Our bylaws call for a minimum of two vestry members from both Calvary and Transfiguration. The vestry meets the third Wednesday of each month in the evening, except for July and August, when we’re on hiatus for the Summer. All who are interested should contact one of the members of the nominating committee – Isabelle Brown, Linda Jones, or Lee Layman – or any current member of the Vestry. The Vestry made its pledge to the Stewardship Campaign at the October meeting. Letters were sent out with pledge cards and return envelopes to members of the congregations. We hope that all can pledge and help the Vestry prepare a balanced budget for approval at our annual meeting and continue our ministry to the community. Any questions regarding the Stewardship Campaign or the church budget should be directed to a member of the vestry. Our church administrative assistant, Penny Yingling, has accepted the role of Vestry secretary and started her new role at our October meeting.

November, 2014It is the mission of Calvary Chapel and the Church of the Transfiguration to witness to Jesus Christ in worship, study, fellowship and care for our community and world.

A Message from Reverend Steve Harris.

Many thanks for the recent welcome!  For a number of us, this is a time of reacquaintance, both from an interim experience in the early 90’s  and the cooperative we had in neighboring congregations.            Beginning our work together, I find myself very much focused on the November calendar of our lives which is full of a number of events – not just church related.            We begin with the time change (fall back) and Election Day with Transfiguration’s Parish Hall being used for voters. Our worship all seems to have items of special note:

*November 2 – All Saints’ Sunday remembering our departed loved ones;

*November 9 – A Sunday to remember those who are serving and have served as Veteran Day approaches;

*November 16 – the offering of pledges for the coming year with allows the congregations to do their planning;

*November 23 – the final Sunday of our “Church Year”;

*November 27 – Thanksgiving Day and a service at Calvary;

*November 30 – the beginning of Advent marked by the four Sundays before Christmas.

In all, including the gifts of time, talent and

treasure, may our lives be a response to the lives given to us by God.

Faithfully, Steve

From our Senior Warden. A reminder that we will elect vestry members and convention delegates at our January Annual Meeting. This is an opportunity for members of Calvary and Transfiguration to serve in the leadership of our congregations and participate in our discipleship.

We’re looking or 3 delegates and 3 alternates for conventions to be held in March and October. The Vestry positions are for three 3-year openings and two 2-year openings.

Your Senior Warden,Keith Carr

Transfiguration Sunday.

It is not uncommon for Episcopal churches to set aside a day to recognize the name by which individual churches are known. The Church of the Transfiguration has a feast day that occurs on August 6. The last time that our feast day fell on a Sunday was 2006 and will not fall on a Sunday again until 2017. Being in the middle of the summer and only occasionally occurring on a Sunday, the Feast of the Transfiguration has gotten lost in the shuffle.

We do have a viable alternative. Every year on the last Sunday in the season of Epiphany the gospel reading retells the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. This Sunday is easy to remember since it is the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday and the last day until Easter that “Alleluias” are used as part of our worship services. What a great day to celebrate and re-experience the event for which Church of the Transfiguration was named!

So mark your calendars for Sunday February 15, 2015 – Transfiguration Sunday. - John Edwards

HELP HOTLINE:Foods needed for Thanksgiving are (but not limited to) canned sweet potatoes, sauerkraut, boxed or fresh potatoes, canned gravies, vegees & pineapple. Meats are purchased by the food manager, and/or her helpers, using monies that are in the coffers. The other foods are also purchased by the hotline committee, if there is not a sufficient amount on the shelves. Every day staples (always needed) are soups, cereals, Ramen noodles, mac & cheese, jelly, p-nut butter. AND, remember we not only provide foods, but help with utilities during the harsh Winter months. Checks may be made to the Church of Transfiguration, with “hotline” in the memo line & don’t forget the red “Hotline” cans at the back of the church. Let’s continue to help make our neighbors feel a part of our “mountain family”. They need help occasionally, many through no fault of their own, but just circumstances.“…..give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in Heaven.” St. Mark:10:21

The Music Corner.

RETURN OF MS. Lynda Kuckenbrod

POINTS TO PONDER!

For many years the Episcopal Church, unlike some denominations, has a policy of open communion. That process began as the Church recognized that Episcopal families consisted of individuals that had other church affiliations. During prayer book revision, in particular, the policy was expanded from adult membership to those who were baptized. There even has been discussion about the altar table open to all, without reference to church membership.

Church membership in the Episcopal Church, congregation by congregation, can be confusing. On the one hand, the rules (canons) of the Church indicate that when people move from one church to another, they should receive a letter of transfer and present it to the new church to be entered on the Parish Register. That policy isn’t advertised and people become active in another church, sometimes with the expectation that they have been automatically picked up. At other times, and this is true in this area, some will move into a community and retain their membership at their former church for a variety of reasons. Some also attend a church, while wishing to retain their membership in another congregation.

Where possible, we try to enroll in the book known as the Parish Register (in which other items such as baptisms are entered) the names of those who wish to be formally listed as church members. Where possible, transfers are requested, both from Episcopal Churches and those of other denominations. Where such records are unavailable, the Canons (rules of the church) make provision for members being entered.

Whether one becomes a member or not, our open communion is precisely that – it’s the Lord’s table to which we are invited.

(Next month on “Points to Ponder” – the Early Episcopal Church and its first two bishops – two different understandings of the church).
