The Clarence Jazzmen
Drummer Warren "Clarence" Byrnes, now the only original member, is both drummer and much acclaimed lead vocalist. He’s joined by Pietro Fine on clarinet, soprano sax, melodica and piano, Terry Villis on gui-tar and banjo, Bob Dooley on double bass along with newest member Dave Stephenson on trumpet and trombone. They play the repertoire of the old Australian jazz bands, popular show songs and jazz clas-sics, from Buddy Bolden's Blues of the 1920s to Mercy, Mercy, Mercy from the 60s.

At a wedding ceremony, the pastor asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom. It was their time to stand up and talk, or forever hold their peace. The moment of utter silence was broken by a young beautiful woman carrying a child. She started walking toward the pastor slowly. Everything quickly turned to chaos. The bride slapped the groom. The groom's mother fainted. The groomsmen started giving each other looks and wondering how best to help save the situation. The pastor asked the woman, "Can you tell us why you came forward? What do you have to say?" The woman replied, "We can't hear in the back."
In the last newsletter I mentioned we would very much like to have a talent bank to help with club activities from time to time. To be more specific now, it would be great if any member who goes to a jazz or blues gig could give us a few words, maybe 100, about their visit, the name of the band and your opinion on their music. Not a highly detailed critique – just did you enjoy the show,
do you think it’s one we should try to get to our club, that sort of thing. What you say would be for this newsletter and therefore subject to any editing deemed necessary or helpful. I also take this opportunity to gently remind everyone about our generous hosts, Condong Bowling Club. At a time when the jazz club needed a new home they were there for us and I don’t think our presence and activity since is exactly a get rich quick scheme for them. So I thank them on behalf of all members and just suggest you might consider joining the bowlo your-selves with an $11 social membership. It does mean you would have the benefit of club prices but above all join in the mutual back scratch between our two clubs, that’s the way better things happen in this world.. FRIDAY APRIL 28TH AFTER AN EARLY BIRDS START AT 6:00 (est)
THE COL ATKINSON QUARTET
….
Col Atkinson Bass and vocals, Wil Sargisson Piano and Willy Qua Alto Sax, Flute and Drums are probably three of the most renowned and recognized Jazz musicians on the Gold Coast. Both Wil and Willy are members of Australia's iconic Jazz Band Galapagos Duck and Col and Willy often co write tunes for the band. All three have extensive backgrounds in music and have worked all around the World playing for many famous stars from stage and screen. Col, Wil and Willy have also been working together for the past eight years and have done the Michael Buble Tribute Show and have worked as far south as Melbourne and Sydney, as far west as Broken Hill and as far North as McKay, so as you can see they all individually and as a group bring a wealth of experi-ence to the table. Their repertoire consists of them playing instrumentals of Modern Jazz, Jazz Funk, Bebop, Latin Jazz and Swing and of course a lot lot more and with Col's smooth vocals as well, the boys bring professionalism to a new level.
At the end of May we are delighted to welcome back Royden Ainsworth with his band, Jazz In Extenso.
Members will remember Royden led the magnificent Northern Rivers Big Band in November and this next visit will feature Ben Rogers, guitar, Jack Thorncraft, bass, Pete Wilkins, drums. This accomplished band bridges nicely between Col Atkinson and our June programme (still under wraps).
A panorama of happy jazz fans enjoying jazz at its best with some of the very best talent in Northern Australia This rates as one of the very best shows at Condong.
