Inourhouseitisclearthatallmenarenotcreatedequal.Infact,theself-evidenttruthssuggestverystronglyotherwise.

Thiswasdrivenhometomyyoungestdaughterandmeaswewatchedherphysicspro-fessorlectureoncomputermemory.Weliketheprofessoragreatdealandhavelearnedalotinthiscourse,butitisquiteobviousthathismindandourmindsarenowherenearequal.

Recentlywelistenedinaweashediscussedflip-flopsemiconductormemoryandexplainedhislogicalNORgatecircuitchart.Butwejustcouldn’thelpit.Ashewentoverthechart—andrapidlyoverourheads—thetwoofuslookedatthediagramanddiscussedhowwe’dcoloritin.

Wewon’tbeapplyingforasciencescholarship.Yourchildrenaren’tequaleither.Thatrealizationmightmakeyoupanicabitatfirst,

butintheenditshouldbeliberating.Sincethisissueisdevotedtopreschoolandhome-schoolersjuststartingout,letmesaytwothingsclearly.ThefirstisthatitisimportanttogiveyourchildrenthefreedomtobethepeopleGodmadethemtobe.Yes,youneedtoexposethemtoeverysubject,but,justasyoucan’t—and shouldn’t want or expect to—turnwillowtreesintooaks,youcan’tforceyourartisticchildrentobecomemathematicalge-niuses(ortheotherwayaround).

Thesecondthingisthatwe’redealingwithpreschoolhere.Youdon’thavetostartwithalltheinformationyourchildrenwilleverneedtoknowinlife.Itisimportanttorememberthat“pre”means“before.”Preschoolchildrenarenotinschoolyet.Thisisthetimetoplaywithyourkids,readtothem,takethemonfieldtrips,andteachthemskillsathome.Youdon’tneedacurriculuminordertoteachcolors—goforwalksinyourgardenandpointthemout.Youdon’tneedacurriculuminordertoteachcounting—takeyourkidsgroceryshoppingandcounttheitemsinyourcart.Youdon’tneedacurriculuminordertoteachmeasuring—bakecookiestogether.Youdon’tneedacurriculuminordertoteachmatching—sortsocksfromthecleanlaundry.Youdon’tneedacurriculuminordertoteachshapes—goonashapehuntthroughtheroomsinyourhouse.

Whatyouneedinsteadisaguide,andourgoalistoprovidethatforyouherewithideasforactivities,resources,andskillsthatwillhelpprepareyourchildrenforkindergarten.Afterall,oneofthewonderfulbenefitsofhomeschoolingisflexibilityandthechancetotailoryourprogramtoyourownchildren.Sorelaxandjustenjoyyourkids.Youcanbeassuredthattheyaregoingtopickuptheskillstheyneed.Rememberthattheseskillsarelikepottytraining:bythetimeyourchildrengettocollege,noonewillcarehowoldtheywerewhentheymasteredthem!

I ’vehadmanyyoungmothersoftwo-,three-,andfour-year-oldchildrenaskwhattheyshouldbedoingtohomeschooltheirpre-schoolers.Whatcurriculumshouldtheyuse?Whenshouldthey

beginareadingprogram?Whatarethebestmathprograms?Myansweristhis:Youdon’thavetoworryaboutallofthatyet.Whileacademicsubjectswillbeimportantlateron,preparationiswhatisimportantduringthepreschoolyears.

Becauseyou’renotdoingaformalacademicprogram,don’tthinkforaminuteyou’renotteachingyourchild.Whenyourchildisexperi-encingsomethingnewwithyou,you’reteachinghim.Youdon’tneedtoconsultan“expert.”Youaretheexpert—you’retheparent.

Nordoyouneedtosendhimtoaformalpreschoolwithaplaykitchenanddress-upclothes.Youhavethe“realdeal”inyourhome!

Homeschoolingpreschoolisjustacontinuationofwhatyou’veal-readybeendoing.Bythepreschoolage,yourchildhasalreadylearnedtowalkandtalk,gopotty,feedhimself,getdressed,andfollowyourdirection—todifferentdegrees.He’sinquisitive,fullofenergy,readytomasternewskills,andeagertolearn.Howhashereachedthisnew,somewhat-independentstagesoquickly?You’vetaughthimdayafterday!Nowthathe’sapreschooler,justkeepupthegoodwork!

The path to kindergarten readiness is often messy and clut-tered,butyoucanbesurevaluablelearningistakingplace.You’reteachinghimwhenhethrowsorcatchesaballorhelpsyouinthekitchenbymeasuringingredientsandstirringthecakebatter.Evenemptyingakitchencabinetwhileyoudothedishes isa learningactivity(andmaybeanexercise inpatienceforyou!).Thesetaskshelpachilddevelopimportant largemotorskills.Byhearingthesamebooksagainandagainbeforebedtime,childrenarelearningauditorydiscrimination,buildingvocabulary,andincreasingverbal

expression.Whentheyputtogetherwoodenpuzzlesorbegintocutpaperorcolor,they’relearningvisualdiscriminationandexercisingfinemotorskills.Alloftheseactivitieshelpachilddevelopimpor-tantpre-readingskillsthatneedtobemasteredbeforeformalaca-demicinstructionbegins.Youdon’tneedtopurchaseapreschoolcurriculuminorderforyourchildtomastertheseskills.

Homeschool pioneers Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moorestated inoneof their early books that a child’s play is hiswork.Whenchildrenplay,theyarecreativelyusingtheirmindsandnew-lydevelopingphysical skills to increase their ability to thinkandreason.Throughmovementandplay,therightandleftbrainareformingimportantneurologicalconnectionsthatwillbecometheearlypathwaysforsuccessfulreadingandwriting.Playisimportant.Moveintomorestructuredactivitiesgradually.

Whenyoufeelyourchildisreadyforsomethingnew,youcannaturallytransitionfrompuzzlesandPlay-Dohtoflashcardswithshapesandcolors.Graduallyincorporatecountingandthealphabetintoyour child’splay time.Keep it fun, simple, and short.Apre-schooler’sattentionspanisverylimited.Ifhebecomesfrustrated,heislettingyouknowthatyou’redoingtoomuch.Don’tbepressuredby other moms or book sellers to begin “academics” before yourchildisready.Academicreadinessisasimportantasacademics.

Godhasgivenyoutheresponsibilityandtheabilitytoteachyourchild.Youcandoit!Butenjoythepreschoolyears;don’trushthem. Take time to “be” with your child. The dishes can wait;thelaundrywillbetheretomorrow.Agoodfoundationforlearn-ingduringthepreschoolyearswillmakeasmoothtransitionintokindergarten.Remember,you’realreadyhomeschoolingyourpre-schooler.It’scalledgoodparenting.

BIrtH DAtES not rEquIrED By lAwAfter filing a Notice of Intent, several parents reported that

their school superintendents responded by letter or phone sayingtheywouldnot“approve”theirNOIor“considertheirrequesttohomeschool”untilbirth-dateinformationwasreceived.Somesuper-intendentsinsistedonhavingbothbirthdatesandgradelevels.Theirresponseexceedstherequirementsofthelawinseveralways.

First,thehomeschoollawdoesnotgiveasuperintendentau-thorityto“approve”or“considerarequest”tohomeschool.WhenfilingaNoticeofIntent,parentsareNOTaskingforapprovalorre-questingpermissiontohomeschool.ParentsareNOTIFYINGthesuperintendentthattheyhavecompliedwithoneofthefourwaysthelawindicatesparentscaneducatetheirchildrenathome.

Second, the Virginia homeschool law (§22.1-254.1) DOESNOTrequireparentstodisclosethebirthdatesorthegradelevelsoftheirchildreninordertohomeschool.Anameandbirthdatecanbeusedasidentifiabletrackinginformation.Ratherthanabirthdate,aparentcanprovideachild’sage.Thisindicateswhetherornotachildisundercompulsoryattendancelaws.Sincethehomeschoolstatutedoesnotrequireparentstoprovidebirthdateorgradeinformation,thereislittlethesuperintendentcandotogaincompliancewithhisrequest.Hecanask;however,thelawdoesnotbackhimup.

Because school superintendents and their designees are accus-tomedtohavingbirthdatesforpublicschoolstudents,somethinktheymusthavethesameinformationforhomeschooledstudentsaswell.Toaddtotheconfusion,thesampleNoticeofIntentformfoundontheDepartmentofEducation’swebsiteincludesaplaceforbirthdates.Again,accordingtothehomeschoollaw,thisisnotrequired.

Someparentsmaybeintimidatedbyaphonecallorletterfromthesuperintendent’sofficeandquicklysupplytherequested infor-mation for fear of jeopardizing their right to homeschool. Please consider the implications of providing more information than is legally required.Ifenoughparentscomply,wecanexpectfuturere-questsforadditionalinformation—suchassocialsecuritynumbers,parentincomeoremploymentinformation,disciplinemethods,etc.

Lawsaremadetoprotectcitizensandlimitwhatgovernmentcando.Whilehomeschoolingparentsdon’twanttocreateunnec-essaryproblemsorcontroversyforthemselves,theymuststandupfor their rights.Weallwant topromotegoodwillwith those inauthority,butgoodwill isfosteredwhenbothpartieslivewithintheparameterssetbythelaw.

Inmid-August,MATHCOUNTSannouncedabanonhome-schoolingteams.Thiswasinspiteofthefactthathomeschoolteamshadbeenallowed tocompete for thepast twentyyears.MATH-COUNTScreatesafunwaytogetmiddleschoolstudentsinvolvedinmath,andHomeSchoolLegalDefenseAssociation(HSLDA),aswellasmanyhomeschoolers,contactedMATHCOUNTStoex-pressconcernsaboutthenewpolicy.MATHCOUNTSagreedtoa temporarychange inpolicy thatallowshomeschool teamswhoparticipated in last year’s competition to be allowed to competeagain inthisyear’sprogram.While this revisedpolicydoes limitsome homeschoolers, MATHCOUNTS has committed to workwithHSLDAtofindalong-termsolutiontothisproblem.

afterthechildrencome,tellthemwhattheyneed to do—don’t give them commandsfromanotherroom.Thisensuresyouhavetheirfullattention.Asthechildrengetold-er,havethemrepeatthecommandback.

Babiesareborndemanding!Ittakescon-sistent,daily trainingwithpurpose toyielda peaceful home. You will have short-termgoalsand long-termpurposes,andtrainingforthoserequiresagreatamountoftimeandrepetition.Itoftenhappensinthelittlemo-ments.Withtoddlers,issuesfortrainingarethings like potty training and eliminatingpickyeating,whining,screaming,andcling-ing.Setprioritiesandonlyworkononegoalatatime.Rememberthatduringthetoddleryears,we’redealingwith external behavior.Theywon’t understandmercywithout firstunderstandingjustice,anditisn’tuntillaterthattheinternaldesiretopleasewillcome.

Butyieldingapeacefulhomealsotakesflexibility.Learn to livewitha littlebitofmess.Don’tsetupstandardsofperfectionforeitheryourselforyourchildren.Catchyourselfandyourreactiontoyourchildren’smissteps,andhumbleyourselfbeforeyourkidswhenyourresponsetothemissinful.Nothingismorevaluablethanbuildingre-lationshipswithyourkids.Angercanbearedflagthatyourstandardsaretoohigh.

IIn the whole scheme of things, toddleryearsareveryshort.Butthesearetheyearswhen the most aggressive training shouldtakeplaceandtheonesthatshouldproducethemostfruit.

Training in theseyearsyieldsbenefitsintheschoolyears.Eventhoughittakesalotofenergy,weneedtoconditionchildrentorighthabitswhenthey’reyoung.

Weneedtotrainyoungchildrentosay“no”tofleshlyimpulsesandnegativeemo-tions. Haveyourpreschoolchildrenhelpwiththehousework.Dochoresa littleata timebetweenschooltimeandyourtimewiththem.Toddlersdelightinenteringyourworldtohelpwithchores.Eventheyoungestcandosimplechoressuchashelpingemptythedishwasherorplacingthepillowbackonthebedafteryou’vemadeit.Maintainthenecessaryroutinestoaccomplishthesechores.Useachorechartandmakechildrenaccountable,remindingthemthatworkisagift—itwasintheGardenofEdenbeforetherewassin.Workisawaytouseourenergy,managetime,learntofollowau-thority, and learn togetalongwithothers.Asyourchildrengetolder,don’tpayallowanceforchoresthataretheirpartofhelpingthefamily;instead,payonlyforextrajobs.

Preschoolchildrenhavea lotofenergytogetouteveryday.After lunch is a good time for high-energy activity. Then settledowngraduallywithabookandanap.

tEACH your CHIlD BounDArIESDuringyourschooltimewitholderchildren,thejobofpreschool

childrenistobecooperative.Dividetheirtoysintocategories—whattheycandoaloneandwhatrequireshelp.Alone-timetoysandbooksareonlygivenduringthistime.Divideyourroomintosections,andhaveeachtoddlerandpreschoolchildplayalonewithtwotothreetoys ina specified section. Indicate theboundaries that theymustnotleaveandthatnootherchildmayenter.Thistimealonehelpschildrenlearnfocusandself-controlinincreasingamountsoftime.Eventuallythisskillleadstochildrenbeingabletoandlovingtolearnontheirown—askilltheyneedinhighschoolandcollege!

Make lists of other activity ideas your toddler or preschoolchildwillneedhelpwith(suchaspuzzles,books,andshape-sort-ing),anddothoseduringyourtimewiththemoranolderchild’stime with them. You are asking for problems, frustration, andburnoutifyoupairyoungchildrenwithyoungchildrenandexpectthemtoplay.Theydon’tknowhowtogetalongorshareyet.Whenmultipletoddlersandpreschoolchildrenaretogether,aparentorolderchildneedstobewiththemtodirecttheirplayandhelpthemlearntoworkthingsout.

Sometimes,nomatterhowwellyou’veplanned,thedaydoesn’tgowell.Whenyouhaveanunusuallybadday,giveitupanddoac-tivitiestogetherasafamily.

Finally,itisveryhelpfultofindamentorwhoenjoyedthebusynessofthetoddlerandpreschoolyears.Callherwhenyouneedadviceorhelptotemperabadresponsetoyourchildren.Withhelp,aroutine,flexibility,andunderstanding,youcanenjoytheseyearstoo.

Preschoolersareverycuriousabouttheirworld.Theyaretryingtounderstanditandlearnmoreaboutit.Theyarebeginningtounderstandpeople.Theyarelearningabouttheirownfeelingsandthefeelingsofthe people around them. They are learning how toexpress their feelings,howtohandlethem,andwhyotherpeople’sfeelingsareimportant.Theyarelearn-ingtohaveself-disciplineandtotesttheirworld,makedecisions,andrelatetoothersinplay.Childrenlearntomastertheseskills—andmanymore—whentheyplay.

DISCoVEry lEArnIngIn purposeful play, children are learning to

think. They are organizing ideas, talking, solvingproblems, trying new ways, repeating what works,andchallengingthemselves.Theyaremakingfriendsby doing things together. Children at play are notwaitingtobeentertained.Theyarediscoveringthattheypossessthesourceforfindingjoy,achievement,and happiness. Children need to have fun and tolearnhowtocreatethatfun.

Theirbodiesaredeveloping,too.Withlarge-andsmall-muscleactivities,childrendevelopbasicphysicalabilitiesandfundamentalmovementpatternsthatbuildmorerefinedandmaturepatternslater.Astheydeveloplarge-musclecoordination,small-musclecoordinationwill follow. By going outside to play, children get asenseof freedom.Theyhaveachancetotalk, shout,sing,run,laugh,andenjoythesunshineandfreshair.Body movement contributes to sensory perception,space,imagery,andthought.Developingeye-handco-ordinationhelpsdeveloptheskillstheyneedtowrite.

Small-muscle activities such as cutting, pour-ing,climbing,andswingingbuildconfidence.Theyhelpdevelopsmallmotorskillsfordressing,eating,and washing. This development allows children todo more for themselves. Fine motor materials pro-vide experience in seeing relationships, likenesses,and differences. They lead to classifying, seriating,discriminating,andproblem-solving.Humanhandsareliketools.Aschildrenlearntousethemtocon-trolandmakechanges,theydevelopfeelingsofcon-fidence.Motoractivitiesalsohelpfosterdescriptive,comparativevocabulary.

lotto,paperdolls,dollhousesandfurniture,simpleconstructionandscienceex-perimentsets,andsimplegamesthatteachcolors,shapes,andrelationships.Avoidtoysthataretooheavyforachild’sstrength,thataresharporcutting,orthatarepoorlymadeandcomeapart,break,orsplinter.

Whenpreschoolersplay,theyareexploringtheirworldandsatisfyingtheirinnatedesiretolearn.Byinhabitingafun,nurturing,andsafeenvironment,thepreschoolerwilldiscoverthatlearningisfun.Theappropriateactivitiesandtoyswillhelppreparechildrenforthetransitiontokindergarten.Asaparentandateacheryoucanfosteralifelongloveoflearning.Discoverthepowerofplaywithyourchild.

UndERsTanding ChildREn’s dEvElopmEnTItisimportanttounderstandhowchildrendevelopbecauseyouhaveaparticularwin-

dowofopportunityrelatedtothatdevelopment,andyouneedtogearyourtrainingtothatopportunity.Understandingyourchildren’sdevelopmentalsohelpsyounotexasperateorangerthembyexpectingtoomuchofthem.Rememberthatdevelopmentalchangesareagradualprocess.Allchildrenaredifferent,andtheCreatorhasaspecificdesignforeachchild.Don’tcompareyourchildren—toeachotherortootherpeople.Anddon’tletyourchildrenconfuseyourapprovalwithlove,asloveisnotconnectedwiththeirbehavior.
