PRELUDE

The Chrism Mass

Welcome back to the Cathedral! With Saint Peter, who witnessed the glory of Christ at His transfiguration on Mount Tabor, we can say with joy, “Lord it is good that we are here!”

We appreciate your patience observing safety protocols together. The wearing of a mask is required in the Cathedral as a safety precaution for you and your neighbors. Restrooms are closed, except for emergency use. If you should have need to use a restroom, please be prepared to follow sanitization instructions provided for the restrooms. Congregational singing is permitted; singing gently, as though whispering, may prove to be more comfortable at this time.

If you are disposed to receive Holy Communion and feel safe to do so, please refer to page 14 for guidelines. Specially trained ushers are on hand to escort you throughout the Cathedral, as well as to answer any questions you may have.

[All strike their breast] through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

V. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

R. Amen.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me;He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the lowly, to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners,To announce a year of favor from the Lord and a day of vindication by our God, to comfort all who mourn; To place on those who mourn in Zion a diadem instead of ashes,To give them oil of gladness in place of mourning, a glorious mantle instead of a listless spirit.

You yourselves shall be named priests of the Lord, ministers of our God shall you be called.

I will give them their recompense faithfully, a lasting covenant I will make with them.Their descendants shall be renowned among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; All who see them shall acknowledge them as a race the Lord has blessed.

[Before the reading.]V. The Lord be with you.R. And with your spirit.V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.R. Glory to You, O Lord.

Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had grown up, and went according to His custominto the synagogue on the sabbath day.He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Rolling up the scroll, He handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at Him.He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

[After the reading.]V. The Gospel of the Lord.R. Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.[All remain standing until Bishop Scharfenberger has reverenced the Book of the Gospels.]

Text: Traditional Spiritual; cf. Jeremiah 8:22Music: Arr. William L. Dawson, 1899–1990

There is a balm in Gilead To make the wounded whole; There is a balm in Gilead To heal the sin-sick soul.

Some times I feel discouraged, And think my work’s in vain, But then the Holy Spirit Revives my soul again. Chorus

If you cannot sing like angels,If you can’t preach like Paul,You can tell the love of Jesus,And say, “He died for all.” Chorus

INVITATION TO COMMUNION [Please kneel.]

V. Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.R. Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

During the Communion procession, please follow the direction of the usher, who will invite you by pew to proceed to the Minister of Holy Communion. Spatial distancing of 6 feet must be maintained between households. Reception of Holy Communion in the hand should take place with your mask still covering your nose and mouth. Simply slide your mask below your chin to keep both hands free. Upon consumption of the host, immediately reposition your mask to cover your nose and mouth. In order to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, simply slide your mask below your chin. Upon reception of Holy Communion, immediately reposition your mask to cover your nose and mouth. The ministers of Holy Communion may pause the procession periodically in order to sanitize their hands.

COMMUNION ANTIPHONDilexísti justítiam, et odísti iniquitátem: proptérea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus.

Vererses.

Text: Antiphon, Psalm 45:8; verses, 2ab, 11, 12, 13Music: Gregorian Missal, Mode IV

Your love is for justice; your hatred for evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you.

Vererses. ¹My heart overflows with noble words. To the king I address the song I have made. ²Listen, O daughter; pay heed and give ear: forget your own people and your father’s house. ³So will the king desire your beauty. He is your lord, pay homage to him. ⁴And the daughter of Tyre shall come with gifts; the richest of the people shall seek your favor.

COMMUNION ANTHEMVerily, verily I say unto you, except ye eat the flesh of the Son of Manand drink His blood, ye have no life in you.Whoso eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day (bis)For My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed. He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blooddwelleth in Me, and I in him.
