2015 Annual Report New donations combined with matching dollars from Lilly Endowment brought more than $1 million in endowed funds to the Community Foundation of Jackson County through the generous GIFT VI program. The gifts can boost grant-making to the community by an additional $40,000 annually, depending upon earnings. Lilly Endowment provided $500,000 in matching dollars to the Foundation through the Lilly GIFT VI initiative, which kicked off Aug. 1, 2014. The Foundation brought in $540,862 in donations to earn the matching dollars. That totals $1,040,862 in newly endowed assets. The number of individuals making pledges through the program is another strong indicator of the community’s support for the Foundation’s work, added Jim Johnson of the Board’s Executive Committee. A total of 208 individuals, businesses and organizations made contributions to the GIFT VI initiative to earn matching dollars. Gifts increased the assets of a number of existing endowments and created five new funds that the Foundation will administer. As the name indicates, GIFT VI was not the first time Lilly Endowment has assisted community foundations across Indiana. “Lilly Endowment played a pivotal role in the creation of the Community Foundation of Jackson County and many others across the Hoosier state with its Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow initiatives,” Dan Davis said. He is the Foundation’s President and CEO. “Its guidance and matching dollars helped start this organization in 1992, and in the years since it has continued to help our Foundation grow and to benefit people and programs all around Jackson County.” This year, the Community Foundation of Jackson County approved a granting rate that will pay out $345,279 in grants from scholarship funds, donor advised funds, designated funds, agency funds and unrestricted funds. That’s up from $328,073 approved for 2015 and can be expected to grow in coming years as a result of the GIFT VI initiative. Donors to the GIFT VI initiative included a mix of long-time supporters of the Foundation, area businesses and new donors, Davis said. One hundred percent of the Foundation Board of Directors and staff participated in the program. There was also strong support from the Foundation’s former Board members, area banks and other businesses and individuals. A GIFT VI Development Committee of current Board members Denise Connell, Kevin Gabbard, Andy Royalty, Ron Sibert and former Board members Chris Klaes, Gary Myers, Jim Potts and Dave Windley helped the Foundation staff talk with potential donors to obtain pledges and donations. “It was rewarding to see the positive reaction of former board members, individual donors and business managers who understand the value of the services and grant dollars that their gifts and the Foundation’s work deliver to people throughout Jackson County,” said Gabbard, a vice president at MainSource Bank in Seymour. A bulk of the new gifts and matching dollars will increase the Foundation’s unrestricted funds. Those donations total $226,234 and earned $342,686 in matching dollars. The GIFT VI program created two new unrestricted funds, including the Michael and Ardith Fleetwood Unrestricted Endowment. Since then, our local Foundation has awarded more than $5 million in community grants, helping countless people and organizations improve our communities all across Jackson County. In 2015, the Foundation’s Board of Directors paid out $388,535.94 in grants and scholarships. We anticipate topping that this year. Organizations and people benefitting from grants and endowments over the years range from youth to seniors and include social service and nonprofit agencies, area schools, volunteer fire departments, the arts and municipal parks. We partnered with the Town of Brownstown to help move the Heritage Park on the Courthouse Square toward reality (stay tuned – work is about to get under way). And we’ve provided grants for projects and programs throughout the rest of Jackson County. The Foundation staff, our Board of Directors and former members of the Board are already brain- storming ideas for celebrating the organization’s 25th anniversary next year and for ensuring that the next 25 years and beyond reap continued growth for and provide leadership in our community. They include The Francis “Pat” Myers and Dorothy M. Myers Fund, the Don and Emmylou Bollinger Fund, the Bob and Eileen Prather Scholarship Fund and the Reddington Christian Church Fund. From those first donations, the number of funds administered by the Foundation has grown to 177, including five that resulted from the GIFT VI initiative over the past 18 months. While we focused much attention this past year on our GIFT VI efforts, our work involved much more. The Community Foundation of Jackson County continues to support efforts to improve educational opportunities for county residents and businesses. They come in the form of college classes offered by Ivy Tech Community College and IUPUC as well as training sessions and classes offered to workers from area businesses, including JayC Food Stores, Kremers Urban and others. The Foundation also remains involved in educational efforts with the Jackson County Education Coalition, including its On My Way Pre- K pilot program, which is preparing for its second year; the Economic Opportunity Network and its many initiatives; Leadership Jackson County; and, of course, the many scholarship funds that we administer. New donations combined with matching dollars from Lilly Endowment brought more than $1 million in endowed funds to the Community Foundation of Jackson County through the generous GIFT VI program.

“Its guidance and matching dollars helped start this organization in 1992, and in the years since it has continued to help our Foundation grow and to benefit people and programs all around Jackson County.”

This year, the Community Foundation of Jackson County approved a granting rate that will pay out $345,279 in grants from scholarship funds, donor advised funds, designated funds, agency funds and unrestricted funds. That’s up from $328,073 approved for 2015 and can be expected to grow in coming years as a result of the GIFT VI initiative.

Donors to the GIFT VI initiative included a mix

of long-time supporters of the Foundation, area businesses and new donors, Davis said.

“It was rewarding to see the positive reaction of former board members, individual donors and business managers who understand the value of the services and grant dollars that their gifts and the Foundation’s work deliver to people throughout

Jackson County,” said Gabbard, a vice president at MainSource Bank in Seymour.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship ProgramThe Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program began in 1997. It was created to “raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and increase awareness of the potential of Indiana’s community foundations to improve the quality of life of the state’s residents.” The Community Foundation of Jackson County currently has 4 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars, with one more recipient to be selected in the spring of 2016. The program provides full tuition, fees, and a stipend for books and equipment for four years of undergraduate study, full time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at any Indiana public or private college or university accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

“We wanted to establish an unrestricted fund to provide for general grantmaking to help the Community Foundation continue to identify and address needs in our county,” Mike Fleetwood of Seymour said of the family’s decision to start the fund.

“Unrestricted funds are critical to ensuring that the Community Foundation can work to positively impact our county,” he added. “Unrestricted funds provide the greatest flexibility in impacting developing and current issues facing this area.”

Fleetwood, who earlier served 10 years as a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, rejoined the Board last April. He is the director-in-charge of Blue & Co. in Seymour.

“We believe that each of us has a responsibility to give back in some way to our community,” Ardith Fleetwood said. “Whether that be our time or our financial support, we all have a shared responsibility to work to improve where we live.”

The remainder of the newly endowed dollars, $314,628 in gifts and $157,314 in matching dollars, will bolster other funds administered by the Foundation, including scholarship, donor advised and designated funds. Among those is the new Orville and Laura Lubker/Purdue University Scholarship Fund.

The Lubkers, retirees from the Brownstown area, created the fund to give back to the community and

benefit Brownstown Central High School graduating seniors who plan to attend Purdue University. Orville was a teacher and guidance counselor for many years at Crothersville, Tampico and Brownstown schools, and he and Laura for years raised watermelons and muskmelons on their farm along U.S. 50 east of Brownstown. Orville died last summer.

“We have always valued education, and the scholarship is a way of giving back to the community where we have lived, worked and done business,” Laura Lubker said of why the couple decided to establish the scholarship fund.

Orville Lubker was a 1952 graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette.

“I think it’s a good chance to honor students at Brownstown who work hard for their grades but who may not have the highest scores and who have a financial need,” Orville said when establishing the fund. “With the cost of college these days, most everyone probably has some sort of need.”

Laura expects to see their endowed fund bear fruit with the awarding of its first scholarship this spring.
