A Note From Unbound ProductionsThe10th annual fall production of Wicked Lit includes something old and something new. One half of this production is The Chimes: A Goblin Story, which was one of the rst Wicked Lit plays that Unbound ever produced. At that time we were still in the early days of nding an identity for the project and guring out how this “theatre company thing” even worked. The second half of this year’s fall show is Teig O’Kane and the Corpse, a lovely, harrowing play that is receiving its world premiere.

Such are the wonders of having a rich history to pull from, inspirational new pieces to cultivate, and hungry audiences who are willing to follow us along the way! Thank you for being part of that intrepid, adventurous group of theatre-goers and immersive event-lovers who have followed us from a haunting mansion to an expansive mausoleum to a gorgeous museum to an adventurous train station and back again!

Since 2010, Wicked Lit has been in residence here at Mountain View Mausoleum in Altadena, and since 2013, we’ve sold out every ticket for every performance of our annual fall production. Our autumnal show is regularly included on lists of “Top Theatre Events” and/or “Best Halloween Events of the Year” from the likes of Time Out Los Angeles, LA Magazine, Thrillist and others; our plays have moved on from Unbound to be produced at schools just up the street (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow will be produced at Eliot Arts Magnet Academy at the end of October!), caverns in Indiana, and theatres throughout the United States as well as England, Scotland, and Cameroon. We’ve just published our second nine-play anthology with Steele Spring Stage Rights after having produced 35 world premiere plays in our history.

And all of this from a few guys sitting around in a living room one day, wondering what might happen if we started a theatre company. Ten years - who knew?

Enjoy the plays! Enjoy Wicked Lit. Have fun.

Best,

Paul Millet & Jonathan JosephsonWicked Lit producers

P.S. On a bittersweet note, this production is the rst Unbound event to be produced without the tremendous talents of company co-founder Je G. Rack. Je stepped away from Unbound at the end of last year to pursue some exciting projects, a few of which are taking place at the Whitere Theatre this fall. We wish Je the best of luck with his endeavors, and encourage Wicked Lit lovers to checkout what he has cooking out in Sherman Oaks!

A Celebration of Life a note from Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm, Tieg O’Kane and the Corpse playwright

At twenty-two years old, I was sharing an apartment in NYC with my cousin, Lancelee. He was going to school for music, and there was no denying he was passionate about his chosen craft. That Thanksgiving, we went to visit family in Upstate New York. After we got to his parents’ place, he decided to take a quick drive to grab a coee. On the road, his car hit black ice, ipping over and killing him instantly.

There is no sound like the wail of a mother receiving the call to tell her that her only son is dead. That agony lived in her heart for a long time. All of us who knew him carried some version of our own rage and utter disbelief over his death inside of us. And at rst, it didn’t seem like it would ever let up.

Lancelee was not religious, so the focus of his service was on what had always been his real religion: music. The service ended with all of us in attendance, no matter our skill level, grabbing an instrument and playing - channeling our sorrow through the medium that made Lancelee feel most alive. In that moment, we started our slow – very slow - journeys towards celebrating his life rather than raging over his death.

That celebration of life is what I have always loved most about Irish wakes – and was excited to explore when I rst considered adapting Ernest Rhys “Teig O’Kane and the Corpse.” Here’s this corpse who is literally holding onto the living. I wanted to take that idea and use it to explore the joy and humor that can be found in the struggle to let go – in this case, both guratively and literally. I hope you enjoy this journey as much as I have.

Dear, Dear Mr. Dickens a note from Jonathan Josephson, The Chimes: a Goblin Story playwright

Mr. Dickens is one of the true masters of English literature, and I’m personally an enormous fan of his work (I have adapted four of his short stories into plays – at his best his prose is unquestionally brilliant). With that said, there is a reason that “The Chimes: a Goblin Story” never ascended to the literary acclaim of “A Christmas Carol,” “A Tale of Two Cities” nor any number of other beloved works by the celebrated author. The novella that this play is based upon, simply put, is a tough ippin’ read.

There are many characters who come in and out of the piece with seemingly little or nothing to do with the core story, and there’s more than one multi-page tangent that is more confusing rhetoric than anything to do with the plot. As playwright and adaptor it was my goal to streamline the core story of the novella in order to create a dramatic and theatrically-paced experience. The core story, the characters, the themes and much of the dialogue are wonderful – I saw it as my responsibility to allow these aspects of Dickens’ work to shine. I was also eager to engage with the mind of our protagonist Toby Veck – the angry, poor, middle-aged man facing the optimism of his daughter and potentially nding himself on the wrong side of history. I was also enamored by the presence of the at-once spooky but ultimately well-intentioned goblins, who play an interesting role in story; generally, the theme of “looks can be deceiving” was surprising and fun.

Our MissionUUnbound Productions reimagines timeless stories for new audiences

by creating immersive, theatrical adaptations of literature.

About Wicked LitThe scope of Wicked Lit is to create and produce new stage plays based on classic horror

literature. Thirty-four new Wicked Lit plays have been produced since 2008 including adaptations of works by Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Mark Twain, M.R. James, Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Washington Irving, and many others. Wicked Lit was

launched in 2009 at the haunted Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, and for the last eight years has been produced for sold-out audiences right here at Mountain View Mausoleum and Cemetery. Special installations of Wicked Lit have been produced at the Millennium-

Biltmore Hotel in conjunction with the Theatre Communications Group National Conference, ScareLA, and inside Strub Mansion at the Mayeld Senior School.
