The Cockelshell raid
Celebrating a heroic raid 70 Years on
BAFTA winning historian and author Dan Snow takes us on a journey full of great trials, tribulations and tears, as he breaths new life into the World War II Cockleshell Raid, and brings back to life the Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment in December1942. Come and join us on this present day adventure celebrating those brave men who risked their lives to fulfill their secret mission. As we mark the 70th anniversary of the legendary Operation Frankton, we introduce you to Royal Marine Zach West and his companions as they go through their paces during training, preparing to trek over 70 miles on the River Gironde in France where this thrilling raid first took place those many years ago. The Frankton Four reignite the torch borne by The Cockleshell Heroes, and carry it with them as they light the way for us to remember those brave men. For this struggle they need the
Same amount of strength and stamina; and for their journey they have been given a replica Cockle Mark II sea kayak. They need to show that they’re up for the challenge through delivering great team spirit, not to mention incredible teamwork. You are taken on their own personal journey as they come to terms with their brutal training schedule. Dan Snow will guide you throughout their progress on this epic journey with a highly engaging and comprehensive account of Operation Frankton. This isn’t a mission for the faint hearted; there are not many men out there who would be strong enough for this challenge. In Winter 2012 BBC one will bring to you a documentary by Tippingpoint Productions, a company which promises to deliver quality content over a multiple platforms to its viewers.

A History
2000 hours on December 7th 1942, Captain H.G.Hasler RM, known as "Blondie" led
a raid involving the submarine HMS Tuna and 10 men from the Royal Marines and
5 canoes (Cockles). The targets were merchant ships lying in Bordeaux harbour -
ships that were successfully breaking the Allied blockade particularly between
Japan and Germany. Conventional methods such as bombing had been discounted.
Operation Frankton was an unorthodox, imaginative and daring solution. At the
end of the first night only 2 canoes and 4 men were still operational. Four nights
later they inflicted damage to 5 ships lying in the harbour. Only two men survived
and returned to the UK.
"Of the many brave and dashing raids carried out by the men of Combined
Operations Command none was more courageous or imaginative than Operation
Frankton." Admiral The Earl Mountbatten of Burma.

SFX: Gentle water splashes V/O Combined Operations during the Second World War: secret units sprang up behind enemy lines in all battle zones. Unique stealth squadrons used subterfuge and cunning to disrupt the enemy. This was the genesis of Commando Warfare. But just what did those pioneering units go through and what sacrifices did they make? To get into the psyche of the volunteer hazardous servicemen, one mission epitomises valour and dexterity in equal measure.

DAN SNOW The evolution of the Special Op continues today and these elite operatives share countless parallels with The Cockleshell Heroes of 1942. Through the eyes of active servicemen of the Royal Marines, their aim is to live and breathe the world changing actions of their veteran colleagues. Our film crew has documented, from the inside, their very own mission and chart their attempt to trace the obstacles and challenges that were overcome by the Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment in the famous mission of December 7th 1942, where the intrepid mission of stealth and bravery took place in canoes nicknamed ʻCocklesʼ.

HCKA MEMBER INTERVIEW The Cockle Mark II consists of a ridged plywood deck and a ridged plywood flat bottom joined by rubberised canvas sides. This allows it to be collapsed flat for storage and to fit through a submarine hatch. The plywood bottom to the hull allows it to be dragged fully loaded on land, essential for wartime landings.

DAN SNOW SYNC/COMM Training for Blondieʼs set of Canoe Commandoes began in earnest here, by the shore of the English Channel at Eastney, Hampshire. They were an elite task force: youthful and full of zest twinned with the Royal Marineʼs military bite. Major Blondie insisted they be “Indifferent to their personal safety”

The Commando ethos is enshrined in the Royal Marines and the Army Commandos of today. Every person has to pass the grueling Commando course to earn the coveted green beret and has instilled in them the qualities of the Commando Ethos of courage, unity, determination, adaptability, unselfishness, humility and fortitude.

27 EXT. PTC in Bordeaux Harbour
Dan Snow (Gestures to the port behind him) Bordeaux. This was home to German and Italian U-Boats as well as the German blockade-runners. This was a hub of activity, a military fortress set at the end of the most heavily defended Estuary in Europe defended by some 10,000 troops. Without doubt it was an opportune target for the Allies but how would they infiltrate such an impenetrable garrison?
28 MIX TO ARCHIVE Archive superimposed above where Dan stands in the port of Bordeaux. RAF Bomber Fly overhead A Ship rolls into the port holding military personnel.
Dan Snow This became 'The Bordeaux Problem' this was due to the rejection by the RAF of a bombing campaign in the port, owed to a lack of accuracy coupled with potential civilian casualties. A military offensive of 50,000 men was similarly discounted due to a lack of manpower and resources. 'The Bordeaux Problem' needed a solution.

Dan Snow 21st September 1942 the resolution would land on Hasler's desk. 'The Bordeaux Problem' was rechristened Operation Frankton. The solution was to descale the offensive and use subtlety and espionage by canoeing under the noses of the Nazi Defence force. Hasler and his men were the governmentʼs new invasion squad.

Dan Snow Operation Frankton was set in motion. The men of combined operations would have been in training for months, wholly unaware of the mission, and where it would take them. Today the guys take on the Medway. A small-scale younger brother to the River Gironde.
34 EXT. Chatham Historic Dockyard PTC. Next to HMS Ocelot and climbs aboard
Dan Snow Chatham's Historic Dockyard in Kent is home to HMS Ocelot, which was the last warship built for the Royal Navy at Chatham Dockyard. An 'O' Class diesel electric submarine, she was launched in 1962. This is one of the closest surviving submarines to that of HMS Tuna. The starting point of Operation Frankton. Let's take a look inside.

DAN SNOW The men would have endured these conditions under the impression they were on exercise, but Major Hasler had other ideas. Blondie told his men that they were now on Operations. They had presumed the target lay in wait, East, in Norway. In the form of the German battleship the Tirpitz, but it was the Nazi blockade-runners in the supply centre of Bordeaux that awaited them.

39 EXT. PTC. WALKY TALKY Holy Loch Ends walk by the shore of Holy Loch.
Dan Snow Until now the men were playing the waiting game aboard HMS Tuna, stock still at Holy Loch on the River Clyde, Scotland. By 30th November however, she eased out of the loch and onto the River Clyde. To try and emulate the suspense aboard the 'Raider Sub' our boys spend a night aboard the Ocelot and have a visitor. Historian Saul David kits them out in regulation uniform, the night before the 'big push'.

Saul David Gentlemen, I have your uniform, which the Cockle Shell Heroes would have worn 70 years ago, this uniform was designed and tested by Hasler. This is the camouflage waterproof 'Cockle Suit'. It holds the badges of Combined Operations and Royal Marines on the arm. The jacket has an elastic skirting that fits over the top of the cockpit cover to guarantee a watertight seal. Battle dress trousers and thigh length waders will complete the look. Saul David V/O Silenced Sten Machine Gun and the Limpet mine, topped with a personal automatic .45 caliber pistol would have made up your arsenal.
41 Marines try on the uniforms
Marine Johnston Snug fit. Compared to our kit, I could imagine this would become very heavy under wet conditions. But saying that, minimal kit means less weight on the kayak so this should make our life allot easier.
42 Marine West Our modern day operations uniform would be lighter weight, but essentially times havenʼt change too much.

Dan Snow V/O The men bed down for the night, ready for the assault on the Gironde at first light. 1942 the waiting would have continued until the Tuna emerged at the Bay of Biscay just before dusk.

Behind me is the Bay of Biscay, some of the roughest seas in Europe. 70 years ago today, the Cockleshell Heroes would have been preparing to launch from the outer casing of their vessel. Like them, Commandoes West, Johnston, Ray and Galtress take the first tenuous strokes of the paddle towards the mouth of the Gironde.
