Dear People of Saint Anne,

Sometimes, as a priest, what we do is explain, sometimes we comfort, often we teach, we organize, we guide,

we recommend, we direct, we supervise. Sometimes, both alone and with others, we even question and doubt

and worry. But more often than not, we pray. Like Jesus, we find ourselves standing with arms stretched out

from earth to heaven, in acts that implore God’s merciful presence and action; we anxiously await a revelation

of God’s will, as Jesus did in the garden and on the cross. My priesthood may well be defined as my

willingness to stand in the center of life’s tensions, alone and with the people of God, in prayer.

When Jesus spoke of prayer, he did not really give lessons outside the model for the Lord’s Prayer. But the

way he described his Father said a lot about how hard praying is. When he claims that the one “who asks,

receives, the one who seeks, finds, and the one who knocks, the door will be open.“ Jesus is perhaps a little ingenuous.

Although this may be true over time, Jesus advises elsewhere, that the one who prays should be as tough as an

old lady demanding justice from a corrupt judge. That is our only hope of getting our prayers answered.

Jesus says his Father will answer with an egg, not a scorpion; a fish, not a snake. He does give his Spirit to

those who ask. But a lot of screaming and pounding seems to be required first. Apparently, we are expected

to endure God’s silence and inaction with demands and frustrated insistence.

To pray as Jesus describes, demands both the courage of a warrior and the docility of a disciple. In the garden

of Gethsemane, he prayed with heartfelt honesty for God to let the cup pass away without his having to drink

it, but then added, “yet not what I want but what you want.” On the cross itself, at the very moment he was

fulfilling the Father’s will, Jesus cried out, wondering why God had forsaken him. Perhaps this is why Jesus

says that the kingdom of heaven can only be taken by force. I am not violent like that. Thus, my prayer often

and easily, even gratefully, turns into something else. Into distraction, meditation; into licking my wounds

after yesterday’s battles; into reflection on the day’s upcoming events; into drawing up a list of the things I

have to get done. There is something in us that wants to domesticate prayer, to siphon out the awe and tense

uncertainty and replace it with comfy things of our own ken and preference. I rarely pour out my heart in

candor and wonder, or in doubt and fury, or in whatever else may honestly bubble up from unseen depths. I

prefer to be almost anywhere but that tender wound of passion and vulnerability. Whether consciously or not,

I look for whatever returns me to rest. I once thought that being a martyr would be the hardest thing that

could be required of a disciple, but now I suspect, at least for me, it is to remain in this fragile spot where I am

not totally in control or utterly out of control, where I am contingent, in between, where I know myself as

creature, sinner, disciple. Saint Teresa of Avila once remarked, “without first entering our own souls without

getting to know ourselves.” If you want to know why we do not reach the intimacy of walking with the Lord in

the cool of the evening, it is our unwillingness to see ourselves as we are. And I personally believe there is

nothing so painful as prayer… prayer requires that we fight to our last breath. It requires us to be naked, to

strip off, before we are in the presence of the Lord. In the Old Testament, if a priest was to enter the sanctuary,

he was required to strip off all his clothes, to bathe, and then, only then, the naked priest was allowed to enter

the holy place.

In the Love of Christ.

Fr. Rodolfo G. Ramirez.

PHASE TWO REOPENING

BY REOPENING LEADERSHIP TEAM

Dear People of Saint Anne,

The Phase 2 Reopening for Saint Anne began last Saturday, July 18. Health and safety for participating in masses were of

paramount concern. Here are the changes:

Weekend Masses schedule: Saturday, July 25 at 5:15 p.m. and Sunday, July 26 at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

For this weekend, we are allowed reservations for 125 people for each mass.

We will continue to offer our weekend masses and daily reflections online. Older Parishioners in the high-risk

category, anyone who is not feeling well, and anyone who has been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should

refrain from attending Mass.

Weekly, Monday through Friday, Masses have resumed at 8:15 a.m. in the Church.

If you plan to attend any Mass in the church, reservations are required:

Use Sign-Up Genius for all Mass Reservations on the parish website. Our online reservation system is now open.

Select the Mass you want to attend, and tell us the total number of people who will be attending (please add

additional names in the comment box). The reservation system will remain open until noon on Fridays for the

Masses that weekend.

For safety of attendees, volunteers and clergy, entry into the church will be prohibited once Mass begins, and we

plan to begin each Mass as scheduled.

Plan to arrive at least 20 minutes ahead of time to allow for check-in.

Face masks are required any time you are on church property (face mask must cover your nose, mouth and chin).

When entering the building, your temperature will be checked.

Maintain 6 ft social distancing at all time.

Your reservation will be confirmed at the Kiosk in the gathering space.

You and your family will be directed to your pew, ensuring social distancing seating.

There will be a revised procedure for the receiving of communion. Please follow the usher instructions for hand

sanitizing, approaching the priest/deacon/minister. A demonstration will be provided. One can only receive the

Body of Christ in your hands.

When Mass ends - you will be dismissed, row-by-row, beginning with those in the rear of the church. Go directly

to your car. Please do not congregate in the gathering space or outside the church. Volunteers will guide you to

exit.

Other general information:

1. Restrooms will be limited to one person at a time. The state requires sanitizing after each individual use.

2. Hymnals, bulletins and other paper items have been removed until further notice. The bulletin is available on

the website.

3. A cantor and musician will be present at the Masses, but we ask that members of the congregation not join in

the singing at this time.

4. Offerings can be made in the offering boxes in the gathering space.

If you have any questions with the sign-up reservation system, or feel you need assistance, or would prefer to have

someone take your reservation, please call the Parish office at 847.382.5300 and we will gladly assist you.

Lastly, we wish to thank you for your prayers, your patience, and your support, as we have traveled together through this

pandemic. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

In the Peace of Christ,

Rev. Bernard Pietrzak, Pastor; Eryka Accordino, Reopening Co-Chair Jim Probebstle, Reopening Co-Chair

WE CONTINUE TO SEEK REOPENING VOLUNTEERS

Saint Anne Catholic Community

Dear Parishioners,

The scale of support needed to implement the requirements for reopening, necessitate teams of volunteers

available to execute three elements of reopening management and maintenance:

Set-up team: Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/

gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to

attendees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, restrooms are stocked and managed, etc. They will

ensure hand sanitizers are available, and that pews are marked off according to social distancing

guidelines.

Greeting team: Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church,

participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church. Team members will combine some of the

functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will

include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand

sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill. Given the

circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm, paying careful attention to all people on-site.

To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be

provided.

Disinfecting team: These volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of

the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary,

in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies. Per the certification process, parishes will need

to develop appropriate schedules and verification methods to ensure cleaning occurs at the proper

times, relative to when congregants arrive and leave the church building. To support the cleaning

team, guidance on proper cleaning procedures will be provided in the webinar training, as well as in

the Supply Starter Kit.

REQUIREMENTS:

Health and Age: Any captain or volunteer must not be part of a “vulnerable population” (not over the age

of 65; no underlying medical condition such as diabetes, lung disease, undergoing cancer treatment, etc.).

For greeter teams, those from 18 years or older to 65, are welcome.

Scope of work: High School students who wish to volunteer may do so, for set-up teams or cleaning

teams, provided they have permission from their parent or guardian.

If you have additional questions please contact, Eryka Accordino

at [email protected] or 847.620.3055.

Human Concerns

The year 2020 started with some chatter about a

virus an ocean away, but by the middle of March,

that chatter became nothing less than a

high-pitched holler.

Continents were closing to wait out the worst of

the COVID-19 pandemic and states throughout

America were shuttering everything from

businesses and restaurants, to schools and

churches, in hopes the deadly virus would end.

A little closer to home, in Palatine, Illinois, the

impact of the state's closures were particularly felt

by Little Sisters of the Poor's Saint Joseph's

Home, as they quietly struggled to find the

resources to feed their 90 elderly residents and 20

resident nuns.

Food supplies were limited at the home. Weeks

before, Peapod, an online grocer who supported

the home with more than 1,000 cases of food per

month, went out of business. Because churches

were closed, food donations from those places

also had stopped. And Chicago's wholesale

markets, where the nuns would receive produce,

meat and other food products, were limited;

Restaurants weren't operating, so food

availability was tight.

"For more than 140 years, wholesale suppliers

gave food to our nuns," explained the

organization's Director of Development, Diana

Olson. "But with so many restaurants not operating,

there just wasn't enough food at the wholesale markets

to go around."

That's when Saint Anne Hope Ministries began

supporting the home with weekly dinners from

local restaurants.

Since April, Hope Ministries has provided more

than three months of Wednesday night dinners to

residents and nuns.

"Wednesday has become a special day that we all look

forward to," said Mother Superior, Sister Margaret

Charles. "Saint Anne Hope Ministries has

brightened the lives of our residents."

For more than 140 years, Little Sisters of the Poor

received food from Chicago's wholesale markets,

which provided enough food for its residents and

nuns.

The Saint Anne Catholic Community welcomes those who may have an interest in

developing a relationship with Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church. The Rite of

Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which we bring adults into

the Church through Baptism, 1st Eucharist, and Confirmation. We invite you to consider joining other

adults on their journey of spiritual formation in this engaging, dynamic, respectful and spiritual process.

Please join us as our parish re-opens for the community!

DID THEY LEAVE HAPPIER?

BY SISTER LAURETTA LEIPZIG

“Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” This is a beautiful quote of Mother

Teresa. Let’s unpack it and see how we can carry out her advice. We know that happiness in this world is a relative

term, one that changes for the same person every minute, when something else changes in his or her life. When

viewed objectively, we see that happiness actually can and does change from situation to situation. But that’s not

the happiness Mother Teresa is talking about!

The happiness she is referring to lives in our heart, not in our situation, possessions, or any other such area. She is

telling us that real happiness is when you help others and make them happy. Mother Teresa elaborates further on

her quotation by inviting us to be the “…living expression of God’s kindness—kindness, shown in our face, kindness in our

eyes, kindness is our smile and kindness in our warm greeting.” She is quoted as saying, “Happiness is the small, nameless

moments you spend smiling with someone who needs it.” St. Francis of Assisi, in his peace prayer, reminds us “…that it

is in giving that we receive.” To him, real happiness is reciprocal. The more we give, the more we receive. Winston

Churchill reinforces the idea of giving happiness when he says, “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by

what we give.” We might add that it is not how much we give, but how much love we put into the giving. Bishop

Barron tells us that happiness emanates from love and it results in desiring the other’s good, not for our own sake,

but solely for the other. He reminds us that we are created to mold one another’s dreams, hold each other’s fragile

hopes in our hands and touch each other’s heart.

Do we actually have the ability to make someone’s life happier? Do we have the power to give to others what we

want ourselves? Can we make someone happier today? Yes, we have the ability to make another person happier,

feel better. If we check out how supportive we are, how enjoyable we are to be with, how much we show that we

care while that person is in our presence, we will know if we are giving happiness to others.

At a large gathering the leader gave a balloon to each person present, telling them to write their name on it and then drop

it in a large container. He took the basket into another room and invited the people to go into that room and find the

balloon with their name on it. Since they had only 5 minutes, they naturally rushed in, pushing and shoving each other,

but they couldn’t find their balloon in their haste. Then they were instructed to pick out any balloon and give it to the

person whose name was on it, and each person received his or her balloon quickly. This is how it is with happiness, says

the storyteller. All our lives are spent searching for happiness, yet our happiness depends on giving to others.

To get a handle on giving happiness, consider who are the people we, ourselves, would want to encounter, who

would make us leave happier. Certainly, it’s not the energy zapper, the angry, the selfish, the person who doesn’t

care or take the time to listen. Rather, it’s the calm, positive person, the listener, the kind and generous person and

the empathetic. They are the people who make us feel better after encountering them, who lift our spirits and

remind us of God’s love and presence. So, these are the people we want to emulate.

Take the example of Jesus. He walked with his people in their sorrow, listened to their stories, loved them, showed

them kindness and brought them to a new place in dealing with their world. That’s what Mother Teresa is telling

us. Her advice is an invitation to see life with a different perspective, an invitation to open our hearts and realize

that we can be agents of God’s grace wherever we are by acting with generosity and goodness, by being sensitive to

the cry of the needy, caring about everyone who comes to us, providing an understanding that the world is bigger

than “me” and my own needs.

Let us take to heart Mother Teresa’s admonition and be the living experience of God’s love in this world. Make

everyone happier because they met you!

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments

ranks among the most important gifts that we have.

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with

those who, in some way, are part of our community.

Therefore, please note the following:

Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local

hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a

minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at

773..456..6664.

Funerals: To inquire and schedule funeral arrangements, please

call Mary Ellen Johnston at 773..456..6664.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family

prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our

faith community.

Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing

their 1st child

Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church

and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be

asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at

Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before

scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the

meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the Parish Office at

847.382.5300.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process

should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date.

Please call the Parish Office to secure a date as soon as possible.

Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look

forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the

vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are

typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be

registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation

program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and

Education office at 847.620.3067.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school.

Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the

two-year preparation program. For more information, call the

PATHS office at 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by

appointment.

Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to

belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs,

perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means

to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and

honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you.

Call the Parish Office at 847.382.5300 for information regarding

the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).

Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend

an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Family

Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of

the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no

sessions. For further information, call the Parish Office at

847.382.5300.
