Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2018

FOCUS: Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!

Jesus says, There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. By our baptism we are called to prophecy, and to share the good news of salvation. May we have the enthusiasm of Eldad, Medad and the unknown follower of the Gospel—having no fear in proclaiming the truth and now waiting to be told what to do.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Joshua protests to Moses in our first reading that two men who were not present when the Spirit of God came and rested upon he elders should not be prophesying. In the second reading, James tells us what happens to the things of this world. In the Gospel, John says to Jesus that someone not in their company was using the power of his name, and Jesus replies, whoever is not against us is for us.

REFLECTION: Jesus tells us to cut off a hand or foot or pluck out an eye if they cause us to sin. We get the point – don’t we? Sin is serious, not just for us, but for the community. One person might sin; but the whole community suffers – especially "the little ones" – those whose faith is vulnerable. He’s calling us to make whatever changes we must to live his life. He knows making serious change can be as painful as cut-ting off a limb. So he is here to encourage and enable us.

So we ask ourselves:

♦ What necessary changes must I make now to fol-low Jesus more closely?

♦ What’s holding me back?

♦ Do I believe he will be there to help me, once I determine to do something?
