Brain Boosting Foods
Connie Lehman, RD, CDE at the Topeka Pharmacy Wellness Program
If you ever thought that what you were eating affected your
mood or your ability to think clearly, you won’t be surprised to
find out research agrees with you! Research is showing that a
brain-healthy diet may lower the incidence of depression and
anxiety and slow cognitive decline. Healthy patterns of eating
include avoiding white carbohydrates & highly processed
foods, while adding a better balance of whole foods.
Not surprisingly, the same patterns of eating which are good
for the heart are also good for the brain. The Mediterranean
Diet, summarized below, incorporates many foods also found
to be brain-healthy:
VEGETABLES & WHOLE FRUITS: The Mediterranean diet em-
phasizes intake of 6 or more servings of fruits and vegetables
daily. Vegetables and whole fruits are powerhouses of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Leafy greens including
kale, spinach, romaine, cabbage and broccoli, have been especially emphasized in research showing improved
brain health.
WHOLE GRAINS: Breads and cereals made from whole grains are heart and brain-healthy. 3 servings of
whole grains is the minimum recommended daily amount. Gluten-free foods are not necessary unless there
is an allergy present.
HEALTHY FATS: Olive Oil is used instead of butter or margarine for the Mediterranean diet. Nuts are pro-
moted for brain health as well as heart health, with 1/4 cup daily being a healthy snack.
BEANS: Dried cooked beans such as kidney, lima, red, black, northern or navy beans, are a great source of
protein and fiber. Serve bean recipes at least twice weekly. One trending idea is to make meatless Monday
your household tradition.
FISH & SEAFOOD: Omega-3 fatty acids & vitamin D, good for heart & brain health, are found in the highest
amounts in seafood. Salmon, sardines & oysters are tops, but most commonly eaten fish are safe & good for
you. Eat fish at least twice weekly, but avoid any which is battered and deep-fried.
POULTRY, EGGS, CHEESE & YOGURT: These foods are recommended in moderate portions once daily or
less.
LESS RED MEAT: The average American consumes 21 ounces of red meat every week, which makes weight
control and good health difficult to maintain due to excess calories and saturated fat. For heart and brain
health, limit beef to one 4 ounce serving weekly.
LIMIT SWEETS: The average American eats 22 tsp of added sugar every day, which is now linked to diabe-
tes, heart disease and possibly depression and decreased cognitive abilities. Love your brain and limit sweets
in portions & frequency.
