The August 21, 2018 meeting was

called to order by President Dwight

    Schaeper at 7:06pm, approximately

    44 people were in attendance.

    Reports:

Call for Artwork at Austin city hall

was brought up by Suzi Parker,

Dwight will forward info via email

and we can discuss at the next meet-

ing if we would like to be involved.

    Johnny Tolly reminded about Senior

    Pen Turning for those graduating

seniors who missed the May turning

    on August 31.

Drew needs turning for the Texas

    Tree Conference Auction please

bring any donations to the Septem-

    ber meeting. The Georgetown city

arborist gives Drew (us) a lot of

wood during the year, so we need to

    give back.

    August Demo

The August demo was a wonderful

    presentation of pyrography by Herb

Ingram, if you have ever picked up

one of Herb’s bowls and turned it

over, you can’t help but marvel over

the burned images. Herb gave us

some insight on how to burn tree

images on to the back. Every bowl

no matter what kind of wood will

have an image of a tree the wood

came from. Herb made it look very

simple, maybe for him it is! He will

go to the internet and download a

line drawing of the type of tree and

then makes his rendition burned on

the bowl bottom. Herb uses a Burn-

master burner and makes most of his

    own tips.

The burned images on the bowl bot-

tom gives an extra personal touch

for anyone who purchases one of his

    turnings. Once burned Herb will

clean the surface with a brush and

denatured alcohol. Herb likes to use

his brew for his bowl finish (2 parts

Mylans and 1 part Denatured Alco-

hol). Herb also touched on different

woods and which ones burn well

    and others that don’t.

When you pick up one of Herbs

bowl’s make sure to look at the bot-

    tom!

We welcome NEW MEMBERS to join our

band of merry turners anytime. An interest

    bership.

With your membership, whether you are

experienced or a novice, we will teach you,

or woman as the case may be.

First of all I’d like to say I’ve lived in

Texas 7 years and have made it to

SWAT five of those years and it is a

highlight for me every year to go, while

I know many of you have gone many

more than me I am luckier than those

who missed it. Our club is so very lucky

and if it was not for the hard work of

many of the members SWAT would

have a hard time being as great as it is.

Starting at the top Clyde Little the out-

going president did an outstanding job

leading SWAT, and what about Pat Lit-

tle once again selling more raffle tickets

than anyone else, yes they make a great

team. Then there are the Tolly’s all 100

of them, including Johnny, Marcia, son

Johnny, grand children J.J and Sophia

also Jimmy and his grandson Andrew, I

know they must have had clones too.

The many volunteers from our club who

sold tickets, hosted our room, shot vid-

eos, helped move in vendors, tables,

chairs and then to tear it all down after

the show. I applaud all of you and we all

are proud of you! Last on my list is

    Craig Timmerman, WOW every demo

Craig did was standing room only! Next

time I hope they book him into one of

the larger rooms. As most of us know

Craig is an outstanding turner and dem-

onstrator. His demos were easy to

understand and follow, Great Job Craig.

We are lucky to have him in our club to

    demo for us.

This year day one I attended these

    demos-Dan Tilden “Exploring Natural

Edge Design”, Dan is a young 31 yr. old

turner from Oregon, he approaches his

turnings by trying to keep as much of

the figured wood as possible to enjoy its

beauty. He had some nice pieces in the

gallery. Next up was Stuart Batty “Per-

fecting the Art of Cutting, Stuart is a

    showman and a great demonstrator

(couldn’t get into to Craig’s demo as the

room was full!). Third demo was Jerry

    DeGroot “Hollow Christmas Orna-

ments” Jerry did a fun demo and comes

to us from the Hill country and no he is

not Rebecca DeGroot’s father. This was

all followed by the Cajun dinner,

hmmm enough said about that. The Fri-

day night turnoff Stuart Batty the master

    vs. Ashley Hardwood his apprentice

who would win? Great show and fun

night and in the middle of the turnoff a

    dance competition (Ashley won that

with ease). After about 22 minutes of

neck and neck action Ashley beat Stuart

by 11 seconds. Yes the master was

    taken down.

Day two the Zenrichs “Eccentric Jew-

    elry Pendants” very informative gave

out some good ideas and yes they are

eccentric too. Second up Damn no seats

to see Craig! So Zac Higgins, Mr.

    Dunkin Junk “Casting resin Pen

Blanks” I’ve known Zac for a couple

years and watch him on YouTube regu-

larly. He is a wealth of info when it

comes to resin casting; it was a good

demo for anyone wanting to get into

    casting. After lunch Ashley Harwood

“Rim and Foot Design on a bowl, this

was a good presentation with many

    highlighted bowls that Ashley turned.

Last demo for the Craig, nope full

again! So it was Jim Burt “Vases from

Triple Crotches”. Sitting next to Drew

we both were waiting for the worst to

happen on this demo, I think we both

cringed at the same time on a few occa-

sions. After seeing many great demos

and in every turning demo the demon-

strator always sharpened for the last cut.

I never saw Jim sharpen his tools during

the whole demo which in itself was a lit-

    tle scary.

    Day three something different Toni

Ransfield “Polymer Clay from start to

finish”, had to see why those pen blanks

are so expensive. Ok I will not ever

make my own clay pen blanks, but they

are amazing. This lady loves what she

does and it shows, I’m sure it’s fun they

are beautiful but no not for me to do.

Demo was worth the time to see.

Want to see a taste of SWAT look up

Worthffort, he does about half hour

video tour of SWAT and is fun to

watch, if you watch you will see many

of us in the background of his video. He

    also highlighted Craig’s work and

    Joseph Schoenfeld’s Burl Platter. Billy

Burt has an overview video on You-

    Tube too.
