Name the Newsletter Contest

WINNER! Remember — a couple of months ago, when we announced a contest to find a new name our monthly newsletter? We had nearly a dozen ideas submitted and our lucky winner is JANET ON, who suggested we call the news-letter The Clover Leaf! Janet wins 2 tickets to our February event:

My Funny Valentine! Thank you, everyone who submitted an idea! We love hearing from our Members, so keep the good ideas coming for future events, trips, classes, etc.!

“My Funny Valentine,” a Cabaret featuring the comedic duo of Sandy and Richard Riccardi, is coming to the Cloverdale Senior Center on Saturday, February 7th. The Riccardis have their own two-person, all-original, all-comedy cabaret, which they have performed all over the

country. With over 4 million YouTube hits, they have proven nothing is sacred. In true Cabaret fashion, the Senior Center will provide the tables, tablecloths and candlelight for that special Valentine ambience. Guests will bring their own favorite drinks, snacks and drink cups. Coffee, tea and water will be provided. Then settle in with friends for an evening that promises to be full of fun and laughter. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are only $15 per person, and early reservations are advised since this event is sure to be a sell-out. Call the Center at 707-894-4826 to reserve your ticket or reserve an entire table to share with friends!

Class continues

Have you heard of nonviolent communication? Quite a few people have studied this method of speaking and listening fully and compassionately to relate mindfully with the people in your world. Are you curious? Some of the students in the current group are interested in continuing the study, which centers around a text called “Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life,” by Marshall B. Rosenberg. Rosenberg is the founder and director of educational services for the Center for Nonviolent Communications, an international peacemaking organization. If you are interested in working at any level,

beginning or continuing, please attend an

organizational session on January 28th at 1 p.m.

We will meet regularly on Wednesdays from 1:00 to

2:30p.m. For a preview of the material, the text is

available to borrow at the library and to buy at various

places. $3.00 donation per class is requested.

New Discussion Group:

Ted Talks … and so do we

Tuesdays ~ January 13 – February 17

1:30-2:45pm

TED is an organization devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (under 18 minutes). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Join us for a new discussion group using TED Talks as a jumping-off point for expressing our own thoughts and ideas on a number of topics. We will have facilitated meetings for 6 weeks, beginning Tuesday, January 13th from 1:30-2:45pm. We will view one or more TED Talks around a selected theme, then discuss what we heard and express our own ideas on the messages presented by the TED Talks’ speakers. Our first week’s meeting will focus on the topic of Social Media, and we will view and discuss 2-3 talks on this theme. Since each group meeting will explore a new topic,

attendance can be on a drop-in basis. We look forward

to having you join us whenever you can over the 6-week

meeting schedule. $3.00 donation per session.

Announcements

We are pleased to partner with Carmen Myers and her program HUG, “For The Making Of New Americans” in bringing two new activities to involve the Spanish- speaking members of our community. By offering multiple opportunities at our Senior Center, more community members will become Members of our Center while enjoying a fun and familiar activity.

Learning American English online will be held in our Computer Lab on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00am to noon starting Tuesday, January 20th. Carmen Myers has been successfully teaching local families how to learn English through this program, us-ing their own home computers, for the last four years. By utilizing this opportunity, parents will be able to help their children with homework, learn how to work with the school system, and find better employment oppor-tunities. Those interested in taking these classes will become Members of the Senior Center. We will also have the game of Mexican Bingo called “Loteria,” which will be played on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 1pm. This activity was started at the Windsor Senior Center by Delia Nieto. Windsor’s Spanish-speaking seniors have responded happily to the opportunity to participate in a Spanish- speaking activity. “Loteria” will begin on Wednesday, January 21st at 1:00 pm. Carmen Myers will coordinate both activities, including outreach and recruiting volunteers, etc. For information on how to register for the activities or other related questions, please contact Carmen Myers (707) 894-2174 [email protected]

your niche.

Colleen’s Corner Notes & Thanks

What a whirlwind of a Holiday Season at the Center! We were surrounded by such a flurry of Holiday goodness and warm wishes from our Members! Thank you so very much!

In this New Year, I hope you make the time to take care of yourselves. Of course, move more, eat less, take your vitamins, get enough rest, etc. But it is also important to take a moment to reflect on what is special to you. Maybe an extra stroll outside, some reading or meditation, listening to your favorite song or calling an old friend. Make some time to do

whatever makes YOU happy. Much Love, Colleen

Our Center relies on the many hours of work put in by our wonderful volunteers. Like anything else, many hands make light work. We need additional help in the following areas:

Front Desk Receptionist: One day a week either morning 9:30am - noon or in the afternoon from Noon - 2:30 pm. Training is provided. If you like to work with people, answer the phones and help others, please call Leah for information.

Creative Notions Store: This little store is our crafter’s treasure! Everything sold at the store has been donated, and we have volunteers selling and displaying the items. The store is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am - 4pm. We are currently looking for volunteers for the afternoon shift 1pm-4pm. Call Rebekah for more information.

Special Events: When we have our FUNdraisers, we need some extra help. We are looking to fill an on-call list of Greeters, Servers, Kitchen Helper, Decorators, etc. If you’d like to learn more about this, please call Colleen.

Thank you for all of your time and support!

Spotlight on

Debbie Shanahan, Treasurer Born and raised on the sunny shores of Hawaii, Debbie attended a boarding school, Hawaii Preparatory Academy. She decided to skip a test in French class to attend a college presentation. She was surprised to be offered attendance with a full tennis scholarship to this college, Central College in Pella, Iowa. Having never been past California on the ‘mainland,’ she was surprised to find that corn was the main crop instead of potatoes.

Although a full tennis scholarship got her to Iowa, it was true love that captured her in Pella. She met her future husband (a senior no less), on her first day on campus. After they courted during that year at college, Debbie’s mother passed away. She decided to follow Mike back to his home state of New Jersey after his graduation. Debbie attended the University of Connecticut and they lived in New Jersey for nearly 10 years. During this time, the two were married and then moved to the West Coast, first living in Rohnert Park. Debbie’s career as an Administrative Assistant/Executive Secretary started in the Banking industry and has moved her into the non-profit world. As she says, “seems like I have always worked around reconciling someone else’s money and designing a layout for something.”

Nearly 18 years ago, Mike and Debbie purchased a home in Cloverdale, which has an adorable handmade front screen door custom built for their then cocker spaniel. Mike and Debbie were given the opportunity to become business owners, and purchased Photo Graphix from the Brigham family. Photo Graphix was originally located at 219 N Cloverdale Blvd (now Bolt). They pondered a new name for their business and realized that daily someone commented on how low their door knob was located. Hence “Low Knob Press” was born! They moved the business in February 2014 to the current location at 109 East First Street.

Long-time friends with Dominick Di Noto and Bert Spence, Debbie was asked (repeatedly) by Dominick if she wanted to help out at the Senior Center paying bills and making deposits. In August of 2013, Debbie became the Senior Center Treasurer and has since worked very hard to keep everything in budget.

Outside of her Center responsibilities and her many other volunteer jobs, she likes to read, do Origami and work Jigsaw

puzzles. Her sense of style and fun can be seen in her peacock highlighted hair and her fun nail designs, which recently featured C, M, Y, K (print colors) for the annual Printer’s Convention in Las Vegas. We are so fortunate to have Debbie’s knowledge and experience in keeping the Treasury for the Senior Center. Thank you for all of your hard work!
