The Chantry School Newsletter Dear Parents/Carer We are re-launching our website this month. The new domain name is www.chantryschool.com. Please do take time to have a look. The website is, natu- rally, the main forum for information about the school, such as term dates, policies, curriculum as well as statutory information that we must publish. We have moved much of the pupil curriculum resources that were available on the old website into the Home Access Plus area. Pupils can access this from the link on the front page of the website, using their usual school logon and so reach work that their teachers have left for them. A link to Parent Pay is also easily available. Allied to our website development, we have also been upgrading our Sims Learning Gateway service this term. This is our portal for you to access information about your child, including attendance, behaviour and reports. There is further functionality to come in the near future with this, and we will inform you when this is released. Current school news will also feature on the front page of the school website. This is a feed from our new Twitter account where we will be keeping you updated with current developments. You can fol- low us on Twitter @chantryschool. Many of you will be aware that there is a lot of building work within, and beyond, the schools catchment area at the mo- ment. We are in discussion with Worces- tershire County Council about the impli- cations for this on the schools ability to continue to serve its community and en- sure a sufficient number of places for children coming through from primary school, and for those moving into the ar- ea. We are shortly about to launch a for- mal consultation with stakeholders to seek views around the school increasing its planned admission number from 145 to 180. This would mean the school tak- ing in 6 classes in Y7 instead of the cur- rent 5. Please look out for the consulta- tion letter very soon and offer comments back to us to help inform our planning and decision making. The school was visited in June by one of Her Majestys Inspectors, conducting a best practice visit into work with disad- vantaged pupils. As a result of this, the school featured, briefly, in the Chief In- spectors annual report to government. We were pleased to be invited to the event and have our work in this area vali- dated. Mrs Pat Owen, governor, has once again been working very hard with pupils in the school, and with schools far and wide. Our British Council project has come to an end, but I am delighted that thanks to Pats, and also Mr Allisons, work with the young people, the school has had its In- ternational School Award re-accredited for a further three years. Well done and many thanks to staff and pupils involved in achieving this. Finally, my very best wishes to all our pupils, parents and staff for a happy and peaceful festive season. Dear Parents/Carer

We are re-launching our website this month. The new domain name is www.chantryschool.com. Please do take time to have a look. Goodbyes

We are saying a very sad fare-well to Dave Darling our Busi-ness Manager this Christmas. Dave has been working at the school for 14 years and he is now off to pastures new. Dave has been a highly professional and supportive colleague over the years and has overseen a lot of new building works that have benefitted the pupils enormously. We wish Dave all the best for the future.

Also leaving this Christmas is Andy Jones, Assistant Caretaker who is retiring. Andy has worked here for the last ten years and has been a very willing, helpful and reliable colleague. We wish Andy a very long and happy re-tirement.

Computer Programming club Computer Programming club has been running since the beginning of term. Pupils have enjoyed try-ing out a range of coding skills and they are now working in groups on three development areas: raspberry pi programming, Python programming and Apple app development using Swift. This is a great opportunity for pu-pils to explore at their own pace and experience the challenge and great rewards that come from learning to program. All en-thusiastic, aspiring coders wel-come. See Miss Dowding (Room 17) if you’re interested in joining us.

Drama This year’s musical production of ‘Grease’ is well on its way to be-ing another Chantry hit show from 3rd to 5th February. The cast, musicians and dancers have been rehearsing every week to make sure it will be a show to remember. Posters are printed and tickets are now on sale from the school office, price £7.00 each, so be sure to get yours soon before they sell out! Ms J Poulter

Berlin Trip

On 21st October 2015 at 2.00am (yes you read that right) pupils from The Chantry school set out on what would be a memorable trip to the German capital.

Arriving before midday, our group of approximately 30 pupil quickly dropped off our bags at the youth hotel, before swiftly moving out to explore the rich, but relatively short history of Berlin. Lunch next to the Holocaust memorial fol-lowed by a visit to a nuclear bun-ker in the heart of the city added a sombre feel to the afternoon, however coffee and cake from a local café livened up the mood before the group headed back to the hotel.

Perhaps the most thrilling event was seeing the famous sites of Berlin by bike, followed by a tour of Topography of Terror (a muse-um explaining the Nazi’s rise to power). The day was concluded by the group going to the top of the TV tower to see the city by night.

The penultimate day involved a coach journey out to Sachsen-hausen, a concentration camp on the outskirts of the city. Later, the group visited the Olympic stadi-um which hosted the controver-sial Olympic Games in 1936. De-spite tired limbs, the group reig-nited their spirits enough to expe-rience a German bowling alley.

Our final day in Berlin consisted of a trip to a large shopping cen-tre, as well as visiting an intri-cately decorated section of the German wall before finally jetting off back home.

News from the Library

The library has welcomed two Year 7 pupils who have complet-ed the assistant librarian scheme. This teaches pupils how to research using books and the computer, how to work in a team doing various duties around the library and builds confidence. I now have six pupils to assist me.

Recently, I have been fortunate to take a small group to visit two other schools to listen to authors. On 4 November I went to listen to Charlie Higson at Hanley Castle High School. He is an actor, co-median, director and author. Most famous for acting in the Fast Show, writing the Jekyll and Hyde series on television and an author of the Young Bond series for children. He was very inter-esting and entertaining. At the end, the pupils bought books and had them personally signed.

On 11 November, myself and 10 boys went to listen to Jonathan Stroud. He is an author of teen fiction namely the Bartimaeus series and Lockwood and Co. He talked about how he became in-terested in writing and how his life influences his stories. After university he became an editor which led him to write his own stories. He engaged the audi-ence and there were plenty of questions asked at the end of his presentation. The boys had a chance to chat to Jonathan whilst he signed their books.

Talent Show

The Talent Show this Christmas will take place on Thursday, 17th December at 7.00pm in the school hall. Tickets are on sale at £4.00 each from the school of-fice.

Well over 40 pupils were audi-tioned for the show ranging from dancers, monologues, soloists, duets and bands. It was a very hard job to find just 15 acts to go through to the Talent Show. Well done to everyone who audi-tioned.

Take Over Day

On 20th November a group of 14 Year 8 Chantry pupils were in-volved in the Children’s Commis-sion Takeover Challenge 2015/16. The group ‘took over’ the Worcestershire County Coun-cil Emergency Planning Unit, based in the Emergency Re-sponse Centre in the depths of the County Hall basement. They were actively engaged in discus-sion and group work on planning for emergencies such as major flooding, including the value of effective local community resili-ence. Visits by members of West Mercia Police and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Ser-vice proved very popular, as did the opportunity to climb aboard the Emergency vehicles! An in-formative and enjoyable day con-cluded with the presentation of ‘Take Over’ certificates and ‘Resilience Champion’ badges to the pupils.

Rowing On 28th of November, twelve of us from the Worcester Rowing Club ranging from 12 to 16 drove up to Cardiff in a Mini Bus with our Coach and a few parents to take part in the Welsh Indoor Rowing Championships. The day itself was a complete success for my club, with various medals of bronze, silver and gold achieved by myself and others. The Junior under 13’s had to row for 3 minutes and see how far they could go, Junior under 14’s was the same but for 4 minutes, under 15’s for 5 minutes and the junior under 16’s for 2000m. so the day was a complete enjoyment and I am proud to say that I am the Junior under 14’s Welsh Indoor Rowing Champion.

It is not just me who came back with my head held high, Lewis Mills, Dan Lightfoot, Charlie Coombs (all Y10) and Alex Hales Y11 also were very successful with the moral support and coaching from Ryan Hall Y10. Dan Lightfoot came out extremely well as he came home worth two Bronzes! Therefore, this day was a huge success for the boys at Worcester Rowing Club. Thank you for making the day a privilege to be a part of. by Tommy Fouweather, Y9

Year 9 Bridging the Devel-opment Gap

A group of around 40 pupils had the amazing opportunity to visit

Birmingham University to work with PhD students in the Interna-tional Development Department as part of the ERSC programme. Pupils found out reasons for the development gap in significant areas around the world as well as exploring some of the barriers that countries and areas face in trying to improve the quality of life for their populations. There were lively discussions, thoughtful Q&A sessions as well as lots of ‘BIG’ questions about development be-ing posed and tackled by year9. The PhD students were certainly put through their paces. A big thank you and well done to the Year 9 pupils involved they were a credit to the school and also a big thank you to Paul Jackson for setting up the day, organising the activities and hosting the event in

his department. Mrs Rudall

Physical Education- Newsletter Information – December 2015

Rugby As we enter the season for festive celebrations, it also an opportunity to review and celebrate the progress and successes of our teams as well. With the overall performances of our school teams this term they have achieved a success rate of 73% (Played 22 fixtures winning 16) this is a real sign of our success and performances in the Worcester City Schools leagues and the Worcestershire schools Rugby cup competitions.

The Year 11 Rugby squad in their final year have produced some excellent performances seeing them beating Arrow Vale 41-0 in the quarter finals and a close win in the semi-final match against South Bromsgrove 7-5 in the last few minutes of the game. They now play in the cup final against The Chase School on Monday 14th December at Bromsgrove RFC. With this being their final game for their time at The Chantry I am sure the lads will look to give one final performance that will be fitting for a cup final. The Year 7 Rugby squad has made a pleasing transition and progress towards contact Rugby this term. Tuesday night’s floodlit training sessions have been popular and well attended. Coaches Mr Lee Mills and Head Boy Alex Randall have looked to develop fundamental skills and, from a distance, I have seen that these aspects have been developed well with some competitive games at the end of training sessions. Apologies to mums for the very muddy kit! A recent match against two teams from John Masefield allowed The Chantry boys to test themselves in their first inter-school fixture. I am pleased to report they were victorious and they pose to be an excellent prospect for the future; maybe another Year 11 cup final in 2019? Both the Year 9 and 10 Rugby teams have had pleasing performances over the term in their league fixtures, but it has been very disappointing that they have not shown an interest and commitment to training. The Year 8 Rugby squad has had a phenomenal season both in the league and have reached the semi-final stages of the Worcestershire Schools’ Rugby Cup competition. With a record of not conceding a point to their opponents this season and a 100% victory rate (Played 7 won 7) this is something I am sure the squad will look to maintain for the remainder of the year. I am sure the lads would like to thank Mr Kevin Burton for assisting with coaching sessions and being a loud and supportive voice from the touchline. Not only has success been gained in fixtures but it should also be mentioned that several members of the squad have also gained representative county honours for Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Congratulations: Ewan, Liam, Raz, Conor and Marc.

Floodlit Rugby festival proves to be a highlight of the season for Chantry teams The Chantry hosted the Worcester City Schools’ annual Floodlit Rugby festival this week. As always it was well attended and supported. In three evenings for the Year 7,8 and 9 age groups approximately 300 boys were involved in 42 matches with close to 400 points being scored. The Chantry teams performed exceptionally well and were a credit to themselves and the school. The Year 8’s were winners of their age group competition and Years 7 and 9 were highly respectable runners up in their competitions. Well done lads, a fitting way to end your seasons. Thanks to staff: Mr Hill, Lee Mills and Kevin Burton for your time and assistance this term. Mr Stone.

Worcestershire Sports Awards Earlier this year, I was fortunate to be nominated into the Malvern Hills District Council Sports Awards for my work as a young leader since 2012. During this time, I have run a badminton club, established an Ultimate Frisbee club, whilst also doing the other ‘Young Leader roles’. The awards evening was held at Malvern College, in July, and I was privileged to leave with the Young Volunteer award.

However, much to my surprise I received an email in August to say that I had made it through to the Regional Sports Awards which was to be held at Sixways Stadium. I was completely unaware these sorts of events even existed – and was overwhelmed to be included. The evening turned out to be a much grander affair than what I had first anticipated – I had to wear a dinner suit - certainly a little different to my usual Young Leader’s outfit. It was obvious to me that my competition was very strong, especially for those competing for the same award as me. With myself being one of those with a competitive nature, I thought I would be disappointed with not winning the award – but I wasn’t. The evening was a completely new experience for me, and although I didn’t win , I was honoured to be included as it was great being surrounded by such fantastic sporting talent (especially Gail Emms!), but also as I was the only representative from a school, and additionally – the food was great! Thank you! Alex Randall, Y11

Football Floodlit Football clubs on Thursdays after school have been well attended this term. Coaches Mr L Mills and Mr S Butler have been regularly putting the lads through their paces and developing their skills and game performances. Next term will see all teams competing in the Worcester schools leagues and I am sure the hard work and training put in on the dark nights will result in many successes and victories.

House Matches House Matches continue to be popular with all year groups and competitions have, once again, been an opportunity for extended competition outside the curriculum. The atmosphere whether in the sports hall on Rowers, Benchball in the Gym, Hockey/Netball or on the Rugby/Football pitches is a clear opportunity to see pupils involved collaboratively working in teams, seeking to win the Big trophy.

Love Sport Programme - Anti bullying week On Monday 16th November and, as part of Anti Bullying week, The Chantry was visited by GB/Olympic athlete Mike Edwards. When Mike walked into The Chantry Gymnasium it was quite easy for the pupils to work out he was a High Jumper! Mike delivered a number of lessons to both Key Stage 3 and 4 pupilss that day offering them an insight into some of the aspects involved in his training regime. At the end of the day Mike delivered an assembly to Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils. As a youngster starting his life Journey in the UK moving to Florida,USA he shared the events of his life and the ‘Snakes and Ladder’ challenges he had faced as a youngster. I hope his visit and story will inspire our pupils to be the best they can be. Mike will be in Rio next summer and I guess there will be 300+ pupils wishing him well and keeping an eye on the TV! Mr Stone

The Cross Country Race, 16th October 2015 Worcestershire West Partnership Schools, Year 7 Championships, Malvern Common A boys of 6 and girls team of 8, from The Chantry entered this event with excellent results as 6 of our runners have qualified for the finals in March. They are, 2nd Katelyn Griffiths and 6th Aimee Cochrane 2nd , Sam Viner, 3rd Hayden Leek, 5th Morgan Watkins and 6th Josh Davies. Kaitlyn Griffiths wrote: “It wasn’t too tiring and I enjoyed it as I came 2nd, it was a nice track to run around as it was fun with girls and I was happy I came second. I think I did quite well as there were a lot of boys too and I loved it that I took part in the cross country, I didn’t care where a came at least I took part.”

Sports Leaders

The process to choose the new recruits for the Sports Leaders was difficult one again with 91 pupils returning application forms to start selection.

The competition was very high and I’d like to thank all the Year 8 pupils who applied. I will keep the forms and not forget those who made it so difficult to choose the final team. 14 were chosen: Jodie Whiteman, Kerry Blissett, Lily Smith, Abi Money, Georgia Livesey and Ellie Hunstone. Marc Hackman, Zac Bowater, Charlie Irish, Harvey James, Charlie Allford, Will Essex, Adam Scurrell and Conor Burton. They have made a most impressive start !

Also this term The Chantry hosted a Leadership training event for children in Years 5 and 6 back in September. All of our Feeder Primary Schools attended with 28 children in total. It is very encouraging to see so many potential Young Sports Leaders for future years at The Chantry. Mrs Simmonds

Young Leaders training for The Chantry and Partnership schools, 2nd October. At the Young Leader Training we attended at Dyson Perrins we learnt how and what it would be like to be a Young Leader. Also, we learnt how to make games for other children and what would be suitable for them to play. At Dyson Perrins we met other children from different schools who, like us, wanted to be Young Leaders. Overall we all had a great time and it really helped us with different skills that a Young Leader needs. by Kerry Blissett and Harvey James, Y8

Football Refereeing During October a group of Young Leaders (including myself) were asked to help referee at some football matches taking place in local primary schools. These were part of a league that has been organised into next year. The matches I helped at happened to be my first experience as a referee, but being a keen footballer myself I was confident with the task. For the first match I was linesman (a very confusing job as I found out!), but for the games after I was offered the job of actual referee. It was great fun and I feel I benefitted from the opportunity. My next chance to do it again is sometime in March so I am looking forward to then and hoping it will be just as good. George Mitchell, Y9

Talent Inspiration Programme Before the summer holidays I was told I had been one of two Young Leaders selected from the school to be nominated for the Talent Inspiration Programme. This was a three day course at Manchester University designed to make the top Young Leaders from around the whole country realise and use their potential.

I was thrilled to have been chosen, but I still had to make it through the process of elimination and be selected. Soon afterwards I found out that was exactly what I had done and I was going! I was told the opportunity involved meeting loads of new people, doing team activities ad visiting different parts of the university and Manchester itself. Furthermore, I also had the chance to get involved with the School Games, another national event a bit like the Olympics for the best young athletes in Britain.

Towards the end of the summer holidays I was driven to the venue and dropped off. Very soon I got used to the atmosphere of a university. My room was very nice, it happened to be brand new! I made loads of new friends and was very sad when it was over. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that I really benefitted from and will never forget. George Mitchell, Y9

KS1 Multi-skills Festival 13th November 2015

On Friday, The Chantry, with the help of the Young Leaders, hosted the annual Multi-Skills Festival for children in KS1 (Years 1 and 2) from many of our various feeder schools. As well as being a cause of great excitement for the children taking part, the event was also one of the first opportunities for the new Year 8 Young Leaders to ‘spread their wings’, putting into practise the newly acquired skills that they had learned from the training sessions. The day itself was a great success, with a total of about 250 children taking part in the fun across two sessions (one in the morning and another in the afternoon). Activities on offer included an obstacle course, a beanbag relay, some balancing games and countless others besides, each with the Young Leaders organising, setting up and orchestrating everything that needed to be done. At the end of both sessions, the children were presented with stickers to commemorate their time at The Chantry, stating how brilliant they had been, and with that they departed back to their classrooms, leaving the Young Leaders with some time to catch their breaths. Archery, New Age Kurling and Boccia A group of children entered a competition at Tenbury High School on 11th November. Fourteen pupils learnt to play and score in these matches and some will represent Worcestershire West at the next School Games in March next year.

Sports Hall Athletics On Monday 16th November, children (aged 9-11) came from a range of primary schools to The Chantry to participate in track and field events. We, the young leaders, helped with events like relays, long jump, javelin throw, vertical jump and speed bounce. It was manic, loud and very competitive - but everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves. The children put a lot of effort in and tried their best at everything. In the end, the girls from SCHOOL 1 won and the boys from SCHOOL 2 won. by Izzy Martin, Y10

Dance Festival On 25th of September The Chantry school hosted one of their famous dance festivals. Obviously the young leaders were there helping out. The young leaders went around with each group of Y3/4 children and did 2 stations each with that group. There were 3 stations in total. Cheerleading, Street Dance and Bollywood dancing. At the end of the festival, each group showcased what they had done. It was a very successful event as usual. All of the children (including the Young Leaders) enjoyed it very much. Clover Aps, Y9
