What is the Purpose
The circulatory system transports needed materials throughout out body including nutrients and gases (oxygen) and eliminates waste.
Our body would not receive the oxygen and nutrients we take in without the circulatory system.
Main Parts
• The heart is the main engine of the circulatory system. It pumps blood throughout your body.
• The blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries) are the tubes inside your body that blood flow through.
• The blood transports nutrients, gases, and waste through the blood vessels.
The Blood
• We have two types of blood cells, white blood cells and red blood cells.
White blood cells defend our body against infection and disease.
Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to every other part of the body.
The Inner Workings
The blood vessels include the arteries, veins, and capillaries• Arteries carry blood away from your heart to
the rest of your body. Blood cells here have a red color because they are oxygenated.
• Veins take blood from the body back to the heart. Blood cells here have a blue color because they don’t have oxygen.
• Capillaries are blood vessels that carry blood between the arteries and the veins to the tissues in our body.
