The Class of 2018 Ursuline High School’s 110th Commencement will be held Sunday, May 27 at Stambaugh Auditorium beginning at 1:00 p.m. e speaker will be Ms. Patricia Fleming, Principal Emeritus of Ursuline High School. Mrs. Mary Fiala, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Youngstown, will be a special guest and Mr. Matthew Sammartino, Principal, will award diplomas to the 102 graduates. Academic Excellence Awards will be presented to the top graduates of the Ursuline Class of 2018. Richard Weitzel and Katharine Repetski are the Valedictorians with grade point aver- ages of 4.58 on a 4.0 scale. Sophie Alper and Sarah Skiver will be honored as the Salutatorians with grade point averages of 4.44 on a 4.0 scale. Ricky Weitzel is the son of Dr. Richard and Eve Weitzel. He is a graduate of Saint Rose School and a member of the par- ish. He will attend Columbia University with a major of Biology (Pre-Med). During his high school career, Ricky was a four-year member of the football team and a three-year letter winner. He was Class President and a member of the National Honor Society, Students of Stewardship, Spanish Club, Interact Club and served as a Student Ambassador. Ricky was a National Merit Commended Scholar and represented Ursuline at Youth Leadership Mahoning Valley and at the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference. He also shadowed a physician weekly at Saint Joseph Hospital in Warren. Ricky was the recipient of the Father Michael Chonko-Dr. Janet DelBene Chemistry Award.

Katharine Repetski is the daughter of Denise Walters Dobson and Michael J. Repetski. She attended Saint Rose School and is a member of the Saint Columba Cathedral Parish. Katharine will attend Youngstown State University Honors College and will major in Biology and Criminal Justice. At Ursuline, she was a member of the Marching and Concert Bands lettering all four years. She served as Woodwind Captain her senior year. Katharine was a member of the soccer team, lettering twice. She was a Student Ambassador, member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club and Students of Stewardship. She served as Captain of the Ocean Bowl Team which earned a third place finish – the best in school history. She is a Eucharistic Minister and Altar Server and was a delegate to Youth Leadership Mahoning Valley. Katharine is nationally ranked in karate holding a Third Degree Black Belt and First Degree Black Belt in Chinese Kenpo.

Sophie Alper is the daughter of Marina and Gregory Alper. She attended the Akiva Academy and is a member of Temple El Emeth. She will attend the University of Toledo Honors Program and major in Mechanical Engineering. While at Ursuline, Sophie was a member of the soccer team, marching and concert bands, French Club, Art Club and the National Honor Society. She is a member of BBYO (Jewish Youth Organization) and serves as President. Sophie is Secretary of MSJS (Jewish Sunday School). She also leads services at Temple on Saturdays. She is the recipient of the Holocaust Poetry Award from the Jewish Community Relations Council Board.

Sarah Skiver is the daughter of Karen and Larry Skiver. She is a graduate of Saint Rose School and a member of the parish. She will attend the University of Akron Honors College majoring in Chemical Engineering. During her high school career, Sarah was very active in theater serving as a board member of the International Thespian Society. She also was a state qualifier in Speech and Debate. Sarah was a varsity cheerleader, a member of El Fuego, the Marching and Concert Bands, National Honor Society and a Student Ambassador. She was a two-year Camp Fitch Counselor for Saint Rose School. Sarah was a also a two-time Congressional Art Show Finalist.

The Awards Assembly will be held on Thursday, May 24th beginning at 8:00 a.m. Members of the Class of 2018 will be formally presented to Mr. Sammartino, faculty, and student body at this assembly. Students in grades 9 through 11 will be recognized at the Awards Assembly for their academic achievements and service to the school. All parents are cordially invited to attend. A special reception in honor of the parents of the graduating seniors will be held immediately following the ceremony in the cafeteria.

The Baccalaureate Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Columba Cathedral on Friday, May 25th at 6:30 p.m. Rev. Richard Murphy, President of Ursuline, will be the celebrant joined by pastors of area catholic parishes.

Following the Baccalaureate Liturgy, the graduates will be guests of the faculty and administration at the annual Senior Dinner Dance to be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center from 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

JaJuan Booker Gibbs and Katharine Repetski are the recipients of the Perfect Attendance Awards for the Class of 2018. Neither JaJuan nor Katharine has missed a day of school in their four-year Ursuline career.

Jordyn Kenneally and Carl Ross are the recipients of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award. This award is given to one male and one female athlete who are models of good sportsmanship for their team and school. Jordyn is a member of the softball and soccer teams. Carl is a member of the golf, soccer, and tennis teams.

SeniorAwards

Carmella Donofrio has been named the Ursuline High School Theatre Department’s Thespian of the Year. This award is given to one exemplary senior who has excelled and significantly contributed to the Ursuline theatre program. Carmella is a four-year member of the theatre program.

Elsie Kibler earned the distinction of Best in Show in the Ursuline High School Art Show. Abigael Price earned the distinction of Second Best in Show. Both Elsie and Abigael have taken art for four years at Ursuline and have won a variety of awards for their works.

Carmella Donofrio and Amanda Leone were honored as the Ursuline High School Eagle of the Cross award winners. This is the highest award the Diocese of Youngstown bestows on young people. Carmella and Amanda’s dedication to their churches and community earned them this award. Carmella is a member of Saint Christine Parish and Amanda is a member of Saint Edward Parish.

- freshman Dominic Adams (left) for his first place finish in the annual Dom Leone Writing Competition. Dominic’s winning entry was in the fiction category. This project, which is in its twenty-fifth year, has the support of the Youngstown Diocesan Schools and the Youngstown State University English Depart-ment. The contest is named after Dom Leone, a writer and a graduate of YSU who attended schools in Youngstown. Dom died of cancer in 1989.

USNA Summer Seminar is offered to perspective candidates who are interested in applying to the Naval Academy. Over 15,000 young men and women apply every year for an opportunity to attend a one week session during the month of June. 850 students are chosen for each ses-sion. Owen will learn about life at the Naval Academy, as well as how academ-ics, athletics and professional training play an important role in developing our nation’s leaders. The seminar will take place in Annapolis, Maryland.

If you would prefer to pay by cash or check, please contact the Ursuline High School Office at 330-744-4563. Parents who opt for the cash or check option, must accompany their camper to the first day of camp to sign release forms. Online registrants will complete the release form at the time of purchase. All campers will receive a t-shirt on the final day of each camp. Grade levels reflect a student’s grade in the fall.

News& Notes

Ursuline High School will honor students in grades 9-12 at the annual Awards Day ceremony on Thursday, May 24 at 8 a.m. The ceremony will take place in the gymnasium. Students in grades 9-11 are to wear their uniform and graduates will wear their gowns. A light breakfast reception will take place after the ceremony for the graduates and their families.

It is not too late to register for Summer School. Freshmen and sophomores may take Physical Education and juniors and seniors have the opportunity to take American Goverment. If you need additional registration paperwork, please have your child stop by the office or call 330-744-4563 for more information. Summer School will take place from June 7 - June 27, 2018 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Students taking summer courses should park or be dropped off on Bryson Street. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. daily.

Ursuline High School will begin summer hours on Monday, June 4. During the summer school ses-sion, the office will be open from 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Office hours during July and early August are 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. The office is closed each day for lunch from 12 - 1 p.m.

Summer assignments have been posted on www.ursuline.com and will be mailed home to members of the Class of 2022. If a student has questions while completing the assignment, please e-mail the teacher. Procedures and dead-lines are included on the website for your reference.

Pen-Pal Assembly

Over the course of this school year, Mrs. Morrison’s and Miss Rogers’ sophomore English classes have been corresponding with third graders from St. Christine, St. Rose, and Akiva Academy. Based on the information in the letters they received from their third grade pen pal, the sophomores wrote and designed a book for their pen pal. On April 20, the third graders visited Ursuline to meet their pen pals, participate in reading games, watch a mime, and receive their book. More Pen Pal Day pictures can be found on the UHS website.
