The Church at Horseshoe Bay
“...THE ARMS OF CHRIST IN OUR TIME AND PLACE…”
SERMON SERIES IN JANUARY
Every start to a new year is a good time to take stock of what happened in our lives during the past year and anticipate what might come in the months ahead. Churches are no different. How have we seen God’s hand in our congregational life? How do we see God leading us in the new year? What are those foundational principles and values that guide us along the way? Did you know our church has a mission, values and vision statement? These are our guiding principles that ground us in our congregational life together. For the month of January, pastors Malcolm and John will preach on our church’s mission statement: “The Church at Horseshoe Bay exists to be the arms of Christ in our time and place by sharing the Gospel in our community and wider world with love and compassion.” Each Sunday, a portion of this mission statement will be explored looking at the scriptural foundation and application for all of us who call The Church at Horseshoe Bay our faith family.
ASCRIBE PRAISE
I was baptized as a child though I don't remember it. But I do know where, when and by whom I was baptized because I have my baptismal certificate. But even if I didn't have my certificate, I trust my parents when they told me I was baptized. More importantly, however, is what baptism did and does to me. There are many meanings to the sacrament of baptism, but one includes this: in baptism, God promised and sealed me in union with Christ (Galatians 3: 27). It is a sign and reality of covenant of God's grace. As such, the Holy Spirit is working in me and I'm becoming in my daily life the kind of person I already am in my union with Christ. In other words, my life is already and not yet: already sealed with Christ and in union with Him ... but not yet complete in "Christ-likeness." The same is true for you. We continue growing in grace and doing so together in the body of Christ.
Another sign of God’s work in me is the sacrament of the Lord's Supper; about our Lord's costly, life-giving love to me. But the sacrament is also a covenant of grace (Luke 22: 19-20) reminding me each time I partake of the communion elements that our Lord has sealed me to his atoning death and brings me into the bond of his salvation. The same is true for you.
Therefore, we live together as the body of Christ: forgiving each other, gracing each other, building up each other because that is what Christ has done for us. Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Hand in hand. Complimentary and completing signs for the believer in Christ.
The first Sunday of a new year calls us to embrace the future our Lord and Savior has for us ... to be reminded why Jesus has us here ... and to do so remembering of our baptism while also communing with our Lord around his Table. Happy New Year. Happy new life in Christ.
In Christ,
Malcolm McQueen

Men of Faith Fellowship Conference
Saturday, January 25, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
In recent years the Men of Faith have held Christian Conferences at the beginning of each year on a weekend that has no football bowl games. This year in2020, January 25
th is that day. The MOF Steering Committee is pleased to
announce that they have arranged a conference on that day and secured the well-known former pastor of the Dallas First Baptist Church, O.S. Hawkins, to lead the proceedings. Currently, Pastor Hawkins is President and CEO, GuideStone Financial Resources, Dallas Texas.
This event will be held on Saturday, January 25 from 10:00am- 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of The Church at Horseshoe Bay. Tickets ($10) will be on sale in the Narthex on Sunday, available from the church office (830-598-8390) and at the door prior to the 10:00 a.m. conference on Saturday, January 25
th. You can also purchase tickets online using
this link: https://www.shelbygiving.com/App/Form/565bd79d-5eb4-4d0d-a288-ad63f55c9c00
All men of the Highland Lakes community are invited to attend.
Dr. Hawkins is a renowned pastor, noted author and respected executive. He has written more than 26 books and preaches regularly at Bible conferences, evangelism events and churches across the nation. His messages for the conference will be, "Building Positive Relationships" and "Money Talks - but what is it saying?"
During his pastoral ministry, Hawkins oversaw two of the Southern Baptist Convention’s most noted churches. In Fort Lauderdale, Hawkins oversaw tremendous growth in the church due to outreach efforts within the church. In 1993, he was called to pastor the 23,000- member First Baptist Church of Dallas, succeeding the legendary Dr. W.A. Criswell.
A native of Fort Worth, he has three earned degrees (BBA, MDiv and DMin) and sev-eral honorary degrees. He was named “Clergyman of the Year” by the Religious Her-itage of America in 1993.
His Dallas-based GuideStone Financial Resources, serves more than 200,000 pastors, church staff members, missionaries, doctors, nurses, university professors and other workers of various Southern Baptist and evangelical Christian organizations with their retirement and benefit service needs.

Books are available in the church office while supplies last for $10.
Books and Scones will meet on Tuesday,
January 28th at 2:30 pm in the church library. Our book that we will discuss is Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis.

A SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
to be
“…the arms of Christ in our time and place…”
On Saturday, November 23, 2019, the Body of Christ representing The Church of Horseshoe Bay participat-ed in the community-wide St. Frederick Baptist Church in Marble Falls Mission Outreach program. A total of 4 churches provided approximately 30 volunteers to prepare & deliver over 700 individual dinners to those in need & “First Responders” in our area.. In addition, 10 Thanksgiving boxes filled with a whole turkey + trim-mings were donated to area families. Bessie Jackson, St. Fred’s Administrator said that the overwhelming response was one of thanksgiving & gratitude.
Jim Jorden is the liaison & spiritual mentor between our church & St Fred’s Mission Outreach Program. In 2010, Jim sought to develop a mission outreach initiative for the Seekers Class at our church. His model was based on study + service + fellowship. God’s invitation has been extended to other Christian Education classes, Benevolence committee members and the congregation at-large. Volunteers from our church are asked to help deliver meals on the 5th Saturdays throughout the calendar year (about 4 times per year) to folks in Marble Falls and surrounding areas (Granite Shoals & Cottonwood Shores). Delivery volunteers typ-ically arrive at St. Fred’s about 8:45am. Robust singing & prayer invite the Holy Spirit to join us in fellowship & service. Our deliveries are completed within 2 hours.
If anyone is interested in this God-blessed, Spirited Mission Outreach,

THE ADVANTAGES OF A TAX-FREE
TRANSFER FROM AN IRA TO CHARITY
Given the recent tax legislation, the benefits of making direct donations from
an IRA to a charity could be even more advantageous to the donor. A donor
who is over 70 ½ years old may still retain a significant benefit from charita-
ble contributions by making a qualified tax-free transfer from an IRA. People
older than 70½ can transfer up to $100,000 per year from their traditional
IRAs to a charity, which can count toward their required minimum distribution
but is not taxable if they follow the rules for a qualified charitable distribution
(QCD). (This doesn’t apply to a Roth IRA, which has tax-free withdrawals
and no required distributions.) The gift stays out of your adjusted gross
income only if you make a direct transfer from your IRA to the charity. It
doesn’t count as a tax-free transfer if you withdraw the money first and then
make a donation to the charity. Ask your IRA administrator what steps you
need to take, because the procedures can vary from firm to firm.

Benevolence Spotlight
Christmas for Others Many, many thank you’s to everyone who participated in our annual Christmas for Others benevolence project this past Christmas season. Because of our members and some visitors who adopted and shopped for children, donated funds, worked the adoption table, sorted and bagged the clothes and toys and bikes and Bibles, and loaded and delivered the big black bags by caravan to Marble Falls, we were able to help provide a very blessed Christmas to 285 kids in Marble Falls and surrounding smaller communities! Whew...what a sentence! But what a marvelous congregation you are! We pray these kids may come to know that “every good and perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father”. Thanks again, Gail Matthews, Chairman Christmas for Others
Elves for the Elderly 2019 was a success!
Over 80 gift bags collected for the elderly!
What is Open Door Recovery House?
The Open Door Recovery House is a faith-based, sober-living, residential drug and alcohol recovery program where women also learn life skills while they work their way back into society. Many people stay in their destructive lifestyle because they cannot afford to get help and they provide this service free of charge to our residents.
Mission “To provide an encouraging environment for women who seek recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions”.
This program is always growing and needing additional resources. Funding is needed to provide programing for our residents, facilitate their recovery and maintain the house. In addition, we provide meals, transportation to jobs and court ordered appearances/CPS/programs/meetings, assistance with access to healthcare, education and job procurement and training. Women can stay with them from one month up to a year.
“In the last 4 months I have been blessed with the amazing opportunity to take time to re-learn who I truly am...who God intended me to be as a mother, daughter, friend, and as a person! Open Door restores the hope and love that we’ve lost. To be 5 months sober and on my way back to being a full-time mom again is nothing short of a miracle.” Written by a graduate of the Open Door Recovery House.
So to answer the question “What is Open Door Recovery House?” It is a place where miracles happen!
