This Friday, October 15, is the feast St. Teresa of
Avila, Doctor of the Church. Her accomplishments in
at least two areas are worth mentioning: first, the
reform of the Carmelite order. In the 16th century, in
Spain, life in the Carmel had become undisciplined.
The convent was seen by many as a place for a lady
to enjoy a sheltered and not terribly demanding life.
The parlor, where visitors were received, was
constantly full of the nuns’ acquaintances which
hardly fostered a spirit of contemplation. When
someone mentioned the idea of actually living
according to the original Rule, Teresa took it as a
divine inspiration.
After establishing one convent that observed a
more rigorous discipline, Teresa went on to found
fifteen more in the span of as many years, including
some men’s communities. Like her contemporary
Carmelite reformer, St. John of the Cross, she faced
serious opposition and suffered a great deal in the
process. In one case, beginning the work of founding
a convent in Toledo, she had five ducats the
equivalent of ten dollars with which to do it. She
said, “Teresa and this money are nothing; but God,
Teresa, and these ducats suffice.”
Secondly, St. Teresa blessed the Church by
articulating her experience of mental prayer, in such
works as The Interior Castle and The W ay of
Perfection. She had no ambitions of making her name
as an author, but, in humility, she wrote her books
under obedience to her superiors. In fact, she
lamented that being required to write kept her away
from the spinning wheel. She drew from her own
experience, interpreted in the light of faith. In one
place she describes how she became slack in her
habit of mental prayer, accusing herself of using ill
health as a pretext. “The excuse of bodily weakness
was not a sufficient reason why I should abandon so
good a thing, which required no physical strength, but
only love and habit. In the midst of sickness the best
prayer may be offered, and it is a mistake to think it
can only be offered in solitude.”

Caffeine: Fact or Fiction

Caffeine has a bad reputation, but is it a myth?
Chances are you have some misconceptions about
caffeine.

Caffeine is addictive: It is a mild stimulant but is not
addictive like other drugs. It is a stimulant to the
central nervous system and regular use can cause a
mild physical dependence. Studies show that
moderate amounts of caffeine increase your mood and
alertness. However, limit your intake to 23 cups a day.
Caffeine causes dehydration: It is a mild diuretic but
not very pronounced and the liquid the caffeine is in
compensated for the amount excreted.
Caffeine can make heart disease worse: There is little
proof that caffeine raises the risk of heart attacks,
sudden death or abnormal heart rhythms.
Caffeine heightens hypertension risk: It does cause a
small, short boost in blood pressure, but nothing to
cause alarm.
Caffeine causes bone loss: There is a slight increase
in calcium excretion because of caffeine. So, as
always, take it in moderation!
Caffeine causes insomnia: Caffeine is quickly
absorbed then excreted through the liver. Caffeine
consumed in the morning is out of your system within
810 hours.

28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
What’s happening at All
Saints Academy/St. Rose
Philippine Duchesne
Campus?
Thanks to Fr. Nickolai for the
beautiful blessing of the pets. While some parents
brought up their family pets, others had pictures
of their pets. It was a beautiful day to be outside
for the blessing.
Our eighth grade class has been visiting high
schools and trying to decide which high school is
best for them. Let’s pray for our eighth grade as
they decide which high school will help them grow
during the next four years.
It is hard to believe that the end of the first quarter
is almost here. Parent/Teacher conferences will
take place at the end of the month. It will be a
great time for parents and teachers to see the
growth that has occurred and create a plan moving
forward.
Thank you for your continued support and your
presence at Wednesday Mass. It is important for
our students to see parishioners at those Masses.
Let us continue to pray for one another.
Peace!

Penitential Act (Confiteor)
I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and
sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my
words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
(strike breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my
most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary everVirgin,
all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of
good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we
glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord
God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away
the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and
earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
(Bow) who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary, (End Bow) suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on
the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father
almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the
dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness
of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen.
