Vol. 24 February 2012 Number 2 THE CHURCH VOICE Along the Causeway………… Dear friends in Christ, “Virginia is for Lovers” - that was a marketing slogan for our neighbor state to the north when Margaret and I lived there from 1988-1992. With Valentine’s Day in this month, we could also say “February is for Lovers!” Other good events this month are the Souper Bowl Lunch following worship on Sunday, February 5, and the Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, February 13, followed by our Ash Wednesday worship service at 7:00pm on February 22. The following Sunday, Feb. 26, our Presbyterian Women friends are encouraging us to support a Love Offering for their “Helping Hands” project. The Lenten Lunches begin on Ash Wednesday and continue for 6 Wednesdays. Our Church will host the Lunch on February 29—Leap Day! We can also say the “Church is for Lovers” as we gather to celebrate the love of Jesus Christ every Sunday...and as we go forth to share that love and God’s Amazing Grace with all we encounter between Sundays. God is all-loving and we all need love to survive and thrive. As I try to remind you in the Charge before the Benediction many Sunday mornings, “God’s love is never truly ours until we give it away.” And the more we give, the more God can be counted on to replenish what we have to give. God’s love is an unquenchable miracle, our greatest joy re- sults in the efforts we make to give God’s love to those we love and to those who need love in our community. The Church is for Lovers—may that be true for us in February and true every time we gather to worship and work for the Glory of God. Love one another. In God’s Grace,

THE CHURCH VOICE

Along the Causeway…………

Dear friends in Christ,

“Virginia is for Lovers” - that was a marketing slogan for our neighbor state to the north when Margaret and I lived there from 1988-1992.

God’s love is an unquenchable miracle, our greatest joy re-sults in the efforts we make to give God’s love to those we love and to those who need love in our community.

The Church is for Lovers—may that be true for us in February and true every time we gather to worship and work for the Glory of God.

Love one another. In God’s Grace,

“Heaven is going to be a vast, colorful tapestry of

living things.

God is a God of life….

Does this seem too childish and silly to believe?

I certainly hope so, because that’s a sure sign

that it’s true.”

Anthony Destefano (Guideposts Magazine

A note of thanks to my Church Family for all the cards, calls, thoughts,

that so many care for you.

Dear Friends

Linda and I want to thank all  of our concerned friends for  the many “get well” wishes,  cards, food and especially the prayers for recovery from my

recent surgery.

It was comforting to know that the surgeon and other health

caregivers were operating under the influence of your prayers.

There have been no  complications and rapid  progress is being made.

It is good to be with you in our faith journey.

With thankful hearts,

Marvin and Linda Stackhouse

Church Happenings

May I ask you for a favor? When I arrive at the Church office on  Monday mornings...my first order of  business is to enter attendance for the

8:30 & 11:00 Worship services.

I’m having a difficult time distinguishing the appropriate times to enter for each

person in attendance.

I’m always relieved to flip through the  Fellowship pads and see that someone has either written the time or drawn a line

between the 2 services.

Any help would be appreciated… whether you jot down the time...or just

scribble in a line!

Thanks so much  for your help!

Warm up with 55+ on Tuesday, February 7.

We will gather at the Purple Onion at 6:00pm for good food, great dessert, and warm Christian fellowship.  Bring your Valentine, a friend, a neighbor, and the most important

person, “yourself"! You can’t beat that for a date night!

If you do not receive a call from one of our hostesses, or are not on our call list,  call Marie Greene 9107542624 before noon on Friday, January 27th.

Please remember that plates can be picked up if you are unable to come,  but after Friday the reservations made have to be honored and paid for.

One of the best parts of attending Worship Service

at SPC is the warm welcome you receive the  moment you walk through the door!

Everyone enjoys being greeted by a smiling face, hearty handshake, and friendly “Hello!”

Our current greeters do a FANTASTIC job of welcoming both visitors and  Members each week...but they could use your help!

We are expanding our list of Greeters & would LOVE to have you join us!

If you would like to have your name added to the rotating list of Greeters,  please speak with Steve Spoon...or call the church office @ 754‐6929.

The Shallotte Presbyterian Women,

in order to assist members of our congregation in financial difficulty, established the Helping Hands

Fund in 2010. Since then several families have received much needed assistance.

However, demand never ends; thus the Presbyterian Women will collect a

one-time love offering from the congregation on Sunday, February 26.

Members of the PW will gratefully accept your tax-deductible contribution following the 8:30 and

11:00 worship services as you exit the sanctuary.

Look for the special “Love Offering” envelopes. Make your donation to this on-going need by making checks payable to the Shallotte Presbyterian Women

with “Helping Hands” on the memo line.

God bless your generosity!

CENTERPOINT  The child sexual abuse scandal at Penn State, a predominant news story in recent months, has sparked much outrage and discussion.

Child sexual abuse is a terrible crime that can cause lasting severe emotional distress to the  victim.  Sleep disturbance, withdrawal, low self‐esteem, trust issues, anger, and depression are just a few examples of the potential effects of abuse.

The fact that the scandal has gotten people talking about sexual abuse of children and teenagers is a good thing.  Talking openly about it raises awareness which is an important step towards prevention.

Parents often find it uncomfortable and awkward to talk with their children about sex.  Creating an open environment where sensitive topics can be discussed freely is one of the best ways you can protect your children from sexual predators.

In the next Centerpoint article, we will discuss ways to talk to your children about sex and  sexual abuse.  The third article in this series will address how to recognize a potential predator.
