WELCOME to the CHURCH of SAINT SEBASTIAN In my own name and on behalf of the People of Saint Sebastian’s, welcome to our Parish! If you are visiting, coming back to the Church and Mass after some time away, or looking for a Parish, you are most welcome here at Saint Sebastian’s.

Parish Registration Registration is the official way we join a parish community, please stop in the Parish Office or register online to become a registered parishioner. To be considered an active registered member of the parish, members are asked to give of their time, talent and treasure. The parish is in need of and welcomes all three parts of your stewardship.

Sacrament of Baptism Congratulations of the birth of your child! We require all parents and godparents to attend Sacramental Preparation Classes. Once you have called the rectory to plan for the baptism of your child, we will have someone contact you to set up a special appointment for Preparation classes. These classes are usually done one on one with each family and are conducted by a couple who are well prepared to teach and assist in Baptismal Preparation.

Sacrament of Matrimony Congratulations on your engagement and decision to enter into a Catholic marriage! Saint Sebastian Parish will help you in your preparation to ensure that you make this serious and sacred step in your life a holy and happy one. The day and time of your wedding must be arranged in person by the prospective bride and groom themselves as soon as they feel called to marry. No arrangement can be made by phone or parents. All arrangements should be made nine months prior to the wedding date and done prior to scheduling the reception. The first meeting with the Pastor may be scheduled by calling the Parish Office at (401) 751-0196. Spiritual preparation is a key part of this special time. Frequent participation in the sacraments during this time is important, particularly weekly Mass attendance. It is also strongly recommended that you bring yourselves to the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this time of preparation.

Religious Education By their word and their example, parents are the first and principal teachers of their children concerning our Catholic Faith. The Religious Education of Saint Sebastian’s stands ready to assist parents in their sacred and most important responsibility. Should you have any questions about the program please contact Ms. Kristen Gold at [email protected] or Mr. Bob Short at [email protected]

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Saint Sebastian’s also offers Level One, ages 3 - 6, of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, commonly referred to as CGS. CGS is a Montessori-based program of faith formation. Please contact Mr. Bob Short, Catechist, at [email protected]

From FATHER JORDAN, O.P. , Pastor

MY DEAR ONES,

May the Grace of Our Lord be always with us! Happy Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday! Today we light the rose candle, the celebrant wears rose vestments, and there is more decoration in the Church than there has been since advent began, the Day of our Salvation is close at hand! The first words of the Angel Gabriel to Our Lady are, “Rejoice! Full of grace, the Lord is with you!” The Blessed Virgin Mary is the preeminent person in the world capable of rejoicing, for joy is the elation we experience when our will desires something ordered to our true happiness and when we possess that desired good. Because Mary’s Immaculate Heart remains wholly conformed and devoted to the will of God, everything that she desires is a manifestation of the divine will. As a result, Mary can truly rejoice. In fact, her life is an act of rejoicing, for every act of her sinless - will stands as the human fulfillment of the will of God: her only desire! Rejoicing because we make an act of the will – have you ever considered such a thing? Our will can be described as what we desire, and even more, what we choose. Do our choices truly make us happy; do our choices lead us to rejoice? The foundation of our rejoicing on the Third Sunday of Advent is because the greatest desire of our hearts, the celebration of Incarnation of Christ Jesus, His return in glory, is at hand! And, the remembrance of His Birth and our joyful expectation of His return in glory, lead us to make a choice: will we choose to be a disciple of Jesus, not just when it is comfortable, but especially when it is uncomfortable? Will we choose, every day, to strive to unite our will and desires to the will of God, or will we go blithely on our way of self-sufficiency that causes us to feel a bit empty, like something is missing? Our rejoicing rests firmly in the words of the Prophet Isaiah, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me...to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives…a year of favor from the Lord!” Where do we find ourselves as poor, brokenhearted, captive; where are those we love, work with, our friends longing for freedom, seeking God’s favor, that all of us may rejoice? It is in these instances that Isaiah mentions that are choices

will lead us to rejoice! What will be our choices that we will rejoice? I pray that one of our choices will be to take part in the graces offered to us through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please remember that this weekend, December 14 – 15, and next weekend, December 21 – 22, Confessions will be heard during all the Masses. How much easier could it be? As you are waiting for Mass to begin or through any part of the Mass, simply go to the Reconciliation Room, and Father will be there: this is better

than shopping online! ☺ As Christmas draws near, what choices have you made from a few suggestions I offered to you on the First Sunday of Advent? Those choices are: 1. This Advent let your heart be inflamed a new as you go

to Confession… 2. This Advent pray together as a family; have a family

Advent Wreath and light it each evening at dinner; come to Sunday mass as a family.

3. This Advent find the wonder of love incarnate by

visiting someone you haven’t seen or healing a broken relationship.

4. This Advent discover the greatest Wonder is Jesus

Christ, your relationship with him, made incarnate in your family and your fellow parishioners!

CHRISTMAS CONFESSION

The perfect preparation for Christmas is a good Christmas

Confession. Pope Francis offers us some wonderful reflection

about this great Sacrament:

Acknowledging a popular objection to the sacrament, Pope

Francis noted, “someone can say, ‘I confess my sins only to God.’

Yes, you can say to God, ‘forgive me,’ and say your sins. But our

sins are also against our brothers, against the Church. This is

why it is necessary to ask forgiveness of the Church and of our

brothers, in the person of the priest. Forgiveness is not something

we can give ourselves; One asks forgiveness, one asks it of another

person, and in confession, we ask forgiveness from Jesus. “every

time we go to confession, God embraces us.”

Come be embraced by God every Saturday at 4pm; On Sunday

December 14/15 and 21/22 during any of the weekend

Masses; and on Christmas Eve from 11am – 12:30pm.

SHARING THE VISION, MEETING THE CHALLENGE; CHRISTMAS FLOWERS AND CHRISTMAS COLLECTION; END OF THE YEAR GIVING Throughout my years as a pastor, school administrator, and health care executive, I have never had to talk about money as much as I have needed to address financial issues with you. It’s not easy for me to have to discuss this on a such a regular basis, and I know it is tiresome for you to hear. Nonetheless, you deserve to know our needs and your generous response:

Sharing the Vision, Meeting the Challenge: total amount pledged, or gifts received: $398,427.00 It takes the Diocese two – three weeks for their accounting to match ours. We continue to receive gifts almost daily and we are moving every closer to our goal: thank you!

Christmas Flowers and Collection: There are envelopes at the end of all the pews for Christmas Flowers and Christmas Flower Memorials. Please place your envelope in the collection basket.

The goal for this year’s Christmas Collection is $25,000.00. The Christmas Collection is a crucial collection in the financial life of a Parish: this collection allows us to catch up where we have fallen behind, and if we make goal or exceed it – move ahead. Thank you for your generosity!

As we look to the end of the year, your end of year giving either through the budget collection; online giving; the Capital Campaign or estate planning offer benefits to you and to the Parish.
