Bites of Bread from Bob At the recent Oregon Christian Convention, held at the historic tabernacle in Turner, Oregon, several of us were able to hear two outstanding speakers: Allan Dunbar and LeRoy Lawson. On the opening night, Allan Dunbar shared a story from Tony Campolo.

Tony Campolo relates the time his mother called him and told him that Mrs. Kilpatrick had died. This dear woman, Mrs. Kilpatrick, had lived on his street in West Philly as he was growing up. She had taken him to museums, concerts, social functions. So, Tony’s mom called and said, "Now, Tony, the least you can do to show your respect for Mrs. Kilpatrick is to go to her funeral." Campolo, in his 60’s, says, "If you’re Italian and your mother tells you to do something, you do it, no matter how old you are."

So, he went, but he got there a little late. He said, "I rushed in and sat down, looked around and realized that I was the only one there except for this one eld-erly lady. "I looked over the edge of the casket and I could tell that the MAN lying there was not Mrs. Kilpatrick," and he realized he was in the wrong room! He was about to get up when this elderly lady grabbed his arm, looked at him with tear-filled eyes and said, "You were his friend weren’t you?"

Campolo asks, "What would you do? Would you say, ‘No, I’m in the wrong room. I didn’t know your

husband, but by the looks of things nobody else did either’? "No," Campolo said, "I did the same thing you’d do. I lied. I said, ‘Yes, he was quite a man, wasn’t he?’ I sat through the whole funeral and since I was the only one there I went to the cemetery too."

On the way back Campolo said, "Mrs. King, I have to be honest with you. I didn’t know your husband. I came to the funeral by mistake." But instead of being

angry, she squeezed his hand and said slowly, "You’ll never, ever know how much your being with me today meant to me."

We all need someone to be with us on occasion. Maybe not quite that desper-ately but we all need emotional support at times, somebody we can talk to, somebody that will hold us up in difficult times. This is why some of the most comforting words of scripture are found at the very end of the Gospel of Matthew: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” It is impor-tant for us to also remember that we are called to be the presence of Christ to others. As it says in the 26th chapter of Matthew, as much as we do this for even the least of these, we are doing it for Christ.

Helping Hands One of the ministries of this congregation you may not have heard about is "Helping Hands." It is a way our congregation reaches out to the needs of people within the congregation. These are usually one-time needs that pop up in the lives of our people.

It is supported by donations from people in the con-gregation. Some Sunday School classes give to this regularly. It is a way to give to the needs of people without individuals having to ask for assistance or people feeling guilty about what they can or can not give.

If you would like to help out in this way, simply identify your gift as being for "Helping Hands."

Condolences Roy Yung passed away on June 23. Our sympathies and prayers go out to his daughter, Joyce Knights, and the rest of his family. Roy’s memorial service was on July 2, 2014.

Gladys Sebern passed away on July 3. Our prayers and sympathies go out to her family. There will be a private family interment. Debbie Adams passed away on July 5 in California. Her parents are Richard & Carole Adams and our sympathies and prayers go out to them and the rest of her family. Ed Gish passed away on July 7. Our sympathies and prayers go out to his daughter and son, Leanne Gish and Austin Gish, and to the rest of his family.

Ed’s memorial service is on Monday, July 14, at 2:00 pm in the Sanctuary.

Welcome, Wendy Noble A warm welcome to Wendy Noble...or should we say “Welcome back.” Wendy and her family moved from Salem to Bend, OR where she went to college. They then moved to Florida before coming back to Oregon a couple of months ago. Her daughter, Cameron, is going into 8th grade and will be partici-pating in our summer camping program. Wendy’s son, Zach, lives in Bend with his son, Zaden, who was born on Valentine’s Day this year.

Children and Youth Ramblings from Riane In a world where quick judgments, cliques, and inse-curities often challenge our personal confidence and self-acceptance, Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…” Psalm 139:13-14 explains “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” God purposefully created us just the way we are – unique and beautiful.

In Sunday School, we began a two-week series on happiness, beginning with how self-acceptance con-tributes to our happiness. We discussed how every-one has imperfections and insecurities, but it is how we deal with those and accept ourselves as the unique individuals that God created us to be, that affects our happiness and positive outlook on life. In the weeks to come, we will explore how showing gratitude to God for the blessings he has given us, as well as to others for the things they do, lead to greater happi-ness and a willingness to give more. We kicked off our summer by going to Silver Falls State Park for some hiking and kickball! Nothing refreshes the soul like being surrounded by the care-ful craftsmanship of God’s beautiful creations. This week Allison Pfaff will share her experience in the Holy Land with the youth and teach them about this Holy place through pictures as they relate to scripture. Remember to check the youth bulletin board each Sunday for an update on weekly youth events!

A Little Light from Laurie GET READY FOR A PEEK AT THE UNIQUE!!!

At Weird Animals VBS, kids discover that Jesus’ love is one-of-a-kind. Weird Animals is a habitat filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch and even taste! Sciency-Fun Gizmos, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and safe shoes). Plus, we will help kids discover how to see evidence of God in everyday life—something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot!

So grab your kids, your friend’s kids, your nieces, nephews, and godchildren; you can even grab your neighbor’s kids (with permission, of course) and bring them to Weird Animals VBS Sunday, July 20, at 6:00 pm for a daily celebration of Jesus’ love you won’t want to miss. Are you yearning for a Bible Study during the summer? We have a solution for you. A Summer Bible Study is starting on Thursday, July 31. This is a six-week study of “The Purpose Driven Life,” by Rick Warren. We will embark on a life-changing experience within the small group. Studying God’s Word together always impacts our lives in powerful ways.

This is a book and video-based study to guide us through a 40-day spiritual journey that will transform our answer to life’s most impor-tant question: “What on earth am I here for?”

The study begins Thursday, July 31, at 6:30–8:00 pm in the Parlor. We will meet every Thursday through September 4. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Michelle Gorman at the church office. She will also be ordering the books.

Regional Church Picnic Saturday, August 9 11:00 am, Willamette Mission State Park

This annual gathering is a favorite summer tradition. They plan to eat at noon, followed by worship. The Regional Church provides burgers and dogs, and re-quests you bring salads, desserts and smiles.

Flying M Ranch/Trask Mountain Overnight Horseback Ride August 22-23

Our congregation has reserved a two-day, one-night trail-ride package. Ride up to the summit of Trask Mountain to a secluded log cabin. All meals are included.

Dinner consists of BBQ steak and chicken, homemade yeast rolls, baked beans, salad and dessert. Sit around the camp-fire and stay the night in a wood-heated bunkhouse.
