Dominion has been given to you by God over everything that exists, but you must consciously take possession of that dominion instead of saying: “Oh, no, this out here has dominion over me.” You have to consciously now come back to the center of your being and realize that, for weeks and months probably, until it becomes automatic. After that… you see, the firstfew months of this study is very difficult. There’s a lot of mental discipline to remember where power is and how power was derived, what real substance is. Every time we’re tempted to think in terms of money and money values, we have to consciously translate it and realize, “No, the power of substance and supply is within me, not within dollar bills, within me.” Ifit was within dollar bills, a dollar bill would always buy the same thing. It doesn’t. Now, let’s realize this: The power of supplyis within me. The consciousness, the soul of me determines my supply, not the dollar bills outside. In every wise, we learn for months and months and months to translate the human belief into the spiritual truth or reality. There’s no getting away from it,and there’s no way of avoiding the responsibility. Nobody can make this demonstration for you. It is possible to go to a practitioner, and because of the practitioner’s realization of this truth, it can change the power of the food over you today or tomorrow or next month, and it can do wonders for you in many ways; but then remember, the time comes when you’re back under your own belief again, under your own conviction, and you’ve got to go about this thing in your own way. No one of us can avoid the responsibility. … Why? Because if you accept the belief that two times two are five, it’s your checkbook that’s going to be wrong, and not all the “Jesus Christs” or “Einsteins” in the world can save it—none.

What is Soul? Soul is our inner receptivity. God the Spirit, God the Soul, God. God as One. But the symbolism of Soulis that it is the receptivity, Spirit, the action. So if you like, you can say that Spirit is symbolic of mankind, man; Soul, symbolicof woman; and when the two come together, it's the Mystical Marriage. That's when we feel that sense of release, that amazing sense of peace. So when we turn within, it's to give our attention, it's our “tithing.” You know that the Children of Israel were taught to tithe. These days, it really means 10%, but in those days, they were taught to give the best of their flock, the very best of their goats, or whichever it was; and you know that Issac was nearly sacrificed as the “best,” you might say, ofthe “flock”. But it was realized that actual sacrificial rights were not necessary. So what did all that mean, “sacrifice”? We're sacrificing every time we go into meditation. We are sacrificing, really, every time we open a spiritual book and read and study. We're sacrificing our humanhood. We're sacrificing the love of human living, joys, all the temptations; the movies. Thatdoesn't mean to say we cannot enjoy lovely things of this life. But when we set aside our time and our attention, we are sacrificing, or we are tithing; and as I said, it doesn't take time, it takes attention.

In the period of my life when I had five part-time jobs, and was raising two boys, and renovating a house, it seemed that time was an issue for me, and that's when I realized that it didn't take time, this giving my attention to God: it took an attitude. So I began to learn to listen as I was busy, and that was my saving, really, wasn't it? Because in the busy-ness of thosejobs, and parenting, and renovating, I was holding to God. In other words, I was giving my attention. So you know what it is, to give your attention to something.

Question: “Would you please define Consciousness as used by you and Joel? What is it, where is it, how do we work with or interact with it?”

Virginia: Of course this whole class has been on this subject so far. Consciousness is the secret word, it is what we really are; I am Conscious Being. Let us close our eyes and use this for a contemplative form of meditation.

I am Conscious Being. Without Consciousness, I have no awareness of Being, of living, of interacting, of moving, of unfolding, so the most Primary Original State of Being is Conscious Awareness, to Be Consciously Aware. Consciousness formed the body, and the body is an extension of awareness, an extension of Consciousness; the eyes, the ears, the brain, the touch, the taste, the smell, are all instruments ofawareness, extensions of awareness; but the eyes do not see, the brain does not think, the eyes do not hear, the nose does not smell, the tongue does not taste, the fingers do not feel, without Consciousness. So Consciousness is the Primal Reality of our Being, and our body is an extension of this Being in the visible world, as a concept. It [the concept] is not the One Infinite Body, but it is the conceptual idea of that One Infinite Body, which I am, and You are; and Consciousness formed this body. The seed, which is in the womb, when that seed is fertilized, Consciousness forms Itself as the blood, the bones, the tissue, the whole design, and the mother takes no thought.

For Meditation: Consciousness functions through the mind, and the mind is just as infinite as all of its formations. To catch anidea of the infinite nature of mind, think of the galaxy in which we live, including our earth. Think of the galaxy, and every form in this galaxy is a mind- formation; so the mind is forming the concept of body according to its illumined state. The more illumined the parents are spiritually, the more beautiful the body. Well, the body expresses that illumination, that beauty, and the capacity, our capacities, are Consciousness, our capacity to be aware is in what is called Soul; and Soul is the Real Body. The body we see is our concept of body, it is the universal material concept of body. Some day when our mind is completely illumined, bodies will completely change, and all [will] become more beautiful, there will be more awareness, because we have accepted into our mind that God is the only creative principle. So our body, really, is a manifestation or an expression of our Soul, which is really never born and never dies; the Soul is never affected by the human experience… . – Virginia

Now, it isn’t possible to explain how it is, that God reveals Himself as Spirit—and that we interpret it in material good, butthere are illustrations which are helpful. In my early writings you will find this notation—that if a tree were to fall in a forest, where no humans were about, no matter how much noise the tree made—there would be no noise there; no matter what noise takes place, where there is no human about—no noise takes place. In other words, the noise is only made—when it comes in contact with a human ear. Without that, there is no noise! This has been questioned many times, but today I received a letter from a student bringing the news from Columbia University, “that it is true, that if a noise is made where there are no humans,the noise cannot be heard because there is no noise.” And it said “because we know this now, we have gone further and we know something else: if there is a chair, a piece of furniture in a room, and no one there to see it—it isn’t there.” It takes the human mind and its eyesight to translate whatever “is there” into what we call a chair—just as it takes the human ear to translate “waves” into sound. In other words God manifest this creation in God’s own way—we interpret it in our way, and weinterpret it in terms of “materiality.” We’ll come to the reason for it in a moment. Now, evidently God is not the author of sound—God is the author of waves, we translate this into sound; God is not the author of a physical chair—evidently this is more waves, which we translate. And of course you know that within this past 30, 40 years, the atomic theory has been disproved “that you can reduce a thing to atoms” now you can split the atoms. So that, really “material atoms do not constitutethis universe” you can go back behind matter and find a spiritual substance, which is the substance of this universe Then there is no use of going to God for matter, there is no use of going to God for good matter, or for abundant matter. There is only one right way to go to God, and that is to go in Spirit and in Truth!

For Meditation: “We live in a world of fear: we fear the weather, we fear climate, we fear bullets, we fear bombs, we fear men, we fear governments, we fear germs we fear the calendar, each day it tells us we’re older. Humanly there isn’t much in the world that we’re not fearing. And there is no way to overcome this fear, except one: and that is to accept God as Spirit, to accept God as omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence; and to agree that no longer do we fear man whose breath is in his nostril, no longer do we fear mortal circumstances or conditions, no longer do we fear what man or conditions can do to me. Because I know there is no evil power; I know that all evil exists only as appearance, as an illusory appearance—based on this universal belief in two powers.” - Joel, From the Recording

Supposing you were dreaming of struggling in the water, and instead of crying out for someone to rescue you, you just had somebody wake you out of the dream? By the breaking up of the dream there would be the breaking up of the you in the water and the water and the struggle. Right? So it is. The fabric of the discords of human experience is a universal hypnotism, a universal belief, or a series of universal beliefs. That’s the fabric of every sense of limitation that can come into your experience whether it’s limited finances or limited health or limited family relations or limited human relations or limited business or discordant experiences—the fabric of it is this universal hypnotism, this universal belief of a universe apart from God. Now when Jesus says, “I have overcome the world,” he did not mean that he had overcome all the people in the world and all the evils of the peoples in the world because his ministry didn’t last long enough to battle all those people. He overcame the world in one stroke, by realizing that the world that needed overcoming was made up of this mesmeric illusion, and all that he had to do was destroy the mesmeric illusion and all the people and all the circumstances and all the conditions of limitation disappeared. Do you follow that?

For Meditation: Every time you are called upon for the solution of a problem, see if there isn’t a person involved in it. You will find there is. And then you will see that since God is the only creative principle, it can’t be the child of God that is involved in it, so it can only be this belief of a selfhood apart from God. See if every problem that comes to you doesn’t come to you as a condition. Can it be a condition of God? No, because it wouldn’t then be a problem. The mere fact that it comes as a condition shows that it is an appearance of a condition which has no real existence, because actually there is neither a person, nor a condition apart from God. And any appearance of such must be a part of what’s called the Adam dream or the mortal dream or the illusory sense of existence or, Jesus called it, “this world.” - Joel, From the Recording For Study: THE HEART OF MYSTICISM, 1957 Infinite Way Letters, Chapter 6

And Joel says, “(To the) human sense, we have incarnated and we will reincarnate. (and) It appears that we are a life within a Life…. as if there were two of us: the one who sits here writing, and the real One, which is intelligence, life, and being of my individual Self…. (my true identity, have never been born)… in my true identity, I have never been born, (and) I will never die,…” - ALTITUDE OF PRAYER, 4

But the human outer sense of us comes and goes. And to me, the way it came to me when I first found The Infinite Way was that it was like an orbit that we’re on. And we come through the visible realm here and we’re seeing and we go on out of it – in it and out of it – and that appears as birth and death, what we call birth and death. But it has nothing, no effect on the person who’s doing it, who’s living in his orbit. But to the others outside, it appears that we come and we go. But that was justthe way it came to me and it helped me to understand it, many years ago.

… Somebody sent me this cartoon a while back. And there are two people sitting in a restaurant – a man and a lady –and they say to the waitress, “Excuse me, Miss. Could we move to another table? We don’t want to sit quite so close to these weird people.” And the waitress says, “I’m afraid you’re stuck with them. That’s a mirror.” [Laughter] I thought that made the whole point about spiritual identity. … it’s whatever you believe. And if you believe that there’s hostages being held on earth somewhere, you’re one. And if you believe that there’s such a thing, or power in such a thing as AIDS, that’s something you have to meet within your own self, as surely as if somebody had asked you for help. If you believe there’s starving people, you’re the one that’s starving. You see, it’s all got to be met within our own self.

It’s one world, and it’s all in our consciousness – in our state of consciousness; there isn’t any separation. Any problem that you accept – that you believe – it’s your problem. Like the man stealing the wallet example: If you see a man stealing a wallet, don’t call him a thief, don’t condemn him. You have to impersonalize it; you have to know who it is.

Well, it’s the same thing with any of these other things. If you see somebody who’s appearing to be a dictator, or ordering thousands of people killed, you don’t blame them personally; it’s not a person. And if you got rid of that one person, there would be another one pop up, because you haven’t got to the roots of it. It’s a belief. It’s a universal belief, and it is true – true for anybody that’s accepting it, not true but it’s how it works out in their experience, or it can.

Just like being a statistic, you accept it, and it can happen to you. If you believe there’s power in disease, it can happen to you. If you believe there’s poor people on the earth, you’re the one that’s poor, or starving, or a hostage, or whatever it is. We have to meet it within our own consciousness: that’s where we have to be clear on it. And then we don’t have any experience of it; we don’t have it coming into our experience. If we have evil persons on earth, they’re going to be in our experience; they can’t be anywhere else.

And the thing is that when we realize it’s God there – there’s nothing there but God – and actually realize it, then these people who were trying… thinking they were doing evil, you see, they aren’t evil and it’s impersonal. And when there’s someone knowing that about this individual, he does things that he didn’t think he… ; he doesn’t do the things he thought he was going to do: the crimes or whatever it is. It stops people, at least from touching you, or hurting you, … in the degree that those in your consciousness are accepting that truth.

It’s the same thing in government: If you’re knowing the truth, that it’s God governing, there will be people who will vote in a different way than they would have. They would have voted according to statistics. Instead, they’ve got God governing their life, because God is the only power, but only where It’s realized. God is no power where It isn’t realized.
