Flying high above Texas I am picturing many highlights as I return from the National Conference in Austin. Favorite memories include:

✺ Following after Van Cliburn in the lobby of the hotel only to have him disappear in a side door when I reached for my camera. Mr. Cliburn gave a warm and heartfelt opening address to us, highlighting memories of his great teacher and mother.

✺ Brilliant competition perform-ances by all students, but special con-gratulations to our students from Washington State who represented the Northwest Division at the nation-al competitions. The national winner of the MTNA Senior Voice Perform-ance Competition was Washington’s own Banner Smith, student of Elaine Scherperel-Burgess. Rachel Wong, student of Kent Coleman, received 2nd place in the MTNA Junior String Performance Competition. Lauren Glass, student of Bonnie Blanchard, took 3rd place in the MTNA Junior Woodwind Competition. Brandon Davis, student of Ryan Schultz, was awarded 2nd place in the MTNA Sen-ior Brass Performance Competition. A 3rd place award was given to Grace Choi, student of Kent Coleman in the MTNA Senior String Performance Competition. Kathryn Ladner, stu-dent of Bonnie Blanchard, took 2nd place in the MTNA Senior Wood-

wind Performance Competition. In the MTNA Composition Competi-tions Benjamin Davis, student of Sharon Van Valin, was awarded 3rd place in the Elementary Division. Justin Ehli, student of Ryan Schultz participated in the Young Artist Brass MTNA Performance Competi-tion and Amber Johnson, student of Sandra Glover, participated in the Young Artist Voice MTNA Perform-ance Competition. We will look for-ward to hearing many of these stu-dents at our WSMTA Conference Washington Winners Recital in Ocean Shores June 26th.

✺ From the Top, with renowned host and pianist Christopher O’Riley, was an intriguing look into the lives of ex-ceptional young musicians and the details of live radio broadcasting. As a live audience I think we did a pretty good job of not coughing. The show will be aired in September on public radio stations.

✺ Fabulous Dinners --- Tex-Mex, BBQ — you name it, Austin has it. Many thanks to Carolyn Malnes for arranging a most delicious and fun Northwest Division Dinner. (I’m still full!) The Gala was a roundup of fun. The highlight, of course, was honor-ing the newest MTNA Fellow, Judith Price.

DEADLINE EXTENDED

Would you like to attend the June conference in Ocean Shores, but have financial priorities that prevent you from going? Are you undecided, feeling torn between a family financial need and the cost of attending the convention? Perhaps you aren’t convinced you qualify for a fee waiver, and have decided to stay home rather than look into it. ...or, could you just be procras-tinating, or mean to get around to it but keep forgetting, or are just too busy, and will therefore be absent by default?? If any of the above situations are remotely similar to yours, then you should be filling out the Conference Fee Waiver Form and mailing it to me. You must know that the WSM-TA organization and its membership would like to include, support,

you in Ocean Shores!

WSMTA Dues Waivers I just received my notice for re-newal of my state and MTNA dues. It reminded ME to remind YOU that WSMTA has funds available to help teachers with the state portion of their dues. There are a number of reasons for applying.

y Maybe you moved and are starting a studio all over again.

y Health issues have meant that you couldn’t teach as much this year.

y Maybe you know someone who has considered mem- bership but needs a jump start to get involved.

If these or similar issues describe your situation, apply for a waiver of the state portion of your dues by June 1st 2006. Contact me to request an applica-tion form form.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

(continued from Page 1) ✺ A power outage in downtown Austin on Sunday afternoon caused all sessions to be cancelled. The con-vention center and hotel were evac-uated to the Lobbies. I was biding my time at an outdoor coffee shop when a man from the Exhibit Hall

joined me and said in his southern accent, “The last time I was in a hotel and the power went out was in Spo-kane, Washington about 15 years ago.” He had no idea I was from Spokane.

✺ A new benefit announced by MTNA: Legal Consultation Services. Do you have a legal concern (zoning, bill collection, tax issues, etc.) and need professional advice? Now (as of July 2006) as an MTNA member, you have access to free legal consul-tation.

✺ Brilliant concerts and wonderful sessions (over 100 of them) rounded out the week in Texas that made me very thankful I do what I do. As mu-sic teachers we have a profound ef-fect on the lives of our students and MTNA strives to raise our profes-sional standards, support us and en-sure the future of music.

It is with great anticipation that we look forward to next year’s Col-laborative Conference with Canada in Toronto, March 23-27, 2007. Make your plans now to attend.

Closer to home and just as excit-ing is our own state conference com-ing up June 26-30. Ocean Shores (right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean) is the place. Now is the time to register and make your hotel res-ervations. Many great sessions are planned as well as outstanding re-citals. And . . . a first for WSMTA—Tai Chi on the beach!! Our gratitude goes out to Conference Co-Chairs Gerry Kuaimoku, Phyllis Pieffer and the Grays Harbor Chapter for their many hours of work they are putting into this event to make it suc-cessful.

Ah, the plane is landing smoothly back in Spokane. I’m eager to try out my suitcase of new music, present my students with new books and lead some new activities in group classes. It’s spring; it’s spring—new beginnings, new growth, and maybe even new sunny-warm weather!!

Margee Webster, NCTM WSMTA President

p.s. Be sure to make your own hotel reservations for the conference before May 25th. Rooms will not be reserved and our rates will not be guaranteed with the hotels after that date. Refer to page X for hotel information.

FUTURE EVENTS (continued from Page 1)

WSMTA Conference

(continued from Page 1) We have exceptional in-state col-leagues presenting programs as well. Among them are: Julia Schnebly-Black: “Where, Oh, Where have the Letter Names Gone;” Mary Jane Clarke and Lynn Lewis: Beginning Piano Concerti; Geisa Dutra: The Piano Music of Brazil; Wayne John-son: “Keyboard Wizards of the Ger-shwin Era;” Forrest and Akiko Kin-ney: “16 Skills to Teach with 3 Chords” and “Making Arrange-ments;” Keva Vaughan-McMorrow: “Keeping Students Composed;” Rob-ert Neisinger: Multiple Percussion Performance Techniques (A unique approach to rhythms and meter); and, Deborah Rambo: “Practical In-terpretation.” Of course, we have sessions on Certification, the Independent Music Teacher, Music Link, and the WSM-TA Theory Syllabus, and the Honors Recitals. But, the most important aspect of this conference is the oppor-tunity to share our ideas, thoughts, and enthusiasm about music and about teaching with our colleagues. It is an unforgettable experience! Don’t miss it!

EDUCATION

Scholarship Fund

2006 WSMTA Scholarship Fund

The WSMTA Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 to provide travel scholarships to students. To-day, awards are given to students and teachers for continued music study, as prize money for the Out-standing Artist Competition and for travel expenses for the MTNA win-ners to compete at the Northwest Division Competition and the MTNA National Competition. Funds are raised, in part, by cash donations from individuals, chapters and businesses. If you would like to make a cash contribution in the hon-or or memory of someone special, please complete and enclose the form at the bottom of Page X of this news-letter, along with your check, and

mail to: Cindy Eubanks, 3008 NW 132nd Circle, Vancouver, WA 98685. Another way funds are raised for the WSMTA Scholarship Fund is by the annual Raffle/Silent Auction held at the State Conference in June. In-dividuals, chapters, and businesses donate items and/or services to be raffled or auctioned at the Confer-ence. Ideas for donations may be hand-crafted items, CD’s, books, baskets, art work; also services such as free lessons, workshops, master classes, recitals, a weekend retreat, etc. Or another idea might be, if you are in-corporating technology into your stu-dio, donate what you’ve learned about those software programs (the ones you can never figure out, but all your students know exactly what to do), toward a technology workshop. Or donate an hour or two of your time to help a teacher set up their computer lab (someone might be willing to pay a hefty price for this kind of information!). Your ideas for donations are very welcome. Thank you for supporting the 2006 WSMTA Scholarship Fund.

ENRICHMENT

A IMTF Corner A

How to Stop the Cookies

This month a teacher sent an e-mail asking: “…what to do when stu-dents think you are a target to hit up for fundraising projects?” It is a good question. After all we love our students and want to support them in there endeavors. However, our relationship with our students is a business relationship. They are com-ing to us to study music and to pay us for doing so. We don’t want to see our income drained away through endless soliciting by our students. In 2005-2006 I have purchased boxes of Girl Scout cookies from two students. Two rolls of gift wrap paper at Christmas, and recently a tub of cookie dough. I did turn down one project where the items started at over $20.00 and I remember I felt badly at the time. My total this year before June has been $43.00 dollars. Not too bad I suppose as compared to my coffee habit, but still it is mon-ey out of pocket that was not budget-ed. So what should we do?

Options:

1. Budget $100.00 a year or $10.00 a month for student events.

2. Budget $40.00 a year or $10.00 a quarter for student events.

And just explain to your families that you plan for this and it is first come first serve.

or:

1. Have a comfortable policy that you can say with a smile to your parents and student. Remember W. C. Fields famous expression? “Go away kid you bother me.” humm… that may not work.

MUSIC REVIEWS

E e NEW MUSIC e E Reviews by Gladys Bath

Our Last Best Hope by Patrick Stoyanovich, early adv.,3 pages, published. by Metro City Music, 9507 Northtown Loop, Bain-bridge Island, Wa. 98110

The title is taken from an address by Abraham Lincoln, “...We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best, hope of earth…The way is plain, peaceful, generous...which, if follow-ed, the world will forever applaud, and God must forever bless.” If I had to use one word to describe this composition it would be majes-tic—other choices might be hopeful or inspiring. This work has a bold and beautiful American sound of wide spaces—plains, mountains, valleys. The introductory theme in 2 voices is reminiscent of Appalachian folk tunes. This theme is repeated throughout, each time expanding in breadth and scope. A repeated bass pattern consisting of open 5ths, used intermittently, provides rhythmic energy and interest. The form is symmetrical--the piece builds to a broad climax of full right hand chords and left hand octaves before returning to two voices, and ending with the bass pattern. Harmonically, the key of F major dominates, interrupted by a series of modulations before a return to the main theme. For purposes of peda-gogy, this piece would be an excel-lent study in learning to play chords expressively and at many different dynamic levels, as indicated by the composer. The music sounds very comfortable with the meter of 5/4 which is used throughout. If you are looking for a strong piece as a recital closer, The Last Best Hope would be a great choice. LOCAL CHAPTERS Chapter Spotlight

South King County

The South King County Chapter of WSMTA had an eventful year both

as a chapter and with accomplish-ments of individual members. The chapter has grown with the addition of several new members this year. We are delighted to welcome new musical resources with the addition of voice teachers as well as wood-wind instructors (sadly no crumhorn players as yet). We successfully ex-panded our Young Artists Masters Series (YAMS) to include less experi-enced students in a Junior Artist Masters Series (JAMS). A Plan to include students specializing in the music of P.D.Q. Bach (HAMS) is cur-rently on hold. Student events have increased participation this year. We now have over eighty students enrolled in the state theory tests. Our Chapter Hon-ors Competition increased by nine from the previous year. Student re-citals have also increased in atten-dance. Our chapter Fine Arts Recital was especially noteworthy this year. With the help of Julie Swienty our chapter was able to help fund the event with a grant from the Kent Arts Council. With the added funds we were able to host a wonderful concert at Highline Community College. Our chapter has had some notable individual accomplishments this past year. At the aforementioned Fine Arts recital, our own Jennifer Bow-man was one of the performers. An-other member, John Fahrenwald, has performed at the Seattle Art Mus-eum, the Frye Art Museum and Seattle Town-Hall. Recently he re-leased a CD of his own compositions entitled Naissance. The chapter’s humble yet obedient president, Steve Nehrenberg, has had several works published by F.J.H. and Heritage music publishers. Two of our mem-bers are currently serving as state officers: K.C. Groom is the District II vice president while Mary Kaye Owen is the president elect. We continue to enjoy our musical endeavors and look forward to exploring new opportunities in the future.
