The Rubicon Harmonix is a youth performing ensemble founded and directed by Miriam Arichea. The precursor to the Harmonix began as a Christmas troupe dubbed “Miriam’s Elves” in 2011 and 2012. The group expanded its size and repertoire in 2013 to sing not only at Holiday venues such as the Downtown Ventura Treelighting and Tiny Tots Concerts at Rubicon Theatre, but also at community events, including Ventura Unified School District’s Festival of Talent, St. Johns Hospital, Summerfest, the Rotary 4th of July Fireworks, and Miriam’s 50th birthday party.

They recently presented their first annual spring outdoor concert this past June, with almost two hours of music, for the benefit of the Rubicon Theatre Education and Outreach programs. At this concert, each of the Harmonix received a commendation from the Mayor of Ventura for their service to the community in spreading joy through music.

The Harmonix all have in common their participation in Rubicon Theatre’s summer programs. Between them, they have played leading roles in the Rubicon productions of In the Heights, West Side Story, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Captain Louie, and Jungle Book, and supporting roles in Drowsy Chaperone and Free to Be You and Me. The individual members are: Daniel Brackett, a junior at Ventura High School and an original, 6-year member of the group; Lexie Collins, a sophomore at Newbury Park High School and 1-year member; Riley Conrad; a junior at Ventura High and 4-year member; Cassidy Craig, also a Ventura High junior and 6-year member; Made-line Gambon, a junior at Rancho Campana and 5-year member; Gus Graham, a home-schooled junior from Santa Paula and 5-year member; Jesse Graham, a home-schooled senior from Santa Paula and 6-year member; Sarah Mehrnia, a senior at Ventura High and 6-year member; and Nico Wicklin, a senior at Saint Bonaventure and 1-year member.

Miriam Arichea is privileged to appear once again with CHICO, with whom she has been perform-ing since its inception in 2004. Miriam has also performed with the Ventura College Symphony and San Luis Obispo Chamber Orchestra, as well as in solo and collaborative performances at the Ojai Arts Centre and Ventura Music Festival.

Miriam has also served as music director and pianist for a number of community groups and events, including the Rubicon Theatre Company, the Ventura Unified Festival of Talent, and Temple Beth Torah. Miriam was the honored recipient of the 2014 Ventura Mayor’s Arts Award for Arts Educator.

Miriam studied for many years with the late, renowned pianist Sofia Cosma, as well as with Tibor Szasz and Loren Withers at Duke University, and Halimah Brugger. She presently receives valu-able coaching from Natasha Kislenko, faculty at University of California Santa Barbara.

A lawyer by training, Miriam received her undergraduate and law degrees at Duke University. She presently handles criminal appeals as a court-appointed attorney with the California Appellate Project. Miriam also coaches and coordinates the Ventura High School mock trial and academic decathlon teams. Miriam and her husband Jeff Brackett have three children – Josh, Arielle, and Daniel.

P r o g r a m N o t e sRubicon Family Christmas Opening Medley and Promise of Light were both performed as part of the popular Rubicon Theatre Company holiday revue, A Rubicon Family Christmas. The show debuted in 2008, with additional runs in 2009, 2012, and 2013. Originally per-formed with a jazz combo (piano, bass, guitar, reeds and drums), the orchestrations were writ-ten (very recently!) by orchestra member Cavit Celayir-MonezisAs a sidenote, all but one of the Harmonix members was cast as a child in the production!

Angels’ Carol and What Sweeter Music are just two of the two dozen carols written by English composer John Rutter, b. 1945, who also wrote the celebrated choral works Gloria, Requiem, and Magnificat. Fun facts: 7 of the current Harmonix performed Angels’ Carol in A Rubicon Family Christmas, 2012 version, at Ventura College; and What Sweeter Music was the back-ground music for an award-winning 1993 commercial for Volvo.

Kapustin Piano Concerto No. 2Nikolai Kapustin, b. 1937, in Ukraine, was a classically trained pianist and a graduate of the esteemed Moscow Conservatory. Jazz was also a major influence, and beginning in the late 1950s, he performed and toured with several jazz groups throughout the Soviet Union.

This piano concerto, like much of Kapustin’s piano music, is a fusion of classical and jazz, with a wealth of jazz idioms that are written out in all their tonal and rhythmic complexity. Kapustin’s music is technically difficult, but at the same time imaginative and unusual in the harmonies and turns of phrase. There are instances here where one hears reminiscences of Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel.

His works are not often performed for a variety of reasons, including : (1) Kapustin’s lack of interest in self-promotion; (2) the “rarefied” performance demands of his music; and (3) the “interdisciplinary” nature of his works such that both classical and jazz listeners are apt to have misgivings about either the notated jazz details into the classical mold, or the absence of true improvisation.

This concerto is one of six composed by Kapustin, who has over 100 opuses, including so-natas, preludes, etudes, works for cello and chamber orchestra. Kapustin currently lives in Moscow with his wife, devoting much of his time to composition and recording.

O COME, ALL YE FAITHFULOh, come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant!Oh, come ye, oh, come ye to Bethlehem;Come and behold himBorn the king of angels:Oh, come, let us adore him, Oh, come, let us adore him,Oh, come, let us adore him,Christ the Lord.

See how the shepherds,Summoned to his cradle,Leaving their flocks, draw nigh with lowly fear;We too will thitherBend our joyful footsteps:Oh, come, let us adore him, Oh, come, let us adore him,Oh, come, let us adore him,Christ the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels,Sing in exultation,Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!Glory to GodIn the highest:Oh, come, let us adore him, Oh, come, let us adore him,Oh, come, let us adore him,Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,Born this happy morning;Jesus, to thee be glory given!Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing!Oh, come, let us adore him, Oh, come, let us adore him,Oh, come, let us adore him,Christ the Lord.

THE FIRST NOWELLThe first Noel the angels did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay:In fields where they lay keeping their sheepOn a cold winter’s night that was so deep.Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a starShining in the east beyond them far:And to the earth it gave great lightAnd so it continued both day and night.Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,Born is the King of Israel.

Then entered in those wise men three,Fell reverently upon their knee,And offered there in his presenceTheir gold and myrrh and frankincense.Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,Born is the kind of Israel.

Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heavenly Lord,That hath made heaven and earth of naught,And with his blood mankind has bought.Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,Born is the King of Israel.
