Ultrafiltration:A First for Illinois
The City of Lake Forest Ultrafiltration Water Treatment Process
In October of 2004, this $20 millionproject for the City of Lake Forest
was completed after 26 months of con-struction, on time and under the City’sbudget. The City is extremely pleasedto have the first ultrafiltration watertreatment process in the state of Illinoisand featured in a showcase plant.
The new building was built withinone of their underground sedimentationbasins after shoring was completed ontwo sides to protect the surroundinghills. It contains eight new ultrafiltra-tion units and is designed for future ex-pansion, including skylights and flooropenings to get new units into the build-ing. The building also includes variouspumps, HVAC equipment, pre-filterstrainers, the surge control tank, thechemical feed system, and two waterstorage tanks.
The translucent panel system createda beautiful transition from the old build-ing to the new and houses the new labo-ratory and control room. Five new high-lift pumps, four low-lift pumps, newswitchgear, variable frequency drives,
and two 2500 kw generators werehoused within the existing building af-ter modifications of the old sand filtersystem.
Major contributors to this success-ful project include: project engineerCarollo Engineers, owner’s represen-tatives Project Management AdvisorsInc. and Capital Project ConsultingInc., and many subcontractors and sup-pliers. The JJH team was comprisedof Senior Project Manager BillMarshalla, Project Engineer KarenRichards, Superintendents KenKreason and Peter Hall and Adminis-trative Assistant Charla Nguyen.

Safety Coordinator David Grum came up with the ideaof including families of JJH employees in safety aware-
ness. At the picnic this year, David asked the children ofthe JJH field and office staff to sign a hand print and placeit on the new banner. This reminds us all that the reasonsto be safe on the job go beyond the job itself. David tookphotos of workers and their family members at the picnicto drive that message even further.
At the October Operations Meeting, John Hayskar ofCincinnati Insurance spoke about safety when work-
