About Us

3

The Church of St. John the Divine (SJD) has worshiped and glorified God for eighty years, becoming the second largest Episcopal congregation in the Diocese of Texas and one of the largest in the United States. We are a vibrant, urban parish in America’s fourth-largest city, and we embrace the Gospel’s call to mission by being an active, visible, and engaged Christian actor in our community. Through God’s provision, we are a healthy, stable congregation with average Sunday attendance of approximately 900 souls; we are debt free, and we are graced with healthy monetary reserves.

O U R M I S S I O N S T A T E M E N TWe are faithful followers of Jesus Christ, dedicated to Changing Lives for God in Christ.

O U R V I S I O N

We desire to represent the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus in the world. Therefore we:

• WORSHIP God in all we do and pray without ceasing;

• CONNECT with one another in ways that bless and enrich our lives;

• GROW deeper in Biblical faith and equip generations of servant leaders;

• GO into the world serving with others to help bless all people in ways that change the world for God in Christ.

We Are Seeking

4

We are seeking a rector who will embody the following talents, abilities, and spiritual gifts:

• A Biblically-Centered Disciple of Jesus: who seeks first the will of God through prayer and his scripture; using his or her spiritual gifts to model faith in Christ and pastoral love.

• A Collaborative Servant Leader: who is comfortable with delegation and able to manage a large, diverse parish, strong vestry and lay leadership, and excellent clergy and staff of 40+.

• A Christ-centered, Spirit-filled, Preacher/Teacher: who is dynamic and theologically deep.

• A Loving, Caring, and Mentoring Pastor: who is compassionately skilled at dealing with divergent opinions through mutual respect.

• A Shepherd: who is willing to foster an environment that enables others to succeed and grow God’s Kingdom, and who can thoughtfully implement our plans for the future.

• A Unifier: who is interpersonally gifted and is comfortable with a geographically and socio-economically diverse church, located in an affluent area of central Houston.

• An Evangelical Leader: who supports our outreach locally, regionally, and internationally.

Our History

5

The seeds of The Church of St. John the Divine were planted in December 1939 in a nine-member Sunday school class.

On Easter day, March 24, 1940, to the surprise of many, 136 people attended the first services held in the cafeteria of River Oaks Elementary School. Rapid growth of the congregation made it clear that property must be acquired for a permanent church. The obvious choice was a wooded plot located on River Oaks Boulevard, near the edge of what was then Houston’s city limits, but the River Oaks Corporation opposed the purchase for religious use. The Corporation was planning an elegant shopping complex and considered such prime real estate far too valuable to be offered for something as clearly “unprofitable” as a church. Tom Sumners, our new, young rector, took this rejection as a challenge and promptly began his campaign to secure the land. In December of 1940, just nine months after organizing the church, the inaugural service was held in the beautiful limestone chapel, which is still in existence and used today.

In the midst of the Second World War, with the Holy Spirit as their guide, St. John the Divine parishioners took steps to lay a solid foundation for anticipated future expansion. By the autumn of 1944, demolition of the River Oaks Corporation building on the corner

of River Oaks Blvd and Westheimer made possible the acquisition of nearly all the land contained in the present site of St. John the Divine. It would take almost another decade to raise the funds required to construct our current church home, but finally, on February 28, 1954, the Rev. Tom Sumners and his more than 2,100 communicants could rejoice that the Table of the Lord had never been more splendidly housed!

In 1971, after 31 years of faithful and loving service, the Rev. Thomas W. Sumners retired as rector, and the Rev. Thomas A. Roberts, D.D. was called. Due to the untimely death of the Rev. Roberts, after only three years as our rector, the Rev. Maurice M. Benitez, D.D. was welcomed as the third rector of St. John the Divine in December 1974. Under his tutelage, the parish grew in many wonderful and diverse directions, deepening the commitment of its members and raising their sights to numerous opportunities for service both at home and abroad. Along with a continuing emphasis on evangelical and congregational spiritual renewal, an extensive building program was undertaken in 1978, which provided us with Sumners Hall, an open venue to congregate for fellowship and meetings. On June 13, 1980, the Rev. Benitez was elected sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Texas, and in less than a year, in May, 1981, the vestry of St. John the Divine called the Rev. Laurens A. Hall, D.D. to be the fourth rector of our church.

Under the Rev. Hall’s guidance, a capital campaign was launched in late 1992 with the slogan “Today’s Needs: Tomorrow’s Promise.” Through the sacrificial gifts of hundreds of faithful parishioners, funds were provided for renovation and refurbishing of the large church and construction of a new Parish Life Center, new educational facilities, and administration offices. In 2004, a second successful capital campaign

included a massive renovation of the church, and a new organ was commissioned and crafted by Orgues Létourneau Limitée of Quebec, Canada. The circle drive on River Oaks Blvd. was expanded and, with the Julia Picton Wallace Memorial Garden in the center, now provides an elegantly landscaped focal point for the church entrance. The Life-Changing Cross was introduced in 2009 as the new, iconic logo for the church, and the vestry and communications committee prayed and worked together to refine our vision and values, challenging all of us to “Change Lives for God in Christ.” After 33 blessed years at St. John the Divine, the Rev. Hall retired in 2014.

In 2014, the vestry called the Rev. Dr. Clay Lein as the fifth rector of St. John the Divine. Under the Rev. Lein’s energetic leadership, we undertook a visioning process that yielded strategies to further develop our solid foundation of 80 years of ministry. Vision 2019, categorized as WORSHIP, CONNECT, GROW & GO, serve as rallying points. By God’s grace, we will continue to expand and invigorate our worship offerings, connect more deeply with each other through pastoral care and intergenerational programs, while growing our Teaching Center and family ministries. We heed God’s call to go into the world with intentionality, contributing SJD’s unique resources to serve God’s Kingdom.

Throughout our blessed history, the character of our parish shines forth. St. John the Divine is, first and foremost, Christ-focused and Spirit-led. We are a loving, relational, and team oriented community; we possess extraordinary lay talent and abound in servant leaders; we are generous and caring. Our clergy is cohesive, modeling Biblical faith and forgiveness, guiding us into the coming generations with pastoral love and Spirit-filled courage.

Our music and worship ministry is an important part of our WORSHIP experience. The more formal liturgies of St. John the Divine make frequent use of our Létourneau organ, which faithfully renders the music of the great composers and accompanies choirs, soloists, and the congregation each week. Entersect, where life and art meet, is an extension of our music and worship ministry, providing opportunities to encounter the Divine through the transformative power of the arts.

• St. John’s ChoraleThe Chorale sings weekly at the 9:00 am and 11:00 am traditional services.

• Children and Youth ChoirsMusic for Children and Youth at St. John the Divine seeks to nurture each young person’s relationship with God in Christ.

• SJD Worship BandThe SJD Worship Band leads the blending of the ancient structure of worship with band-led modern music. It encourages the congregation’s song in corporate prayer and praise.

Entersect, where life and art meet, offers parishioners and the community unique opportunities to experience the arts through concert presentations, teaching, and partner programs with other organizations.

• Special Concert & Worship Presentations

• Christmas on the BoulevardA yearly, free, and open-to-the-public event to celebrate Christ’s birth, including a live nativity and gala concert.

St. John the Divine is a relational church. We strive to CONNECT people to Jesus and to each other, intentionally providing prayer, care, community, and fellowship. The CONNECT Ministry invites, welcomes, and connects everyone within our church family.

We partner with each ministry to build cohesive, intergenerational relationships, and to CONNECT new members to SJD’s wide array of ministries, studies, and services. Through every stage of life, we provide support, small groups, church-wide fellowship events, and pastoral care.

GROW-ing in faith is a life-long journey. St. John the Divine ministries span the Christian life, beginning with Baptism. GROW-ing in Christ has four transformational aims:

• Proximity to Jesus: helping people become relationally connected to Jesus so that he becomes the guiding center of their lives.

• Biblical Literacy: growing in relationship to Jesus to “read, mark, learn and inwardly digest” his revealed word.

• Vision and Heart of the Servant: developing Christ’s servant heart and vision for the deep needs of people of this world.

• Transformational Leadership: learning the skill to communicate Jesus Christ’s Gospel and its world-changing redemption.
