Celebrating Two Queens
They are separated by many miles, many years
and a lifetime of experience, but two queens
shared the festivities in Chudleigh last Sunday.
In celebration of the 90th birthday of HM
Queen Elizabeth II, Chudleigh Cricket Club
hosted a Party in the Park at the Chudleigh Sports
Centre. The rain stayed away, there were stalls,
gazebos, picnics and lots of fun and games.
And during the afternoon, Chloe Martin
was crowned as the 2016 Carnival Queen. As you
can see, it’s going to be a colourful season for
Chloe and her team of attendants. We wish them
every success in the upcoming events and hope to
see the trophy cabinet at the Town Hall filled
once again at the end of the season.
All dressed up and
raring to go:
Carnival Queen,
Chloe Martin and her attendants are
looking forward to
the first carnival of the season in a
couple of weeks’
time.

Local sculptor Angela Holmes, from Pottery
Court, has another exhibition in the pipeline.
This time with a gang of friends, plenty of
colour, pictures & objects to browse or buy
(see poster, right, for details).
If you're free this Saturday afternoon, 18th
June, do join them for the opening with cake
& tea. But otherwise, it is open from 10am to
5pm until 24th June at TAAG in Teignmouth.

From the Editor
Friends of Chudleigh Library from Chairman, Douglas Neely
I had an interesting lesson this
month about not making
assumptions. If anyone had
asked me what was the main
focus of the Gift of Life event on
30th April, I would have said
‘the music’. After all, there
were live acts performing to a
packed street for hours.
And yet, if you read the
report from the junior reporters
in this month’s Children’s
Voice, you will notice a distinct
absence of music from the
event. And when I questioned
this point, I was met with

Fake medicine kills.
No-one is safe.
Regulator Suzanne
Jones’ mission to stop
counterfeiting in Africa
becomes personal. But
her investigations bring
danger ever closer. In
Uganda a factory burns;
Suzanne’s friend goes
missing; and in
Swaziland and Zambia,
children die.
Who is supplying the fake drugs? What is the Eastern
European connection? Can Suzanne stop the counterfeiters
before more people die?
Counterfeit! is the new thriller from Elizabeth Ducie, author
of the prize-winning novel, Gorgito’s Ice Rink
We are delighted to announce that Counterfeit! is now
available to pre-order as an ebook on Amazon. All orders
will be delivered on 19th July.
At just £1.99, it’s cheaper than a cup of coffee and lasts
much longer. Order your copy today by clicking here.
For those of you who prefer your books in print version,
there will be more news next month.
There are a couple of events coming in July and August that I
want to tell you about.
Our Friends Group is involved with the Chudfest Literary
Evening on Wednesday 6th July starting at 7pm. The evening
starts with bestselling and award winning author Veronica Henry,
in conversation with fellow author Fanny Blake. We then
have Ben Collins, the man known as The Stig, and top Racing
Driver, giving us stories from his racing days and also of course
from Top Gear.
Tickets are available from the Chudfest Box Office which
is open every Thursday and Saturday morning on the Town Hall
forecourt. We are also selling tickets in the Library. Our Friends
Group will share in any profit made from this event.
I have also confirmed our next Meet The Author Event in
the Library. We will have the very popular Devon-based author
Marcia Willetts visiting us on Wednesday 17th August. Please
note this will be an afternoon event starting at 2.30pm. I will give
more information about this event nearer the time.
bemusement. The kids hadn’t
even realised it was supposed
to be a music event. The ice
cream had a much bigger
impact on them! A reminder
that we are all different and
different things grab our
attention and interest us.
A n d t a l k i n g o f
differences, if you peruse pages
7 to 12 of this month’s packed
issue, you will see just how
many different events are
available to the good folks of
Chudleigh during the weeks of
Chudfest and Carnival. There’s
music (well, for those that want
it), quizzes and competitions,
comedy, literature, sporting
events, not to mention the
Summer Fete and the Carnival
procession. And you don’t have
to spend a fortune; many of the
events are free. And even those
with an entrance charge are
subsidised to keep the cost a
slow as possible.
So grab your brochures,
check out the website or read
about it all here: a lot of people
have spent a huge amount of
time preparing for this annual
fortnight of festivities: all they
ask in return is lots of people
turning out and having a good
time.
***
I’m going to finish this
month with a bit of self-
indulgence, for which I’m sure
you will forgive me. You may
have noticed the poster, bottom
left, for my new book, written as
Elizabeth Ducie, coming out
next month. We’re going to
throw a big launch party and
invitations will be going out
soon for that. But it is currently
available for pre-order as an
ebook. All the pre-orders are
saved up and fulfilled at the
same day (19th July), so there is
the possibility of seeing it in
Amazon’s best-seller lists, albeit
very briefly.
So, I’m going to ask you
all a couple of favours: if you
are a reader of thrillers with a
Kindle or Kindle app, please
consider ordering a copy.
And if you don’t read
thrillers, I’m sure many of your
friends might. So please, help me
spread the word by telling your
friends, family, the milkman,
strangers you happen to be
talking to—anyone really—that
one of your local authors has
another book out. (Begging is so
undignified; I’m going to shut up
now!)

On 30th April, there was a Gift of Life Festival just outside of
the Bishop Lacey, to raise money for cystic fibrosis.
Many things happened at this festival; some of the best
were...
A group of people walked all the way from Torbay Hospi-
tal pushing a bed with wheels and carrying a stretcher, They
were also dressed as nurses. A big thank you to all those people.
The Bishop Lacey opened up their new ice cream parlour
that has the most amazing ice
creams.
Chudleigh Community Primary
School did 2 activities which
were country dancing and samba
band; both were brilliant.
Thank you to everyone who took
part. It was an amazing day and
raised lots of money for charity.

Have you read the
classic book? Have
you seen the Disney
film? Have you got the
bare necessities,
those simple bare
necessities of life?
The Jungle
Book is a classic must
read/watch; a great
family novel/film and loved by all. But Disney have taken a shot
at revamping the classic 1967 film. This new film gives a whole
new air to the happy musical we all know. Thankfully, the new
changes haven’t ruined the loved characters Mowgli (the man
cub), Baloo and Bagheera; unfortunately, Shere Khan is still on
set, with more menace and a hunger for vengeance than ever
before.
Prepare yourselves, ladies and gentlemen, for a howler
of a trip to your local cinema...

The talk on 20th May was given by Eddie Stevenson from the
Teignmouth branch of the National Coastal Watch Institution. It
was founded at Bass Point on The Lizard in 1994 and has since
grown to 50 centres manned by around 2000 volunteer watchers.
Watchers are highly trained in, amongst other things,
vessel identification, use of charts, describing weather
conditions, and use of radios. “Spot, plot and report” is what
they do and they report to the Coastguard who then takes the
appropriate action. What they are mainly concerned with is
identifying and helping vulnerable vessels and individuals both
at sea and on the coast.
Our next talk, “Devon’s Torre Abbey “ is on 17th June
and will be given by Dr Michael Rhodes who was curator of the
Abbey for almost two decades. Thereafter, there will be a break
during July and August with the next talk, “Birds in your
garden”, being on 16th September.
CADAS closely scrutinizes planning applications
particularly those in our Conservation Area where some of the
developments have been less than sympathetic. Last month, we
reported on 1, The Square where the owner has appealed to the
Planning Inspectorate in Bristol. We understand that an inspec-
tor will be visiting the site before a decision is made.

Chudleigh Rotters Update
Saturday 4th June was work session time down on the
Chudleigh Rotters' site next to the RC cemetery and was blessed
with good weather and an excellent team of keen people who
soon got down to 'muck in'! Nigel worked wonders standing in
the bays moving compost from Bay 2 to Bay 3, compost from
Bay 1 to Bay 2 to aid the process of composting by aerating the
compost ably helped by Anne, and then they both loaded the
donation pile into Bay 1 to start its journey through the bins.
Meanwhile Nick and Mike set up the sieve and sieved at
least 50% of Bay 5 producing nearly 40 bags of wonderful
compost; this was a start-stop process as the sieve is showing
signs of wear-and-tear [i.e. years of use!]. Nick kindly rushed
home and returned with the necessary fencing staples and
hammer to repair the sieve thankfully.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the morning together in true
community spirit—partly marred by my first forgetting the
coffee and tea supplies [though I had remembered the hot wa-
ter!] and then realising I hadn't brought milk, but black tea or
coffee and shortbread biscuits with a good natter were all
enjoyed in the sunshine!
Liz came along and purchased many bags of compost,
and Anne purchased some too, but there are plenty of bags
available to members [50% discount!].
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT AND CANNOT
ACCEPT TREE BRANCHES ETC WHICH SOMEONE HAS
LEFT. WHOEVER IS RESPONSIBLE, WE WOULD BE
GRATEFUL IF THEY COULD KINDLY REMOVE THESE
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Next session will be as usual on the first Saturdayof the
month, on 2nd July from 10-12noon, and anyone is welcome to
come along"

Mr Pesto Recommends with Michael McCormick
Chudleigh has a variety of places to get food, either
on-site or as takeaway. We have pub grub at Bishop
Lacey, now including takeaway in their offering—good
luck, Robin and Wendy—and The Highwayman’s Haunt,
under new management. There are two well-established
cafes offering sit-down or takeaway; Harveys and Pottery
Court. Takeaway can be had at Sangers, Mei Wah,
Chudleigh Chippy and Rominoss. Additionally there is
The Phoenix Chudleigh offering breakfast, coffee and
cake, lunch and dinner. However from 1st to 10th July
there will be a new place to eat: Chudfest.
During the Summer Festival, many of the events
offer food, and as many local providers as possible are
involved. During the Open Gardens weekend, several of
the venues will be providing refreshments. On Saturday
2nd July you will be able to relax with a cream tea in the
Church. Chudleigh Kitchen, which provides catering for
not-for profit events, will be supplying the supper for The
Beach Party, Ploughman’s for the 60s/70s Disco, and
BBQ for the Fête. The Fête will also have tea and cake
courtesy of the Scouts; candyfloss, and.ice cream. Harveys
will provide lunch and supper at the Literary Festival and
food at Hits from the Blitz. Quiz night cheese and pickle
is provided by Chudfest.
What a wonderful place Chudleigh is for food; the
retailers deserve our support. But don’t forget Chudfest:
entertainment and food for the community!
Normal service will be resumed next month. Katherine Johans is fundraising for an expedition of a life time to
Malaysia and Borneo in July 2017 . She is looking for more
Auction lot donations, so if there are any businesses or members
of the public out there that could help please contact Paula at the
Town Hall on 01626824759 or [email protected]
Town Councillor and former Mayor, Chris Webb is
a staunch supporter of vulnerable young people and
each year, he finds a novel way to fund-raise. This
year he will be spending two nights, Monday4th and
Tuesday 5th July, sleeping rough under the stair-
way at Chudleigh Town Hall.
The sleep-out will be in aid of the Chud-
leigh Youth Centre and the Teignbridge Homeless
Action Today, a charity based in Newton Abbot.
Chris says: ‘Many people are currently sleeping on the streets
in Teignbridge for many reasons. This includes young people, so I
see a link between Youth Centres and this charity for the Homeless’.
You can find sponsorship forms at the Chudfest Box Office
and in Harveys. Bill Keen and Sue Metcalf both have copies. You
can pop in to T.H.A.T Charity Office, which is at 8 Queensway
House, Queensway, Buckland Newton Abbot and opens between
10am and 1pm weekdays. Or contact Chris on 07968508451.
Chris, good luck; we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it
doesn’t rain on you.

Town Hall improvements
The kitchen attached to the Large Hall has been replaced; this means
all three kitchens in the Town Hall have been refurbished over the last
two years.
The lighting in the Large Hall has also been replaced. The
previous light fittings were so old, it was no longer possible to source
fluorescent tubes that fitted them. The lighting in the school room has
been upgraded to new LED fittings, resulting in markedly improved
light levels in that room.
Planning permission is awaited to put photovoltaic panels on
the roof of the Woodway Room; it is hoped to have them in place by
the end of summer
Planning consent has also been requested to place a
defibrillator on the exterior of the Town Hall. It will be situated in the
alcove beneath the fire escape, thus keeping the defibrillator out of
direct sunlight; if the temperature within the case exceeds 50 degrees,
it can damage the kit.
Signage will soon appear in the parking bays on the forecourt
that make clear that parking is for town hall users only. This is not
meant to discourage hirers or their customers from parking on the
forecourt. Its aim is to try and reduce the number of cars parked on the
forecourt whilst occupants do their shopping.
Vandalism problems
Over the last couple of weeks there have been some vandal-
ism problems – the first in some time. Firstly two refuse bins
were kicked into oblivion at the skate park. The cost of
replacing them was £374, money that could have been spent
elsewhere. The second problem was at Fore Street park where
vandals attacked the pagoda: various wooden pegs and shin-
gles have been removed and other pieces of timber torn off.
Given the bespoke nature of the construction the original
contractors will need to carry out the repairs. They are not
local, so it may take a few weeks for the repairs to be carried
out. We don’t yet know how much this will cost.
If you witness any vandalism in the town please
inform the police using the 101 call facility. Alternatively,
contact the Town Hall staff, providing as much information
as you have. If it is known roughly when the vandalism took
place there is some hope of identifying the offenders from
CCTV footage.
South West Water: Sewerage improvement works in
Chudleigh
EU directives require SWW to improve water quality on
shellfish estuaries, of which the Teign is one. Chudleigh is an
area where they can make a significant improvement to water
quality, because much of the sewerage network in the middle
of the town is old and has shared use for both sewage and
rainwater run-off. When there is heavy rain, the overflow
procedures cause untreated sewage to enter the Teign.
The shared sewerage pipes are primarily at the top
part of Fore Street, Old Exeter Street, New Exeter Street and
Woodway Street. SWW plan to lay new foul water drainage
pipes, to separated it from the rainwater run-off pipes. Once
the work is done the incidents of sewage entering the Teign is
anticipated to be reduced by 30%. It is also likely to reduce
the incidents of basements in Fore Street being flooded.
SWW are legislatively required to carry out this work
within the next two financial years. The work is likely to take
around 20 weeks but will be phased to minimise disruption.
Councillors have asked that when the work is taking place
"business as usual" signage is erected to assist the retailers.
There is also a plan to introduce what are called "rain
gardens", where concrete is replaced with porous planted
areas. This is a concept introduced by Welsh Water, with
significant success, and SWW propose to do something
similar in New Exeter Street using the areas at the end of
parking bays.
You can find the PowerPoint presentation delivered
by SWW on the Town Hall website. If you don’t have web-
site access and would like a hard copy, contact Town Hall
staff.
Exeter Road allotments:
The Council has agreed to spend £2,000 to expand the
parking facilities at the Exeter Road allotments, although
resurfacing the entrance track is outside this year’s budget
and will probably have to wait for next year. The work on the
parking area will take place at some point during the summer
