shopping. What I do value is maintaining a good relationship with my daughter, and a good cup of tea, of course!

You see, you can easily find what your values are by having a close look at how you spend your time and whether the actual priority and the perceived priority are the same. Sometimes we think our priorities are one thing but if we examine how we are spending our time, it reveals something quite different.

By keeping the question of whether or not an activity serves our values at the forefront of our minds, we can begin to make better decisions. And it stops us from wasting time because really, there is enough time to do all we need to do, we just need to be better managers of it.

I’m finding I have greater satisfaction at the end of the day if I simply remember to do this. I can rest knowing I’ve made choices that reinforce my values, which for me, are usually all about relationships - upwards, outwards and inwards.

We all want our life to have meaning. What we often don’t realise is that we are the keepers of whether it does or not. We are free to choose, each and every day, whether we advance our values or hinder them. We get to choose what our life looks like, regardless of our circumstances.

We are constantly making choices, whether we are conscious of it or not. If we start being aware of our choices and what it says about our values, we can begin to align the two and live a life rich in meaning.

Members of Jindalee Bushcare Group are trying everything they can think of to counter the ravages of the feral deer on local bushland.

Shealagh Walker, convenor of the group, said, “One of our members, Claire Wilson, thought we could follow a current art trend and knit protective stockings for the trees that the deer damage by stripping the bark. Another member, Di Ruffles, took up the idea and has started knitting! She does the strips in muted colours to blend in with the bushland.”

The strips are then tied around trees where the bark has been partly stripped to prevent further damage. Once the bark is stripped from the entire circumference of the tree, it is effectively ringbarked and will slowly die. Knitting is a time consuming process so strips of shade cloth at the next working bee will be used to protect as many trees along the Mount Ommaney Bushland Reserve as possible.

“If this works, and so far it has, perhaps other Bushcare Groups around the city can take up the idea,” said Shealagh.

Feral deer are found in all the bushland areas of the Centenary suburbs, however, with the recent dry period, their food supply in the bushland has run out and the deer have now moved into the irrigated gardens of the local suburbs.

Centenary and District Environment Action has been working on the deer problem since they turned up in the Centenary suburbs in 2000. They helped get rusa deer declared as a Class 2 declared pest animal under Queensland legislation. Under this, it is the responsibility of landholders to control feral rusa deer on their land. However, this is proving very difficult. If anyone knows where the deer hold out during the day, he or she can help by informing the BCC Call Centre on 3403 8888.

Brisbane City Council is increasing its efforts and resources to control the deer but so far the deer are winning. They breed twice in three years and their numbers are burgeoning throughout South East Queensland and elsewhere.

“If we don’t all do something urgently, the bushland will be destroyed and suburbs will be over-run by feral deer at night. They are getting bolder and bolder, I suppose as they get hungrier and hungrier. We have to act now to do more to remove the deer,” said Shealagh.

Creative solutions to feral deer problem


The Jindalee Lions Club recently held their ninth Children of Courage Awards and this year we recognized six young children who face life with courage despite their disability. With these children who have successfully overcome additional barriers which face them every day, we believe that our award acts as an encouragement for their future and helps them believe in themselves and increase their self-worth.

The recipients of the Children of Courage Award this year were Nathanael Kemp from Mount Ommaney Special School, Emma Watkins from Jamboree Heights State School Special Education and Vision Impairment Program, Brendan Innes from Jamboree Heights State School Special Education and Vision Impairment Program, Mason Parker from Mount Ommaney Special School, Blake Denman from Kenmore Special School and Samara Rigg was awarded the Sibling Award.

We were fortunate to have Tarnya Smith MP and Councillor Matthew Bourke assist with the presentation of a plaque and a pillowslip. District Chairman Diane Unwin gave us an inside look into the awards and we thank Diane and DG Bruce for attending. Staff members of the Mount Ommaney Special School and Jamboree Heights State School Special Education and Vision Impairment Program were also present.

We were pleased to receive a grant from the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund and a beautiful cake donated by Shingle Inn to make this event possible. It takes special people to cope with these special children and we recognised the parents and families who have that in-built courage to live their lives in a caring positive way. We thank them for attending these awards and allowing us to become a part of their family, albeit, in a small way. Next year we will organise these awards for the 10th time and we will make this another special occasion.

Art in Bark members will have a display of bark pictures, jewellery, cards, book markers, key rings etc. for sale made from paper bark from Melaleuca Trees, as well as plenty of other arts and crafts.

This year I am holding a competition for students aged five to 12 in the Oxley electorate to design my 2014 Christmas Card. In previous years, I have received an overwhelming amount of entries and I am hoping that we can expect the same this year.

The theme is ‘What Christmas means to you’ and the winner will be the most creative and colourful entry. The winner’s artwork will featured on my Christmas card and they will also receive a Trek Bike and Helmet pack valued at $300.

They say the definition of a triathlete is a person who doesn’t understand that one sport is enough. Perhaps they just believe that three sports are better than one? The multi-sport event that combines swim, ride and run is growing in popularity especially in our own local community.

Locals are transforming into weekend warriors and using the multi-discipline sport as a way to get fit, accomplish a challenge goal and share quality active time with family.

The Westside Triathlon Club prides itself on being an all abilities family friendly club with many of its members involving the entire family. From beginners to aspiring Ironmen, the club, based in Jindalee, trains in the local area and participates and competes as individuals and teams at triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon events from Kingscliff to Townsville. Two upcoming events the club is taking part in are the Gold Coast Cycling Festival in October and Noosa Triathlon Festival in November.

The club has seen several of its members go on to represent Australia in international events with nine members this August being part of the Australian team at the ITU Triathlon Age Group World Championships in Edmonton Canada. There were some inspiring top ten and mid field results at this international event but aside from accomplishing their personal competitive goals, the members said the camaraderie and support of their fellow club members was definitely a highlight of the experience.

Among the international representatives is Middle Park resident and working mum Hannah Ryan, who with the help of the Westside Triathlon Club has discovered a passion for triathlon.

“Two years ago I couldn’t ride a bike and I’ve recently returned from Canada as part of the Australia Triathlon team,” said Hannah. “Being a member of the club gave me the support and encouragement I needed to firstly give it a go and then to set my goals higher and work towards achieving them through persistence and incremental improvement.

“Triathlon is an individual sport but being part of a club means you get to train with a range of people with different abilities and strengths and learn from and encourage each other. The great mix of people at the club means we always have a great laugh too.”

The club has a junior squad for 7-13 year olds as well as a senior squad. The junior and senior squads train at the same time on Saturday mornings so it is very convenient for families as parents don’t have to miss out on their own weekend fitness training.

Training sessions are available on weekdays and Saturdays. When your dog jumps on you or others it is attention seeking behaviour. And it is how you greet them that can intensify this behavior. A look, a pat or picking your dog up at this time will only reinforce your dog’s habit and they will continue to jump. While it is cute when they are puppies, they do grow up. And it is when you have a 40kg dog jumping up and knocking you down that you wish you had stopped it earlier. Even a small dog can become tangled under your feet.

Some believe this is a dog’s way of showing you that they love you and miss you, when in actual fact it is a dog that is not balanced and not in a stable mindset.

Your dog is saying to you “Look at me, look at me!”. Once you acknowledge them, you are giving them the response or the positive reinforcement they are looking for.

Ignore, ignore, ignore. By not looking at them, by not responding to them, they become bored and sit. Once they are calm and sitting quietly, this is the time to reward, and by reward I mean a “Hello”. This is positive reinforcement time.

This method of training may help in other situations, ignore the negative and reward the positive. Now, of course you cannot ignore the fact that your dog digs holes or chews your furniture. This is when a firm “NO” used in a negative tone is needed. As soon as they stop, use a positive tone and/or reward. It feels like a consistent uphill battle sometimes, but at the end of the day your dog rewards you in so many extra ways.

Owning a dog requires a lifetime of training and learning for both sides. We always need to show them how to behave and what is acceptable. They can bring us great joy and happiness; it is up to us to return the love, by helping them understand. Making time in our busy lives for training, walking, playing with our dogs, will be returned to us three fold.

Your dog walking on lead and pulling you around like a rag doll is easily corrected. A good, long walk each and every day is great for mind, body and soul for both you and your dog. It is difficult to find time for everything, but a half an hour walk each day will relieve stress, anxiety and excitement build up in your dog. Dogs will pull on lead due to over excitement; if the novelty of going out for a walk is taken away, the pulling will stop.

Understanding why our dogs bark and their body language will bring us closer to understanding our dogs. The latest research on training, which has been s c i ent i f i ca l l y proven to work, shows that dogs will response f a s t e r, a n d m o r e effectively, to positive reinforcement than to a negative. Negative can result in behavioural i s s u e s , s u c h a s aggression, excessive barking, destruction and many more.

Recently the topic of transportation of pets in vehicles was raised in our clinic, so we thought it would be a good idea to enlighten those who may be a little in the dark (as some of us were) on this as the written law has progressed over the years.

As some of you may not know, driving a vehicle with an animal unrestrained or on your lap, whether inside a car, cabin or in the back of a ute, is a federal offence. Even if the dog is restrained but hanging their head out the window or off the side of a tray back, you could find yourself in hot water with the police as it is considered an ‘overhanging load’. Those animals that are unrestrained are what is considered an ‘unsecured load’ and both of these offences can inflict a loss of up to three points, and a fine between $340 and $2200.

RSPCA statistics reveal that up to 5000 dogs each year are either injured or killed in Australia as a direct result of falling from a moving vehicle. The RSPCA can also issue a fine under The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act whereby if an animal is injured due to being unrestrained, the owners can face up to six months in jail and fines up to $5,500. Under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001, any person in charge of an animal has duty of care to maintain the animals welfare before, during and after transport occurs.

An unsecure animal can become a flying missile, which can not only severely injure them but also yourself, a family member or another driver by going through a windscreen. To put this into perspective, if a 27kg German Shepherd is unsecured, travelling at 48km and experiences a collision, the German Shepherd can cause an impact of 1,224 kilograms.

The best protection for your family and your pet is to have them securely fastened in the back seat or cabin of your car. Riding shotgun, even if secured, places a big risk to your animals life as the airbags are a hazard if they were to go off. If in a ute, a dog needs to be securely tethered so no parts of their body can overhang the vehicle or better yet in a transport cage fastened to the cabin.

Here is another interesting historical route to follow in Jindalee, by foot or bicycle. Start at the western end of Kooringal Drive, Jindalee near its intersection with Mankinna Street. You will see ahead of you an impressive bridge spanning Scrub Creek.

Opened in February 2010, the bridge is Australia’s largest single-span aluminium bridge which enables pedestrians and cyclists to link up with Mt Ommaney Drive along the riverside. From the bridge, look down to the creek and imagine early landowners accessing their farms by row boat from the river. The creek now makes its way through the suburb and is responsible for some of the past flooding of nearby houses and the Jindalee Primary school. The path you are on winds uphill through pleasant shrubs and trees which are part of Jindalee Park.

As you join Mt Ommaney Drive, look for the wooden telegraph pole outside number 22 painted with the flood markings for 1974, 2011, and 2013. A resident and long time member of the Centenary Suburbs Historical Society has diligently recorded these levels. Looking around, you can imagine how devastating these floods must have been!

The next historical attraction is a 150 year old fig tree in Murna Street. Turn left into Cobbadah Street and then right into Murna Street. On your right you will see a path between house numbers 3 and 7, with a Council notice at the entrance. Walking in you will find the historic fig tree surrounded by short blue poles to prevent damage.

From early colonial times, the tree has provided a shady outdoor recreation spot for successive generations of local residents and visitors. It has always been on public property. From 1864, the tree site was on a public access lane to the river. These lanes were essential to farmers without riverside properties in the days when goods were taken to market by boat.

When housing development focused on the western end of Jindalee, the developersrecognised the tree’s potential as a promotional feature in parkland. The area around the tree was set aside as public

land with seven house allotments backing onto the small park that was created. The developers built a wooden seat and a concrete path around the trunk of the tree. Since then the tree’s existence has been threatened several times through neglect, drought and lightning strikes. Swayed by public opinion in 2008, the Council removed large lateral branches back to the stem, mulched to the drip line, reduced access to the tree; and with annual monitoring checked for any additional signs of decay. As you can see now the fig tree looks very healthy. If only this tree could talk, what stories it could tell us!

Exploring the past in the Centenary suburbs – part 3

We wish you all a happy October. Each month new members are joining our Club and our activities. It is good to love what you are doing and feel that it matters and have fun at the same time.

Our General Meeting is on Tuesday 7th October commencing at 9.30am with our Annual Plant Sale and Morning Tea. This will be followed by our Meeting and then we will be entertained by Romain. What a lot to fit in on one morning.

Our coach trip to Toowoomba for the ‘Carnival of Flowers’ last month was a lovely day. We came back totally exhausted after going around all the gardens but it was a very enjoyable day. We are following on with the ‘garden’ theme this month with our Explorer Trip (using public transport to travel) by going to the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens for the day. It’s truly amazing where you can travel to by using your GO CARD and it’s not expensive.

We keep up the pace every Monday morning at the Middle Park Uniting Church Hall at 9am with our ‘Steady Steppers’ dancing to the music. (This session is open to everyone). We also put on our thinking caps with the MahJong group at the Mt Ommaney Library on the first two Thursdays each month. (This group is only open to NSA members). Then there’s all the other activities that we do through the month; plays, concerts, evening dinners, morning teas; the list is never-ending. We certainly don’t find time to mope around the house.

We have our Book Club on the third Thursday morning each month – 10am at the Jindalee Bowls Club and we’ve also recently started a Bolivia card game every Wednesday morning at 9am at the Jindalee Bowls Club. We are constantly on the lookout for new activities senior people can participate in and enjoy. There is a suggestion box at the door at every General Meeting for new ideas on what we can do and how far we can travel.

I must make mention of our 2014 Seniors Week Special Activity recently held. Thanks to Carol and her lovely ladies, we enjoyed a special ‘High Tea’ and entertainment at the Jindalee Bowls Club. Carol, Ellen, Doreen, Jill and Jill – A very big thank you! Carol has already told me that she’d like to do it again next year.
