the chesterfield canal in killamarsh

1
The Chesterfield Canal in Killamarsh The Norwood Tunnel collapsed in 1907 and was never repaired so the Derbyshire section of the canal was cut off. In the 1970s and 1980s, British Waterways, which owned the canal, sold off the Derbyshire section. Much of the original route in Killamarsh is now Killamarsh Greenway. 30 houses were built on the line of the canal to the east of the Leisure Centre. When the idea of restoring the canal was suggested, there was a need to find a new route, so Jacobs Babtie was contracted to find possible routes and to consult the townsfolk. The route chosen was down past the Leisure Centre, called Central Line East. In 2012, work started on knocking down and rebuilding the Tarran Bungalows site on the alternative Central Line West route, leaving a wide track that the canal could use. In 2016, engineers checked the levels and found that the chosen route by the Leisure Centre would be about 5 metres deep in a cutting, however the Bungalows route (Central Line West) could be at surface level. In 2017, this new information was put to another consultation and the townsfolk chose the Bungalows route - Central Line West. This will be in the new Local Plan for North East Derbyshire District Council. The new route has two locks before going under Walford Road. It follows Killamarsh Greenway before turning left downhill past the swing park. It then runs west of the old Bungalows site, next to Quarry Lane, under Sheffield Road, past Killamarsh Juniors and then into Nethermoor Lake. Chesterfield Canal Trust is purchasing 241 and 243 Sheffield Road, whilst the vacant plot adjacent to 266 Sheffield Road has been secured against development. Some students on the Masters Engineering course at Nottingham Trent University were asked to come up with suggestions for a Boat Lift instead of having a flight of 6 locks going up from Nethermoor Lake to the original canal line at the back of Primrose Lane. This could be a huge tourism opportunity for Killamarsh. Option 6 - Central Line West Route 6 enters Killamarsh at Old Hall Farm, travels through a residential area before heading northwards along Quarry Road and under Sheffield Road to Rother Valley Country Park. The route then runs south of the existing flood embankment in Rother Valley Country Park, passes along the edge of Moorhouse Farm and locks up to join the original alignment at Norwood. Key Issues - This route runs through the site of Nethermoor House where archaeological remains could be present. - Mature trees potentially used as Bat roosts are located south of Metcalf Avenue, some of which could be lost. Bats are a statutorily protected species. - This route would interupt Barbers Lane footpath. A footbridge could carry pedestrians and cyclists over the canal. - These are several plots of land along this route which could be used for canal related development and hence bring additional jobs and facilities to Killamarsh. - Future redevelopment opportunities could bring this route closer to Bridge Street rather than use Quarry Road. - This route needs to pass under Sheffield Road, Walford Road and Station Road - this could cause disruption to traffic during construction. - This route would bring a large number of visitors into Killamarsh which has advantages and disadvantages. - There is an opportunity to provide a spur up to Bridge Street off this route. - This route runs through both Rother Valley Country Park and close to Killamarsh Town Centre providing the opportunity to link the two and bring benefits to both. Option 6 - Central Line West

Route 6 enters Killamarsh at Old Hall Farm, travels through a residential area before heading northwards along Quarry Road and under Sheffield Road to RotherValley Country Park. The route then runs south of the existing flood embankment in Rother Valley Country Park, passes along the edge of Moorhouse Farm andlocks up to join the original alignment at Norwood.

Key Issues- This route runs through the site of Nethermoor House

where archaeological remains could be present.

- Mature trees potentially used as Bat roosts are located south of Metcalf Avenue, some of which could be lost. Bats are a statutorily protected species.

- This route would interupt Barbers Lane footpath. Afootbridge could carry pedestrians and cyclists over the canal.

- This route runs through both Rother Valley Country Parkand close to Killamarsh Town Centre providing the opportunity to link the two and bring benefits to both.
