MAYOR DEREK CORRIGAN

Welcome

Welcome to our 28th Symphony in the Park, our annual event that gives Burnaby citizens the unique opportunity to enjoy the majestic music of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra music in a spectacular, but informal setting.

We are thrilled that this event enables families to gather for what, each year, is a spectacular musical experience.

As we all enjoy this evening of VSO Music, I would like to thank the VSO, and each of you, for ensuring the tremendous ongoing success of Burnaby’s Symphony in the Park.

TANIA MILLER ALBERT SEO

Tania Miller conductor

Tania Miller recently celebrated her thirteenth season as Music Director of the Victoria Symphony in a position that she has occupied with great distinction and growing acclaim. As the first Canadian woman to be Music Director of a major Canadian symphony orchestra, she celebrated the Victoria Symphony’s 75th anniversary last season by touring with the orchestra across Canada.

On the podium, Maestra Miller projects authority, dynamism and sheer love of the experience of making music. Critics call her performances “technically immaculate, vivid and stirring.” As a curator, she has distinguished herself in Canada as a visionary leader and innovator.

She has appeared as a guest conductor with such orchestras as the Toronto Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Bern Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, and Wroclaw Philharmonic.

Maestra Miller obtained her doctoral and master’s degrees in conducting from the University of Michigan. She recently received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Royal Roads University in recognition of her exemplary work as a leader in the community.

She lives in Vancouver with her husband and two sons.

Albert Seo cello

Canadian cellist Albert Seo has studied cello for 11 years, and currently studies with VSO Principal Cellist Ariel Barnes. In 2015, the 18 year-old Southridge Senior School student was a finalist at the Johansen International String Competition and won the Bach Award at the Stulberg International String Competition. He received first place at the Vancouver Women’s Music Society Scholarship Competition and won the Senior Division of the VSO School of Music Future of Excellence prize. In 2013, he won prizes in the Canadian Music Competition, receiving first-place in his age division.

He has been featured as a soloist with the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Seattle Philharmonia Orchestra. He competed in the 22nd Annual Bjorn & Lori Hareid Senior Secondary Competition receiving the “Loyal Protestant Association Scholarship.”

In 2016, Albert was accepted into the prestigious Curtis Institute. He hopes by performing he can promote the value of music in society.

BRAMWELL TOVEY WITH THE VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1919, the GRAMMY® and Juno® Award-winning Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is one of Canada’s most active and successful performing arts institutions. The VSO, led by Music Director Bramwell Tovey, performs over 150 concerts per season to an annual audience of over 260,000 people at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Vancouver and at numerous additional venues throughout Metro Vancouver.

Touring and recording have played an important part of the VSO’s history. Most recently, the orchestra embarked on an 8-city tour of the West Coast of the United States in 2013. The orchestra has also toured to great critical acclaim in South Korea, Macau and China in 2008, and was the first Canadian symphony orchestra to perform at the prestigious Beijing Music Festival. This was followed by a successful Canadian tour in 2009 with concerts in Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa and Québec City.

The VSO won both the GRAMMY® and Juno® awards in 2008 for its recording of the violin concertos of Walton, Korngold and Barber, performed with violinist James Ehnes and conducted by Maestro Tovey. In 2010, billions of people around the world heard the VSO’s recordings of national anthems for the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. In 2011, the VSO was nominated for a Juno® award for its recording of the two Chopin piano concertos with pianist Janina Fialkowska.

VSO Music Director Bramwell Tovey is acknowledged around the world for his artistic depth and his charismatic personality on the podium. Tovey’s career as a conductor is uniquely enhanced by his work as a composer and pianist, lending him a remarkable musical perspective. As a composer, he was honored with the Best Canadian Classical Composition 2003 Juno® Award for his Requiem for a Charred Skull. His works include a co-commission for the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics’ 2008 summer seasons as well as a full-length opera for the Calgary Opera, The Inventor that premiered in 2011.

The VSO also maintains extensive education and community programs experienced by over 50,000 children each year. Significantly expanding these activities, in 2011 it opened the VSO School of Music in downtown Vancouver and in 2015, it launched the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler, which mentors 120 of the best young musicians from around the world in one of the region’s most breathtaking locations.
